Who wants 'Big John' for free?

November 25th, 2009 by Shauna

Here's an ODD story I just found that sounded a bit interesting. Any takers of "Big John?"

Free to good home: Carrier USS John F. Kennedy
Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA — The U.S. Navy plans to give away the retired aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy for a museum or memorial.

The ship is currently in docked in Philadelphia with other retired warships.

The Navy says the deadline for submitting initial applications is Jan. 22. Bidders have to be a government or nonprofit group that pledges to use the ship as a museum or memorial. The winner gets the ship for free, but will be responsible for moving the 1,050-foot vessel from Philadelphia to its new home.

Known as “Big John,” the ship was the last conventionally powered aircraft carrier built by the Navy. It once carried a crew of about 4,600 and 70 combat aircraft. It entered Navy service in September 1968 and was decommissioned in 2007.

-----

One can only wonder how high the moving fees would be...

But speaking of big ships, how many of you have been on one?

  6. teejay:

What's considered a big ship anyway? I may have been on one or two in my day.

  7. Ocean Lover:

Holy Crap! I just got home and get one pic posted already!

Queenie........you get up EARLY and you stay BEEzy huh? ;-)

OL..............wondering if Big John can fit in his bathtub

  8. issunboshi:

I have been on a tour of the huge warship in San Diego's seaport area while there for a tradeshow for work...It really is an amazing feat of engineering, but to think that people live in such cramped quarters for months at a time is crazy!

Let's prove that we can maintain the Mighty Mo and the Falls of Clyde before thinking about this one...

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone out there!

  9. Wade:

That is one nice piece of hardware. I don't know why the US Navy doesn't provide assistance in moving and maintaining the ship to a city that would like to preserve it as a museum. It's in our national interest to educate future generations of the history and costs of peace through superior fire power.

I think the wahine match is on ESPNU!

  10. BananaFysh:

    New post? SNEAKY! ;)

    Free boat? :D

Dang, too bad my subdivision doesn't allow boats that can BEE seen from the street. ;)

  11. Ocean Lover:

    On Topic......... ;-)

When Da Teenager was in the Cub Scouts they had an overnighter on the USS Missouri. We slept on those tight, cramped "bunks" where the one above is like a couple of inches from your eyeballs.

And did I mention its CRAMPED? One of those rotten lil scouts made a fart while we TRIED TO SLEEP.............gross!

I kept thinking that there'd BEE spooks but didn't have any! Guess I was a lil disappointed. :-(

OL.......slept on a BIG SHIP BEEfore

  12. Ocean Lover:

Hey Banana! I was waiting for you and you nevah arrive today!

Time to see if I can watch the Wahine's on t.v.

    OL..........."out"

  13. BananaFysh:

Wahine volleyball is on at 4:30 on ESPNU

    Go Bows! :)

  14. BananaFysh:

@OL -- Yeah, my minions went in a circle. :(

Time ti find some new minions I think. ;)

  15. Ocean Lover:

Hey! I kept switching the channels and got basketball....both boys and girls. 4:30 p.m. ya say Banana? Okay. Perhaps I should take a "power nap" till then............ (yawn)

  18. HNL2LAS:

ohhh yum yum! Hi ynaku!! Have fun on O'ahu!

Congrats to Jack for first today!

I've been on the Missouri too. I helped paint it 10-11 years ago! My painted area is sorta kinda near where they signed the end of the war paperwork stuff!

  19. EMM386:

Have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Hope you all have fun on Saturday. Wish I could join you, but I have other plans.

  20. anklebiters:

That sure is a nice group photo.....my mom give her approval of my new friends

The biggest ship I've been on is the QE , in Longbeach. The Spruce Goose was also there at that time before they moved it.

    BF:

Can you have your minions row that boat to AZ for me...it would save me the transportation cost. I can park it in our subdivision lake and charge a fee which we can use for our annual pah-tay

  21. anklebiters:

    TDK:

I thought Yanaku's wife looked familiar

  22. Scott:

My new house has rv parking, but I'd have to remeasure to see if it'll fit Big John.

