Getting in the Christmas spirit

December 18th, 2009 by Shauna

There's one week left to Christmas! Seven days to finish up your shopping, write those holiday cards and prepare for the big family meals. And don't forget about all those parties filling up your calendar.

The Triad, though it's getting to be more like a duo, got to celebrate last weekend in a cozy and intimate event — at our blog party at Hawaiian Brians. There was lots of room to mingle, play pool or ping pong or go dancing to the live music. Here's some photos from that night...

So how many more holiday parties or preparations do you need to do before Christmas? Got the gift for your significant other?

Does your family or circle of friends celebrate in the new year just because it's too hectic in December? It's amazing how fast the time goes between Thanksgiving and Christmas...

O&E image of the day: Lunch with Kaleo O Kalihi blogger Alan Okami

We went to Sugoi's in City Square to say hello to owner Zachary Lee, center. Alan was such a gentleman, treating me to lunch and even giving me a bag of goodies — guava macadamia Kauai Kookies and two CDs. We're talking about planning a party in the new year at his shop! All the fun details are under wraps for now but it'll be a party you don't want to miss!

Good Morning Shauna and the Hive!

Got just one more party before our family Christmas night dinner. Tomorrow night (Sat 12/19) will be another party at HB Lounge in Hawaiian Brians with Supes and a bunch of elves. Wasabi will be playing... they're crazy fun!

Promos will say it's potluck and goodie bag but that doesn't mean you can't come if no mo'. And remember FREEEE karaoke afterwards.

  12. Scott:

Shauna, I've got EMM386 and Acura beat....today is the last day I'll spend in my 20's :(

sally: Oh yeah, hope tomorrow's party turns out well!!

Scott: Oh, I'm sorry! See what happens when you are not in the SecretPlace or FB!! Happy early birthday to you, also! Any pre-celebration plans? For a man, I think everything goes uphill once you hit 30! A nice, established age! No longer a "kid." And you, my man, have a lot to BEE proud of as you mark the milestone year!

  15. anklebiters:

...and so is the Fiesta Bowl...interesting read as to how much politicking goes on behind the bowl games...teejay will like this story...

You haven't experienced life until you reach the black balloons :!:

  17. KAN:

    Guuud morning Hive!

Sweetie's office's holiday party last night; mine is this afternoon.

I think I've mailed off all of the presents that need mailing; now I need to concentrate on wrapping those we give in person (mostly neighbors and Sweetie's family).

I've sent out all my Xmas cards except ones going to people in my office, and those should go out tomorrow. Decorated the Xmas tree (with lots of hassle) on Tuesday (tree with big trunk did not want to fit into a small tree stand - there's an O&E joke in there somewhere). I'm not nearly as ambitious as Masako, so I do very little holiday baking. I think I have one or two more gifts to buy (one big one for friends; the rest for Sweetie). I'm looking forward to some down time this weekend because the past two have been SO DANGED BUSY and I think I'm catching a cold. At least it's warm this morning (was 50 when Sweetie left for work). I even had time for cream of wheat and vienna sausage for breakfast.

    M - what's for breakfast this morning?

  18. M:

Good morning anklebiters, teejay, Shauna, Scott, sally and da hive!

    Happy friday! :)

Happy birthday to Scott, EMM386 and ACURADRIVER02! :)

    @Shauna, you up early again.

  19. Scott:

I so don't want to know what the black balloons are! :)

  20. matt:

morning all. a beautiful northern california morning, too.
Scott-don't sweat it, my man. things do go uphill for guys in their 30's. Just remember to check your Murtaugh List (any HIMYM fans here?)

QB, so many parties. I'm green with envy.

the main preparations I have before xmas involve gathering omiyage and packing.
    5 days to go.

  21. Ocean Lover:

With all this talk about birthdays..........I'm "21"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    OL.......he's "21" this morning

  22. Ocean Lover:

    Hey Queenie,

What you holding in your picture with CREATIVE? My eyes aren't the best but it looks like ah............um............ah...........

Both of you got "lucky" dat night? ;-)

    OL.....................just keeping the O & E "tradition" alive

  23. Shauna:

anklebiters: What are these black balloons you are talking about????

Ocean Lover: No can see? You poor thing! This one package had a minty flavor to it... That hint help?

  24. Ocean Lover:

    OL faints........................

    OL..............faints

  25. KAN:

OL: did you just turn 21, or have you been 21 for a while? In other words, today your birtday o wat?

    KAN. . . NKRemembah.

  26. Ocean Lover:

    KAN.............I turned 21......28 years ago. :-(

    Today I got post #21!

    OL..........back to fainting

  27. Shauna:

Ocean Lover: Why you fainting? You don't like those melt-in-your-mouth mints?? ;)

  28. KAN:

OL: does that mean I should wish you happy birfday today? Or am I late again? Or did I do it arready?

    KAN . . . fanning OL's fainted body.

  29. anklebiters:

    Shauna:

You have a ways to go before you'll see the black balloons :!:
If you were born in '59, that is the color of your balloons for your birthday this year

  30. Eli:

    Good morning and happy Friday!!