  23. NKHEA:

Okay just back from lunch with snow, opso, and UR, 8O

The biggest ship I've BEEn on was last year on our Alaskan Cruise "Golden Princess" :D in fact that same ship comes in to port here during the winter months, which is now ;) :)

OL...........still hanging on to some wisps of hair

  25. teejay:

    Go Wahine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. teejay:

    Volleyball time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  27. turk fontaine:

I went on the USS Ranger in Coronado, CA before that carrier was decomished and cut up for razor blades.

Women crew were not yet common so the only female in sight was a friend of mine who went on the impromptu tour with seven of us guys, which was arranged by the XO.

The lower and lower we went down thru the decks, the worse the BO got and the more humid it got, and the noisier it got.

My friend said she had to pee. We followed the XO as he lead us thru countless hatches, up and down countless ladders. We all had to follow because we'd be lost if we didn't.

Finally we came to a pink door (really) marked 'women's head'. She went in. We waited. Crew members started gathering, looking at the pink door, wondering what was going on. A huge sailor said; "Is there a woman in there?"

When she stepped out, a crescent of about two dozen men were standing there looking at her. We resumed the tour. I leaned in and whispered in her ear; " Ever feel like a wounded wildebeest?"

  28. BananaFysh:

@anklebiters -- Hm, I think I'll need a few more minions to get that bad boy over to AZ. ;)

  29. teejay:

Wahine kicking okole and taking names.

  30. Ynaku:

Hui. Some fast eh she went post da pitcha. And I NOT married to BL, but then nothing wrong with that so long da buggah rich and can pay my mortgage. :P

Eh, you guys welcome. Only small kine stuff.

psst .... I went give da three of dem one bottle cookies so go visit dem and scrounge some Donna's cookies. :P

I stay some tired. Nuts going shopping AlaMos and Don Quixote (neva get parking). Went Safeway on Beretainia and Pensacola and had to stalk da shoppers to grab their stall. Good fun. Oh we ended up having lunch at Likelike cause they wanted to go Ross. Neva get pahking too. Aiya. But all is good cause I stay with my G'baby now.

Auright, Heinie lite anyone? Might go Kochis for dinner with da in-laws.

  31. Ynaku:

KAN?????????????? XOXO thank you for the goodies. How thoughtful of you. Hope I get a chance to meet you one day.

  32. teejay:

Hawaii wins set one and two and have 25 points left to take the WAC and go to the final 64.

  33. Ocean Lover:

    Ynaku bruddah! Howzit and mahalo!

Wish the weather was a lil nicer for you and your family. No worry....tomorrow going BEE BEEyootiful!

Hope you munching along with your Heiny Lite. ;-)

OL............Ynaku's in DA JUNGLE of Waikiki

  34. Ocean Lover:

  35. Ynaku:

OL, thanks for da munchies. Eh maybe da wife going let you come Saturday. :P If not at least we got to meet up today. Das da main thing.

  36. teejay:

UH having problems in set three. The Wahine trying to get cute instead of taking care of buisness. They're down 1-4.

  37. teejay:

UH still down 15-12 in set three.

  38. teejay:

UH trails in set three 21-18.

  39. teejay:

UH trails 21-20. Time out NM St.

  40. teejay:

I think Dave trying to fool other teams.

  41. teejay:

    Nice ROOF for Hawaii!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  42. teejay:

    Tied 22-22.

  43. teejay:

UH leads 23-22 for the first time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  44. Creative:

Wow what an odd time to post O&E. :)

  45. teejay:

    UH wins in three!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  46. teejay:

The NCAA's RPI systems sucks the big one. Hawaii is ranked 3rd in the nation by the coaches (Yes, I said the coaches and not some dumb okole in a suit sitting at the NCAA headquarters in Bung hole, USA) but they have a RPI rating of 21 and that seeds you in the so called tournament that the NCAA has. What dip weed works this. Dave is more politically correct than me but I'll say that the NCAA sucks and they are not here to make things even among the schools or give a rat's a$$ if the student graduates!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NCAA sucks!!!!!!!!!!

The dark place sometimes helps.

  47. Shauna:

    Creative: ODDness rules here! ;)

The Dork Knight: One naturally would assume the lady to the farthest right would indicate that person BEEing his wife... I must as well save words where I can!