My office Christmas party is next Tuesday. There are still 7 more days of Christmas shopping so no rush. :P

Nice pics of the party. :)

  31. M:

We have a pah-tay tomorrow night and 2 company pah-tays next week....

By the way, Shauna my son had a soccer game against your Rough Riders wed night. Score was 1-1.

  32. BananaFysh:

    Good Morning Hive!

    KAN said:

tree with big trunk did not want to fit into a small tree stand

I BEElive the term you want is:
    "If no fit, put spit."

Nice party pics! (Even if you got scooped by MLC ;) )

  33. Shauna:

BananaFysh: Spit will really help get that big stump into that tiny stand??

I BEElive the term you want is:
    "If no fit, put spit."

Eh. MLC folks probably already forgot what was posted on Monday!

  34. M:

@Shauna, what was posted on Monday?

  35. Shauna:

M: See! I mean that was like days and days ago!! So are your company Christmas parties at fancy places?

matt: I think you're mistaken! I don't have any Christmas parties to go to. :(

  36. M:

@Shauna, just found out we have another pah-tay on Christmas eve also.

Our 2 company pah-tays will be at our shop/yard. We cater and BBQ.....

Shauna, you can go pah-tay with sally tomorrow night at HB....

  37. aokami:

Man, I gotta make it out to a triad one of these days. Baseball controls my life. But at least my son is doing well. Was good to hang out, and I'm looking forward to our Tweetup! We go getyum!

  38. anklebiters:

My son and his GF's 2 year anniversary is today....this is where they will be celebrating it, the lobster sounds so guud :!: .

    http://www.saltcellarrestaurant.com/

This is in contrast to my SM and her BF's 4 year anniversary today.... NOTHING ...she and her BF are not into these things I guess :-(

  39. KAN:

Wait, wait, Ankles, I thought your SM and her BF had broken up. Last I heard, he tried to call her and ID'd himself as her BF and she said "who?"

  40. visitor:

Good morning. We're having our "friends" Christmas party tomorrow night. Also, some small kind lunches and get togethers next week.

A MLC-like comment: Seems like Christmas is arriving so fast. I see the decorations, sales, and hear people saying Merry Christmas...but somehow the feeling is not there. Would be nice to recapture that feeling of Christmas we had as kids. Not so much just the parties, shopping, decorations, etc., but that anxious anticipation of Christmas Day. For me now it seems like the countdown to Christmas Day is just speeding ahead...and before I know it, it'll be here and gone...without much feeling.

  41. anklebiters:

    KAN:

Their relationship is a drama in itself...on one day...off the next. If I was him I would have left loooooong ago :!:

Her parents were in town last week and wanted to visit her at home....she freaked out because she didn't want her parent to know the BF lives there too. She was willing to put him up in a hotel for a couple of days during their visit :!: I'd be insulted if that happened to me....she realized it too afterward and changed her mind. They all had dinner together and the dad told her that he likes him  I guess the suit and tie the BF was wearing must have helped

  42. M:

@visitor, you are right, it doesn't feel like Christmas and it's just a week away and we are not ready.

I think masako went shopping today at Macy's. I got masako's gift over a month ago, a Stand up paddle board. To large to gift wrap or hide so it was an early gift. We still need to bake this weekend too.

  43. KAN:

@ankles: During high school, I briefly dated a guy who went to Iolani. He called my dad "sir" when they met - my dad remembers that to this day.

  44. M:

My daughters BF calls me uncle...

  45. Rod's Big Bro:

Hi all in the hive, just stopping by to say "Merry Christmas" to all. May this Bee a joyful time for all here at the hive and all the others at MLC & WWD. Sorry to have missed the pahtee, but better safe than sorry (small kine cold). Like the pic's looked like I missed out on the fun, but at least I got to eat da grab bag I couldn't bring, was "ONO".

  46. anklebiters:

    KAN:

First impressions.....that's the deal breaker/maker....and I haven't been wrong with any of my kids GF/BF.

  47. BananaFysh:

    @Shauna -

Spit will really help get that big stump into that tiny stand??

    Uhhhhhhhhhhh..... yes?

    ;)

  48. BananaFysh:

Very tired today. Was up late the last couple of nights making party mix. ;)

We had a "friends party" last weekend, and I think that's it. Just gotta prep for the family parties now. :)

Gotta wrap a whole bunch of bingo prizes now! Whoo hoo!
    :|

  49. matt:

    Shauna,
who needs individual parties to stop in a when your life is one big gala?

  50. Shauna:

visitor: That "Christmas feeling" you mention, or lack thereof, is very interesting. (Would make a good blog post, too... ;) ) I know what you mean but yet sometimes even wonder if I remember what that feeling is. MayBEE it's a kid's holiday as they don't know the stress it causes adults. I remember not getting my tree up until two weeks into the month and then I was actually debating forgetting about it this year cause it was "too late." I put some decorations up, but thought, gee, Christmas will almost BEE over. That's so sad! Why are we thinking so far ahead that we can't enjoy the moment we're in now? Maybe it's the retailers or the media that get us starting to think about it BEEfore Thanksgiving and not enjoying the holiday season as it is meant to BEE...

anklebiters: I like SM!! I think we'd get along great!! First impressions are definitely interesting. I notice that sometimes you "ignore" your first impressions and things "work out." But when they fall apart later, you can ask yourself what your first impression was and if it was less than positive, then you know you should've listened to yourself in the first place...

aokami: Glad your son is doing well in baseball! You gotta meet Ocean Lover, who plays chauffeur to all his son's activities, too! ;) Can't wait to plan our party!!