    Scott: So...did Big John fit?

turk fontaine: I think I would get lost in that maze of hallways, hatches, ladders also... And interesting tale of your friend...

HNL2LAS: Cool...you remembered the spot you painted!!

  48. Shauna:

EMM386: Sorry we will BEE missing you again!

issunboshi: Yeah, I wouldn't think ship maintenance is the easiest thing... Have a great turkey day and hope to see you on Saturday!

NKHEA SAID WE ARE BUMPING UP THE MEETING TIME ON SATURDAY TO 5 P.M. FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO WATCH THE UH GAME...

  49. Creative:

Cool! So now I guess the place is the only thing up in the air? :)

  50. opso:

    good evening!

Ynaku - thanx for da goodies braddah! brah.....I me and my co-workers ;) when pound em awready. buggah was some guuud! :D

was nice meeting your family and hope y'all have a great time here. dang! too bad I no can make em to KG on Sat. waaah!

ha come you come i stay go BI? haha! but now i can go grind one Koji's loco! auriite!

  51. opso:

    pahtay and UH game too?!!!

    5x WAAAAAAHHH!!!

  52. opso:

teejay - the wahine had one shmall kine hiccup in 3rd game but they showed their mettle and pulled it out. w00t! :D

    and yeah......da RPI sucks!

  53. Shauna:

teejay: Yeah, what is a big ship? Big is definitely relative... Thanks for the game updates, as usual!

Ocean Lover: So the bunks are smaller than a twin size?? Are there beds for two? ;)

anklebiters: Glad your mom approves of your new friends! ;)

BananaFysh: Time to find new slaves! Hopefully competent ones this time!

  54. Shauna:

Creative: The place is at Kaimuki Grill in .... Kaimuki! Nah, do you know where that place is?

opso: MayBEE Ynaku will get back BEEfore you leave?? We'll miss you!

  55. teejay:

opso- I think Dave was doing some pre-planning for the regionals. He didn't set Kanani or Aneli as much in the third set. I still want to see more of Amber in the middle but it was a great match.

Shauna: I've been on ships over 300 foot but the JFK is over 900. I feel sorry for the city or state that wants that money pit. The Mighty MO takes millions of kala to upkeep and berth.

HIVE MEMBERS: Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and give thanks or a thought to those serving overseas apart from their loved ones and also stay safe.

  56. opso:

OL - good seeing you again today brah! too bad you couldn't join us for lunch.............cause NKHEA was treating! :D

NKHEA - thanx again! you betta stop treating so much. bumbye i going call you for lunch/pahtay more often. ;) :P haha!

  57. KAN:

    @ TDK, #16: FIST BUMP!!!

@ ankles, #20: I got to stay on the Queen Mary in Long Beach a couple of times about 12-13 years ago. The rooms were tiny (not, not Nitro). I was afraid I'd see something supernatural (certain rooms and passage ways are said to be haunted), but I'm glad I didn't. Walls are thin, though. (Don't ask me how I know.) ;-)

@Ynaku: you da nice one. If the world were populated with more people like you, it would be a MUCH better place. Have fun partying wit da Hive. And Happy Thanksgiving!

  58. KAN:

I have a question for those of you who have spent more time IRL with NKHEA than I have: Does he ALWAYS have dat big poke-eating grin on his face? He just cracks me up!

  59. Shauna:

KAN: Yes! :D :D So are you doing any cooking for tomorrow?

  60. anklebiters:

Mooooosic time..........I'll list the tracks on the latest Triad Mix Shauna will have to release it as it'll be under moderation due to lots of U2B links :-)

  61. NaPueo:

Have only visited ships when they have open house. Don't stay on overnight. Need to hear from someone who knows. Do they still "hot bunk"?

  62. KAN:

@QB: I'm doing very little cooking. Just Sweetie and me tomorrow-I'm hoping to be able to stay the entire day in my pajamas. We've picked up a lot of prepared food that I just need to heat up (or put on a plate, in the case of dessert). I am preparing a salad (big deal!!!), mashed potatoes, gravy, and dinner rolls.