  51. Shauna:

Rod's Big Bro: Hope you are feeling better and Merry Christmas to you, too!

BananaFysh: I remember you doing those same things last year!! No, not the spitting part!

matt: Ooh, I like that... life BEEing one big gala!! :D

  52. matt:

    QB,
would you prefer "Soiree"? I figured, as a Q, one of the two would be apt, but a soiree refers to a night party while a gala can go around the clock.

  53. anklebiters:

The only thing that I have in my house that is Xmassy is a stocking, pic on FB. Hard to get into the XMAS spirit as the kids are all older and they have their own places to bee with their SO's family aside from their mom's and me.

There's a lot of single parents out there that feel like this song during the holidays.....

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LU4QkhduKg

Put a word or two in your prayers for them....

  54. M:

The holidays are rough on my kids. They have to spend time with their mom too, my ex, so they have to be at both places during the day. It's usually lunch with the mom and dinner at home with me...

  55. matt:

Y'all know I like country, but did you know I like...showtunes?
here's a christmas song that I think the hive needs right about now.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-QwVj8vdkA

  56. matt:

the actual number runs from about 2 minutes to about 530, but the clip is 9 minutes long.

  57. Kage:

    Happy Holidays Everyone.

Still do not know what we are doing as a family for Xmas. Most times we get together at on of the sister's homes. This year, no word yet.

No kids, so no decorating. The cats would go crazy with decorations if I did put anything up.

Today is the last day of work for the next two weeks!! I may check in from home once in a while... hehe. Not that I do this stuff only at work... *wink*

  58. teejay:

Anybody see 'Avatar'? I wonder if my son would enjoy it or if it's to intense for a pre-teen.

  59. matt:

    It's aloha friday...

  60. anklebiters:

    teejay:

Go and see it at an IMAX theater if you can. The trailer on the movie really looks interesting....

@matt - Oooh, I got a lil' grossed out when I read this:

who needs individual parties to stop in a when your life is one big gala?

Sorry, I read it wrong. I read it like was "gala-galas."

    I get um now though!
    "GAY-lah," not "GAH-lah."

    Whoops!!

    Banana ... very embarrassed

  68. BananaFysh:

Dang, I can't stop smirking at the thought of Queenie's life BEEing a BEEG gala-gala.

    Okay, I stop now!

  69. visitor:

@ Shauna #50 - I think you make a good point. The retailers and the media have made a joyful, innocent and meaningful season into a huge commercial venture. And we've all bought in (pardon the pun). We now have to get gifts for everyone, party with all of our social and work groups...all with the commercial intent of purchasing things. And this all squeezed into the 2-3 weeks following Thanksgiving.

Borrowing a theme from Rodney's MLC - recalling Christmas as a kid. That was simple, pure and exciting. We received a small number of gifts from people close to us. We, in turn, gave a small number of gifts to them. Not pressured to get gifts, grab bags, white elephants, gift cards, Lokahi donations, etc. for every group we are associated with. Maybe the feeling has faded because it's become something you need/have to do...another chore, with time lines and criteria, as opposed as something you took pleasure in.

  70. Ocean Lover:

Speaking of EMERGENCY GIFTS, what kind do you folks have on hand?

I'm at home (gotta burn vacation leave and wasted most of it as I was "FAINTED" ;-) ) and as I look in the "emergency gifts" box I see:

4 bags of assorted macadamia nuts
    Several cans of caramel popcorn
    3 cans of almond roca
    3 containers of cookies

These are for the "Oh hi there Elmer.....haven't seen you in 20 years! Oh....is this for me (Elmer gives me a Christmas gift).....try wait (quick dash to the EMERGENCY GIFTS box)

    OL.........BTW, there is no "Elmer"

  71. Ocean Lover:

    OMG! #69!!!!!!!!!!! Winnah!

    Oh, I'm sorry......that contest is PAU....right Banana? ;-)

OL.............thought he got "lucky" for a second

  72. BananaFysh:

@OL - We have some mac nut candy and a couple of gift cards for the "emergencies." ;)

What is this "contest" you speak of? I have no idea what you are talking about. ;)

Banana ... Thinking about changing his name to "Elmer"

  73. Ocean Lover:

Hey Banana...........yes, seems the "Emergency Gifts" grows larger each year. There's certain people that you "hope" don't give you any gifts. You don't see them for a long time and right around NOW they mysteriously show up. Perhaps if they get some RANCID CHOCOLATES they'll take the "hint"?

    OL...............hoping "Elmer" doesn't pay him a visit

  74. Ocean Lover:

Banana..........perhaps 3-4 $5 Jamba Juice cards "just in case"? If Elmer doesn't visit...........keep um for YOURSELF?

That's the way to play the "EMERGENCY GIFTS" game. ;-)

OL...............gotta make dinner as Da Wife BEE busy with wrapping

  75. anklebiters:

    BF:

Two bags of choco mac nuts
Two boxes of choco mac nuts
    4 bags of Kona coffee
    7 bags of kakidane
    a bag of wasabi peanuts
    5 Hawaii calendars

choco bacon - I'M KEEPING THIS ONE

    I'm prepared :!:

  76. BananaFysh:

@OL - Exactly! The "emergency" gifts will BEE used by us, but gotta have them "just in case."

Mrs. BF had to learn the hard way that we needed to have those on hand. ;)

We do the same thing with omiyage when we come back from the mainland. I get asked "WHO is this for?" But you KNOW that you will forget someone, and that "extra" omiyage has come in handy more than once! ;)

Sometimes you gotta give away the choco bacon to cover your a$$, ankles. ;)

  77. teejay:

I got my spy with me this weekend to get all my niece's and nephew's gifts. I have to add one new niece from my baby sister this year. My son's job is to ask them from around October what they would love to have and he gives me the dope later on.

  78. KAN:

@teejay: you're training your military intelligence operative early, I see. Smart! :-)

  79. teejay:

KAN: You got that right, although I hope he can skip the military for now. I think one soldier, marine, airman or sailor in the family is enough.
I had a work mate just comeback from Silverdale and she said it was cold up there two weeks ago. 18 degrees or so but I don't know if she was talking about Vancouver which she visited.

  80. David In Oregon:

@ BananaFysh (#66) no need to be embarrassed. I read it the same way the first time. I had to re-read it in order to catch my mistake. I blame it on this site...how O&E has affected me.

  81. anklebiters:

    Work tonight :-(

  82. anklebiters:

Ever try to shutdown 100 servers at once :?: :-)

  83. teejay:

ankles: I forgot to say congrats on your girl finally winning one (or I may have already). Hope Wie's next year is prosperous since Tiger is going to be sucking up to Mrs. Tiger.

  84. David In Oregon:

ankles: just find the main circuit breaker box.....

  85. teejay:

ankles: I actually did something like that in one second. At my work place there was (the key word is 'was') a fiber optic line that came from the ceiling and coiled under my desk and went back up (over 40 feet of underground grade fiber) which I tripped over and rolled over for six years. Every time we had upgrades done I asked the IT guys is this line was in use and everyone said no. I ask management to move it and nothing. I ask safety to write it up and nothing. After six years I got fed up and cut the line. Within 20 minuets I found out that the line was active and everyone wondered who was stupid enough to cut the line. I told them I did and they wanted me to pay for the reconnection and wanted to fire me. I responded with six years of emails (40 plus emails and my connection worked fine) and management backed off. The guys who had to reconnect the fiber laugh when I told them what happened. Cost was over $12000. All they had to do was address my concerns which would have been less than $50.

  86. David In Oregon:

teejay: they should have been glad you didn't only partially slice the line. Dead connections are easier to find. Intermittent connections will drive people nuts for a long time, as they try and find where it is.

  87. anklebiters:

    DiO:

Don't want to do that :!: I'll be spending all night FSCKing (chkdsk for you Windoze folks) the disks :!:

    teejay:

    :-)

  88. David In Oregon:

ankles...it'll be more than that. I predict an early start to your Christmas vacation. ;-)

  89. teejay:

DiO and ankles: You know how tough that underground fiber is. I had a pair of dikes (no, I wish) and it took me more than one second. I wish I had bolt cutters. The guys told me that that fiber was not suppose to be inside and overhead in the dropped ceiling. The main guy who rehooked it up was former army and me and him talked shop. We both were in weapons maintenance and went to the same school in Aberdeen, Maryland. Nice guy and first Gulf War vet.

  90. KAN:

@teejay: I wouldn't be surprised to hear it was 18 in Silverdale. That was last week during the cold snap when BL dem were here. It's now gotten (relatively) warm with highs in the 50's - warm enough so I wore just a thick sweater to work today instead of my usual coat.

Was supposed to go to a party tonight, but felt too yukky after awful bus ride home - taking it easy tonight.

  91. David In Oregon:

speaking of fiber optic cable, this is reminding me of slicing the fiber by hand. I think if i did that now, I'd need to use a large magnifying glass to see it.

  92. anklebiters:

    DiO:

I could use another vacation :-) Maybe I can make the HB get together tomorrow :!:

waiting for Qwest to upgrade their switches....

  93. anklebiters:

    KAN:

So nice here today, it was TOPLESS weather again....with the heater on :-)

  94. NaPueo:

Good to see you got to post your pictures!!! Different from that MLC fella. Yours also don't have photo credits to someone else. :)

  95. teejay:

KAN: Hope you feeling better. Okai or ochazuke with ume and kimchi. Green tea and a long hot bath or shower. Even though I have never met you and your sweetie I think of you guys everytime I bust out my uke (rare now), guitar or get together with friends and sing (Kanikapila is the bestest).