    What about you, QB?

  63. Shauna:

anklebiters: Music!! I have the CD replaying in my car! So far I'm the only one with it!!

    NaPueo: Hot bunk????

KAN: No cooking for me!! We do takeout! :D

    KAN:

I don't think I could sleep where its so cramped...I'd be claustrophobic :!:

  66. teejay:

I will tell you what I am thankful for on this holiday. My son will spend his first Thanksgiving will me since 1999. Yes, it has been ten years since I have eaten turkey with my son and it will be a great day regardless how the turkey or the ham turns out. That my friends is Thanksgiving!!!!!

  67. anklebiters:

    Shauna:

    Posted the music tracks....

    teejay:

That's the best Thanksgiving that you can have :!: A hot dog would even taste guud

  68. anklebiters:

Family ordered the turkey dinner from The Kahala again....mom is too old to be cooking and they don't have a deep fryer so I can make the deep fried turkey. I've tried the Safeway and Fry's turkey/ham dinners over the years and it doesn't compare closely to The Kahala package.

  69. teejay:

ankles: From me to you,'thanks.' I hope you and yours have a great one!!!!!!

  70. jack:

    Good evening hive 8)
I'm attempting to watch Glee and I think I may lose a few brain cells if I don't turn the tv off. :?

    Everyone have a GREAT Thanksgiving!

  71. Shauna:

anklebiters: Songs out of moderation! And wow, turkey from The Kahala!! Let me know how that tastes. Razzleberry pie for dessert? ;)

teejay: How did you manage to get your son after 10 years for Thanksgiving??

  72. honda si boy:

    Party on Saturday?

  73. anklebiters:

    HAPPY early BIRTHDAY NKHEA :!:

  74. Shauna:

jack: I think you're only confused cause you never watched from the BEEginning!! Don't give up yet! Wait till you hear the singing!

  75. anklebiters:

    Shauna:

I looked for it at Safeway...they don't sell Marie Calendar products it seems. I haven't stopped at Walmart to see if they have it.

  76. sally:

Hello Hive! Long day at work is PAU and long weekend coming up!

teejay: (#65) made me smile and get warm fuzzies. I BEE so happy for you!

Shauna: A bunch of us got together and took a full guided tour on the Mighty Mo, it was really good! Being afraid of heights I had kinda hard time doing the ladders and stairs and going near the edges, small kine twinges in the tummy when that happened. But I would recommend it to anyone!

They said it's a "functioning" ship so when we were in the control room they said "Don't touch any controls". Of course, my friend and I took pics of pretending to touch...

  77. sally:

My daughter will BEE joining me for Thanksgiving this year. Her dad is going to his brother's house in Haleiwa, wants to drive his 'vette and take his new girlfriend... so he told my ...HIS... daughter she has to drive herself if she wants to go. This uncle just moved back from the mainland so she really wanted to go but daddy wants to BEE l'dat so she said "scr-w it" She'll get with them another time.

Sorry, venting. But she's excited to spend the holiday with her new baby cousin.

  78. anklebiters:

    sally:

Don't you just hate vette owners :?:

  79. sally:

    awwww, I wouldn't say that.

Just upsets me cuz family ALWAYS comes first. Da Dodo Head.

So... back to topic. Lettsee, if Scott takes the boat and parks it at his new home, we'll all have someplace to stay when we go visit. Hive Slumber Party.

@OL: bunks on the ship are mighty tight quarters. One fart and the whole place gets fumigated! Kinda disappointed there were no ghosts. Call GhostHunters next time, I'd love to see if they find anything.

  80. teejay:

Shauna: After all those years the hate and the anger abate. His mom and I now work better now than we did when we were together. My son, the real TJ get's to spend a weekend with me. Simple but at the same time it 'SUCKs or did suck!' Ten years is a long time but I always look at each day I have him instead of what day I had him. It has always been his time with me and not my time with him.

  81. teejay:

sally: I usually give warm feelings, if you know what I mean.

  82. M:

    Good evening hive!

My sons soccer team scrimmaged Farrington today in the rain. We won 3-1 my son score again... :)

  83. KAN:

    Good for you, teejay.