  96. anklebiters:

    Picture #137 - Bud Light Lime :-)

  97. teejay:

Speaking of million dollar dreams.....Is it illegal for me to give a 'friend' money to buy lotto tickets in another state that gambling is legal but I'm from a state that it is illegal? I was just wondering since I heard a story that complications resulted from that. I would never do such a thing but I'm just wondering in case that person wins.

  98. teejay:

ankles: I saw the bud lite lime at longs today. Is it worth buying?

  99. anklebiters:

    teejay:

Isn't that same as gambling in Vegas....in HI is illegal.

I don't think it matters if you live in a state that is illegal..it happens all the time with the powerball lottery. peeps from other states that don't allow lottery cross over to buy tickets.

  100. KAN:

Thanks teejay. Actually, had corned beef hash (!) and toast for dinner. Lots of loafing around tonight and a long hot shower did make me feel better. Time for bed. G'night Hive. Happy baking, M and Masako.

    Happy early birfday, Scott!

  102. KAN:

Gonna poach 100 again before bed time.

    !  = 100!

  103. KAN:

Augh! Got sniped! Good for Ankles!

'kay, really going to bed now.

  104. anklebiters:

Son just got back from his anniversary dinner at The Salt Cellar. He had the King Crab and filet. GF had Maine Lobster :!:
They said it was GUUD food....I should have had them take pictures.

  105. teejay:

ankles: Good. I just gave Wade $100 to give me lottery tickets in the Cal Lotto. If its illegal; I just joking. Great job on 100!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No dark place tonight and sorry if I offend anyone when I went there.

  106. anklebiters:

    KAN:

    I show you as #100....

  111. anklebiters:

  112. KAN:

Guuuuuud morning Hive! Am I awake earlier than OL? His neighbor must not have SLAMMED yet.

I feel better and I have lots to do today, so see y'all later.

  113. teejay:

    Morning all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

KAN: You are better!!!!!!!! sounds great. I know you still have to buy my gift so I won't keep you.

  114. teejay:

Get this hive; I just added my son as a 'friend' on 'facebook'. The end of times is upon us now. (for those that take me literally)

  115. teejay:

Woke my son up at six this morning. I tickle him until he can't go back to sleep, something I did from two years old so he knows the drill. Had him wash the dishes and still have to teach him how to arrange things. Frustrating like no other (fill in the blank).

  116. matt:

morning. bowl season is upon us. the first bowls on 2009/2010 start today.

  117. teejay:

matt: What are the lines? I have never put money down on games since it is illegal but I love the hear the odds. (yeah, right!) Who in Hawaii has not done that? If HPD is listening: teejay has never done that!!!!!!!!!
HPD is the worst and they know the best houses to bet.

  118. matt:

    teejay,
I'm not sure what "lines" are. what do they refer to? I did find this on the internet, though: Fresno St. -10.5 (Wyoming)
    Rutgers (-2.5) UCF

  119. teejay:

Okay: fake kine bets. I put 100 on Fresno and 100 on UCF. Lets see how teejay makes out legally and for fun (yeah, right).

  120. teejay:

let me clarify that last post.
Shauna, the Advertiser or its owners have never agreed to or promoted gambling online or in Hawaii. I was joking and if you have problems with that...talk to me directly and leave this post alone....unless you have some options and would like to join the hive.

  121. teejay:

anybody who i have as an facebook friend, I would like to let you know that I don't respond not because I don't like you but because I don't respond, perioid. My son is telling me I suck at facebook and I'm laughing my butt off.

  122. teejay:

Wade: See you later. Hope you and your son have a safe trip home.. Thanks for haning with teejay and his suckeeness. Props to you and your USC son who will be graduating in May in Biology!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WAy to go big guy.

  123. Shauna:

Morning! Woke up to reach for my glasses and one of the side frames was bent at an ODD angle. (Did I smash it in the middle of the night and not know???) So I'm blindly trying to move it back to its proper position but it's really stuck. So I start to pull and tug harder and the fricken glasses BREAK right in the middle of the frame! The lens are fine but they are like individual magnifying glasses now (yes, they are really thick!)! So I get this bright idea to tape it together (like how you see in those Revenge of the Nerds type of movies). So I stumble to find the tape and stick my face one inch away from the glasses so I can see when I piece it together. I finish it and put the glasses on and it falls right off. I guess gift-wrap tape doesn't hold together very well?? Luckily I find a really old pair of glasses but it's still blurry. I'm wondering if this was my sign to have done that eye surgery or just to order a new pair of glasses before the year ends since insurance covers that...

    Anyways...

KAN: You actually got #100 since one comment was in moderation!

teejay: Are you sure your son wanted to BEE friends with you on Facebook?

Kage: Make sure you do check in while you're not at work!! :D

Ocean Lover: Uh-oh, I better start preparing my emergency stash also! But I like the idea of getting stuff I know I could use for myself after. I think Jamba was offering a free smoothie for every $20 or $25 you buy in gift cards...

NaPueo: Yup, at least I took the time to take my own photos and not steal someone else's one!! ;)

  124. Shauna:

anklebiters: Thanks for all the music! Sorry that you don't get to see your kids as often now that they are older but it does seem you guys make an effort to go lunch or dinner pretty regularly. :) What are you getting them for Christmas?

teejay: I bet if you won a lot of money, the friend who got your ticket will insist to get a big cut... Friendships end over money problems!!

matt: All packed for your vacation in chilly Hawaii? ;)

  125. teejay:

Shauna: Wade and me know each other since 1974. Yes we have been friends for thirty five/six years. If he was to dis me or I was to do the same we both know we would lose more than money.
Nice try by me and my boy are good to go.

  126. anklebiters:

    Shauna:

Take your frame to an eye glass place and they may be able to weld them together. If not....guess what you're getting for Xmas this year from you :?:

I see my kids several times a week...two of them live about 10 minutes away and my daughter lives in Scottsdale. She drops by since I am babysitting her dog for the last two years :!: I just had lunch with my youngest and went to Target to buy my "grandson" a toy that makes a "lot of noise". I hope I won't be disowned by his mom for the noise makers

Red Lobster will give you a 3% discount on gift cards if you buy $250 or more. I ended up buying $350 so it paid for the beers  The kids and their SOs are getting gift cards this year. So much easier :!: The oldest and his GF will be in La Jolla for the Xmas weekend. SM will be visiting her parents in Irvine for a week and leaving on Xmas day for a week. Since her parents like her BF, he'll be flying up next week

  127. Shauna:

anklebiters: Oh! I never thought about that!! I love Red Lobster! I've only BEEn there once but it was good. The house bread is really ono!! :)

    Hello!
Sorry about your glasses Shauna... welcome to our (MLC) world. Real pain in da okole.

Great tunes anklez! Thanks! If not for you I wouldn't know current music. I like Joss Stone's voice, lotta soul... it's not "generic" like some others.

  147. anklebiters:

I'm hung up on the Lady Antebellum song...I have to play their live version from the 2009 CMA Awards.....I know, I hate cow music but this one I'll make an exception...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYA0GO-07XE

  148. sally:

Love that, anklez. um, who's da guy? kinda cute.

  149. anklebiters:

    sally:

I'm slowly converting all of the MLCers to alternative music :-) Classic rock has been around for 40+ years and it'll bee around for another 40+. Today's songs are pretty good :!: My kids friend always tell me, "Mr. K., you're cool listening to our music" . Can't get a better compliment than that.

My SM was asking me today what I was listening to and I told her songs that are going to be released in Jan 2010.

    SM: Why :?:
ME: So I can feel young :!:
    SM: HUH :?:
ME: If I wanted to feel young I'd be listening to it 24/7 :!:
    SM: That's what I was thinking too ... :-)

  150. sally:

anklez: these kinds of tunes are good. It's the Lady Gala Gala and Britney and those ODD repetetive cr@ppy stuff that I can't stand. And it repeats every 45min on the radio... drives me insane!

  151. David In Oregon:

    GOOD AFTERNOON QB AND HIVE.

Sorry, had to type in all caps so QB can see. ;-)

  152. teejay:

Shauna: The season has ended and no more dark place for me. You can rescind my privileges anytime.
    DiO: Afternoon all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  153. teejay:

Going to a company party with my son. I'm crashing it since I didn't pay but I just want to show the idiots I have to work with. Taxi is coming and we'll catch a taxi back. My brother is at the Pac Beach with our nephew. teejay is going tactical.

  154. David In Oregon:

QB: What is your eyeglass frame made of, metal or plastic?

  155. Shauna:

David In Oregon: Thanks for typing in caps!! Much easier to see!! :) I think my frames are metal. It's copper looking...

teejay: Hana okolele (can't remember what phrase was used earlier!), you party crasher!!

I'm debating if I should take an invite to dinner at Roy's Waikiki... still got lots of things to do and my place is a MESS!!

  156. David In Oregon:

how can a person who lives in a protective germ free bubble, have a place that is a mess?

  157. David In Oregon:

good luck with trying to get your eyeglasses fixed. Everytime I've tried to get metal frames fixed, it seemed like I was quoted a timeframe of 1-3 weeks. If you know of someone that has a soldering iron, and if you're willing to take the chance, you could try and do it yourself. Just remember to remove the lenses from the frame first.

  158. David In Oregon:

Oh yeah, and use the correct type of solder, not the electrical type.

  159. Ukuhead:

Shauna: Get the surgery so you can go from  to  ... My vision is better than 20/20 now, so I look good.

Dinner at Roy's sounds like it would come with some pretty heavy strings.. or is that just me

I'll be at TJ's tonight with some of the wife's work friends so if anyone isn't busy, stop on by.

  160. Ukuhead:

btw: what odd things were you doing to break your glasses like that?

  161. M:

    Good afternoon hive!

BEEzy day. Started off going to Macy's at 7 this morning, taking son to dentist appointment after and just get back from his soccer game. We beat Kaiser 1-0. Getting ready to go to a pah-tay soon.

  162. Ukuhead:

Hi DiO and M... and whoever else is out there..

    HI SHAUNA

  163. David In Oregon:

Ukuhead: I'm not sure I want to know what QB did to break her glasses....especially not after reading one of her previous blog entries

"So I'm HNL and I keep my legs in the air at certain times. Not a pretty picture! Haha!"