    Happy birthday, NKHEA!

Gotta go sleep, I'm FAAK. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

  84. Ynaku:

@sally, speaking of Fart...we went to Kochis AFTER I drank 2 beeas at the condo and they gave me dessert after the meal. Guess what kind? Yep Ice Cream. I no need the "pencil" but whoo hoo  who cut da cheese?????

  85. sally:

    Good Job Little M!

@teejay: "warm feelings" like when somebody pee in the water at the beach?

*try to avoid going where got plenny keiki swimming

  86. Ynaku:

I made points with the in-laws. They enjoyed Kochis. Plenty fuud and ono. I don't know about the New York Steak though. I ordered Med Rare and came out Med Well. I think that was my son's meat steak :P cause his was more bloody than mine. And was tough.

  87. teejay:

sally: Kinda like that. 'Marco' 'Polo'!!!!!!

  88. M:

@Ynaku, We love Kochi's, masako knows the cook. I will make sure that she tells him about that steak. My FIL wanted his steak med rare and it was well done. He sent it back and masako scolded him when he came out to say hello.

  89. NaPueo:

    Happy Thanksgiving to all!

  90. sally:

@teejay: so you can play that game "you're getting warmer...warmer..."

  91. visitor:

@ M - Last time I went to Kochi, I saw you and Masako...recognized you from O&E photos. I knew Aaron at the sushi bar, he still there?

  92. sally:

@visitor: Did you go say hello to them? They are the nicest people! Are you going to Kaimuki Grill on Sat? Another chance to meet everyone IRL.

Shauna: did I RSVP? Can't remember.

  93. snow:

good evening HIVE! happy thanksgiving! happy birthday, NKHEA!

ynaku - it was so nice to see you today - and glad we were all able to meet your family, too! thanks for all the goodies - you're too sweet to think of us! :)

NKHEA - thank you for lunch!! you didn't have to treat, but it was nice of you! :)

  94. sally:

    Hello Snow!

Gee, just when I gotta go to sleep. I was wondering where you were tonight. Happy Thanksgiving Eve!

  95. stateworker:

anklebiters: Not sure if you are up to golfing with a lurker, but got an opening on Friday 7:10 am at Ko Olina if you are interested. If you are get my e-mail from Shauna and we can hook up hopefully,

  96. BananaFysh:

    Good Evening Hive!

I wanted to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving BEEfore I FAAK. ;)

Oh yeah, Happy Birfday to NKHEA as well! :D

  97. Shauna:

stateworker: Welcome to O&E! I'll pass your e-mail on to anklebiters!

    Good night all!

  101. Ocean Lover:

    Happy Birthday you QUEEA!

    Happy Thanksgiving Hive!

I feel like Ynaku. Its 4 someting in the morning.

Have you ever had one of those VIVID DREAMS? The kind that seemed so REAL that you felt you were in a situation where you had to FIGHT your way out? I get those ever now and then. A little while ago I was sound asleep and all of a sudden a PUNK from my childhood entered my consciousness. He started picking on me and challenged me to a fight. Well I had had enough of his bullying so went "outside" to fight him.

I started POUNDING HIM as I was sick and tired of him bullying me. He kept laughing and dodging my blows. I was really gonna blast him then all of a sudden I was woken up from my battle royale by the sounds of

    "STOP HITTING ME! :-( :-( :-(

Now both me and Da Wife are awake as she's watching some QVC channel.

OL................I only had pizza last night

  102. Ynaku:

    Good Morning.

Breakfast pau. Fried rice and Vienna Sausage omelet. Priority first. EAT :P

Hey OL, hope that wasn't your wife you was hitting 8O

  103. M:

Good morning OL, Ynaku and da Hive!

Wishing da hive a very HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!!!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY NKHEA!

I'm afraid I won't be able to make that tee time...too early for me...thanks for the offer. My brother and I will be golfing somewhere in Ewa Friday, a little later tee time. I wanted to golf at Koo'lau, it owes me a decent round :!: but it looks like rain there so that was nixed. If anyone is interested, I think it's just he and I. Post here if you are.