  164. David In Oregon:

Ukuhead: To encourage our leader to get her eyes zapped, you got to make your post using the smallest font you can find.

  165. snow:

good evening HIVE! hope everyone is enjoying their weekend... last weekend BEEfore christmas! i'm BEEzy at work... :( when am i gonna finish my shopping and mail my gifts??

happy birthday scott, emm386 and acuradriver02!! so did all of you get combined christmas and birthday gifts while growing up (or even now?)?

  166. Scott:

    Aloha Hive :)
Snow, it's bad enough that my birthday is 6 days away from that Jesus fella, but I also have a twin!
I get no respect this time of year :(
I kept saying to myself "I'm 30", and it sounded really weird.
Kidding, we just came back from a great Christmas party that our neighbors hold every year for 20 plus years now. Lots of old friends and memories. I saw my first girlfriend, she's got 2 kids now and she was talking to my wife. It was really trippy, lots of memories in that moment :)
Good times, love this time of year.

  167. Shauna:

Scott: I'm sure you're receiving a lot of birthday love!! :)

snow: Uh-oh, when are you going to finish your shopping???

David In Oregon: Thanks! With those instructions, I'm sure I'll BEE able to fix the glasses by myself!

Ukuhead: I didn't do anything to the glasses and that's the ODD thing! It happened overnight while I was sleeping...

  168. teejay:

Just got back from my company party and my brothers daughters winter prom. I got pics for both. Everyone at my party told me to just sit down and eat with my son but both me and him and my brother and his wife and my sisters son ate at the hamberger restaurant next door. I had a blast walking Kalaukaua. I haven't done that in 25 plus years. I asked all the cute japanese girls if they wanted me to take their picture. I'm a sick individual and it is so noted. All my work mates were dressed up and I was in jeans and a t shirht so I stood out but everyone still asked me to stay and that is only because of my son who the saw for the first time.

  169. David In Oregon:

QB: Just make sure you put the lenses back in the glasses correctly. Otherwise you'll have to look through your glasses cross-eyed.

  170. David In Oregon:

QB: I speak from experience at fixing eyeglasses. I can't count the number of times I've had to do repairs while thousands of miles from home. It makes me think I need to have 5-10 backup pairs of glasses.

  171. Scott:

teejay: was is at Pacific Beach hotel?
I miss Kalakaua and Japanese girls, especially when I was single.

  172. Shauna:

David In Oregon: Wow, can't BEElieve how often your glasses break! And it didn't even dawn on me that this could happen when I'm on a trip!

teejay: You bad bad boy!!

  173. David In Oregon:

    teejay: warui

  174. Ukuhead:

Ukuhead: I didn't do anything to the glasses and that's the ODD thing! It happened overnight while I was sleeping...

Well then you must have ghost... j/k

Maybe it's possibly the ants seeking revenge.

  175. KAN:

Guuuuud morning Hive! I'm posting late in the morning, but I'm still posting ahead of OL.

KAN . . . something must be wrong in the universe.

  176. KAN:

Happy birthday EMM 386 and Acuradriver02! Many happy returns!

  177. M:

    Good morning Hive!

    It's baking Sunday...

    Happy Birthday EMM386 and Acuradriver02! :)

  178. Shauna:

    Morning!! Woo-hoo! Slept nearly 12 hours!! :D

  179. sally:

    Good Morning Hive!

Looks like it's the last ditch Sunday to do all our things before Rudolph gets hitched up.

We got a flood watch extended for Oahu now? I guess it's not safe to hang laundry?

    Shauna: marathon sleeping!

  180. KAN:

@snow, #165: Sweetie has a co-worker who does all her shopping just before Christmas. ALL her holiday shopping - she hasn't even started yet. Apparently she's taking Wednesday off to do all of it. Of course, I don't know if she has any mailing to do - I think all her family lives in this area.

  181. sally:

KAN: That would BEE way too stressful for me, but I realize some people thrive on it. Hey, if it works for them then hooray! I'm a bad shopper, I need time.

*shopping for gifts last minute does NOT work for me.

  182. Shauna:

sally and KAN: If you just do gift cards, it would BEE so much easier... Mall gift cards — gotta find something you can use in the whole mall. Longs or Starbucks/Jamba pretty much covers everyone also. I really should do that one year. Plus no wrapping. Just stick the gift card in the Christmas card...

  183. visitor:

    Good morning...still barely morning.

Too much party last night. Good thing it's rainy...don't feel bad about not doing nothing. (Sorry double negative)

Started raining again. I thought it was supposed to be a nice and sunny weekend? Gotta go out shortly...battle the mall, again.

  184. David In Oregon:

YM-QB: 12hrs of sleep? Sheesh, and I thought I hibernated... Did you put a sign out that says, "Do Not Wake Until Christmas" ?

  185. sally:

@QB: I got a Starbucks gift card for a Grab Bag last night and was just as excited about the little knitted red mitten that was used as the gift bag. So cute. It's the litte things that make a gift card not just a gift card.

visitor: Flood Watch has been extended from BI up thru Oahu. Very deceiving cuz it's very sunny and beautifully cool and breezy right now.

anklebiters: Great songs! We are friends in The Hive!! :D

  198. teejay:

Happy b'day to the two hive members!!!!!!!!!!!

  199. teejay:

I was at the Oceanarium last night waiting for my brother and nephew. Sitting at the bar since they were booked for the night. The buffet looked ono and I asked the chef doing the pasta if I could taste the two sauces (red and white) and they were great. They has a whole bunch of pasta ready for finishing the dish along with fresh shrimp, muscles and calamari. The prime rib look ono too. They crab legs, sashimi, poke, fresh fruit, shrimp tempura and so many other dishes. I think I'll take my son there for dinner one night.

  200. teejay:

    200!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Woo-hoo!!!

  201. M:

    Still baking...

  202. sally:

M: Gosh I'm glad I don't live next door to you and Masako, the smell of fresh baking would make me crazy! I'd be outside your kitchen window all drooling.

teejay: your lucky son, is he already planning what he's gonna eat?

  203. teejay:

sally: My son loves pasta and sashimi. He gave the marinara sauce a taste and he loved it. He also loved the aquarium and they even a a light christmas tree inside of it.

  204. sally:

teejay: oooh, that christmas tree in the aquarium sounds really pretty. Yes!...take your son, it'll be something he'll remember for sure.

btw, sashimi at a buffet? dangerous! LOL I don't eat sashimi but I went to a buffet last weekend and saw a guy... half his plate was sashimi. I smiled at him and said "think of it as eating my share". ha!

  205. M:

A few more hours of baking to go...

  206. David In Oregon:

M: Hours? What are you and Masako trying to do, feed all of O'ahu?

  207. HNL2LAS:

Happy birthday to Scott, EMM386 and Acuradriver02!

  208. M:

@DiO, maybe not quite all of Oahu..... :)

  209. Ocean Lover:

    Good Evening!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just did another "ho da shame" thing.

I peeked out the living room window and I saw a silhouette of a man by my driveway. I walked to another window by the garage and see him bending over and its DARK OUTSIDE and I'm wondering "What the heck is that guy doing????" He's just outside of the range of the flood lights with the motion sensors and I'm wondering if he's up to no good.

Seeing that its kinda early in the evening (lots of the neighbors are awake) and we're on a main road I open the garage door and TURN ON THE LIGHT ready to say "Eh.....what the HELL are you doing?" and then I see this BEEyootiful Alaskan Husky looking at his owner.....PICKING UP THE DOG POOP that he just made.

OL...........was gonna yell at A NEIGHBOR

  210. M:

When you get that oven going, might as well bake a lot...

Our Kitchen Aid mixer broke down midway, I guess we over worked it, so we had to use the hand mixer which took longer.....

  211. NEO:

    Great photos Queenie-

So sorry that I have been awol for 2009. Especially this past weekend has been very trying for all of our family. Dad had a reaction to medications so he ended up going to Emergency yesterday morning, he'll be home tomorrow so that'll be a Christmas Blessing. I just want you to know that I'm so grateful to the Hive and the rest of the bloggers on the Advertiser for their antics, their good humor and their "friendship." I know that we haven't ever met IRL, something that I hope to change in the coming year, but I consider all of you friends... Special thanks to the Queen, for writing the blog and giving us topics to BS about... Hope to see you all IRL soon in 2010.

    Much aloha!

M: Good thing for Plan B. And good for you!... helping Masako. The recipient will feel that much more love from that goodies.

M: Wow, I never heard of a Kitchen-Aid dying. You and Masako must've been mixing enough to feed all of Honolulu.

  215. M:

Time to shower and go to bed. I'm so tired....

  216. sally:

  218. Shauna:

Hello hello! Went to Sansei for Happy Hour tonight. Everything is 50% off! Well, not the foie gras something or another. Not that like that would matter to me! Most popular dish of the night? A truffle ramen...

  219. sally:

This cracks me up. M just said how he's so tired... Masako is on FB in Farmville now. hahaha... I guess she's "winding down".

  220. NEO:

Shauna- The Lobster and truffle Ramen is a WINNAH!!! :o ) someone wanna explain what the hell foie gras is?!?! I know it has something to do with duck or something like that... :o )

  221. David In Oregon:

NEO: Do you really wanna know?

  222. Shauna:

NEO: I had a bite and it wasn't that bad. Kinda had a buttery taste. Or am I just saying that cause someone told me that? Haha! Foie gras is some animal's liver. Forget which one. People were offering it to me but heck no was I going to try it! It did look like BBQ chicken in the dark!! People were raving about it though...

Ready to call it a long day. The weather really got nice after we left East Honolulu at about lunch time. Town-side was already nice and sunny.

Long day at the mall and a couple of other shopping places. But it was productive. Just about finished...only a couple more on my list, but will probably get gift cards. Daughters and wife have a lot of energy...walk, walk, walk. After I get my stuff, I just sit and watch the "scenery" walk by.

Shauna: Alan O. just blogged about meeting you. Boy, you got him duped...
