Ruffling some feathers

November 24th, 2009 by Shauna

As part of my job I have to edit countless stores about City Council hearings or those testifying before our lawmakers. Many of those meetings can be rather boring, but it’s an important part of the legal process.

Too bad characters like these don’t make an appearance more often to lighten the mood and make my headlines more buzzworthy...

Person in chicken suit ruffles feathers in Colorado
Associated Press

DURANGO, Colo. — A person in a chicken costume ruffled the feathers of Durango’s city council as its members discussed rules for backyard fowl.

At a council meeting last week, someone in a chicken costume quietly entered the council chambers just as the mayor was discussing a recently passed backyard hen ordinance.

The costumed chicken took a few turns, flapped its arms, then took a seat in the nearly empty gallery.

Several minutes later, the big bird left — without identifying itself — after laying an egg on the floor.

Council members told The Durango Herald they were perplexed by the costumed chicken but found the visit humorous. The council voted 3-2 earlier this month to make it easier to keep backyard chickens.

On a serious note, do you ever testify at hearings or show up just to be a well-informed citizen? Are you guilty of complaining of policies after the fact even though you could have made your voice heard?

What ODD characters have you seen show up at public events?

Must be delirious from not enough sleep......

    Good Night.......

  3. jack:

    8)

  4. sally:

    Fort!

    Good Early Morning!

@BH808: My ex husb's slippas was size 13. My friend's slippas is size 13. My friend's son? 13. I stop now, cuz you might BEE getting slippa envy. ha! nah, j/k

(can use those slippas for paddles!)

  5. Ocean Lover:

    Good Morning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Political Weirdness is the topic????????????

    Must BEE slow. ;-)

    OL.............gotta make coffee

  6. Ynaku:

Good Morning. How come we talking about slippahs?

What goes on at the County Council meetings. When some of our politicians were seen giving the "Hawaiian Salute" Throwing pens. Using racial slurs......

Yet, those are our elected officials that set a fine example for our younger generations. I think many of them have their head up where the sun don't shine. :P

  7. teejay:

    Morning all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. sally:

Ynaku: yesterday, BBH808 had shmall kine shame about "small" ... so I told him "don't BEE ashamed of your small... rubbah slippahs."

    BBH808 BEE walking tall today.

QB: Good Morning! *is she up yet?*
Luv the skeletal pic. Should make wallet sized photos of it to hand it out as needed . No words necessary. Hopefully don't need to use it too often. Ha!

  9. matt:

    morning...should I go there? maybe....maybe not...ok
based on the hip size in that skeleton, I'm guessing that it was female (yeah, I went there).

  10. sally:

On Topic: Shauna, I haven't personally witnessed ODD courtroom BEEhavior but once, when my ex husb went to contest a ticket, the guy BEEfore him ...picture this: dressed like Exidor from Mork and Mindy... the judge asked him if he had anything to say about why he went the wrong way on a one way street. He answered "God made me do it".

    oy

  11. Shauna:

    Morning!!

    Creative: Woo-hoo! #1!!! :D

Ocean Lover: There are probably lots of ODD stories coming out of politics!!

sally: Um....Mork and Mindy??? Exidor??????? Remember, this is not MLC or MLC2!

matt: You did not go there!! Some men have small hips (and small other things as bamboohouse808 would know!)

  12. sally:

@Shauna: I know, sorry... but it was still too funny as heck and it was as close a description as I could get to give you guys a visual.

I sense a Finger of Shame Award coming. : (

    matt went WHERE?

I might not get the Finger of Shame after all.

  13. M:

Good morning sally, OL, Ynaku, teejay, matt, Shauna and hive!

  14. Ynaku:

Um exsqueeze me. I think what matt was referring to is that the skeleton hip area reflects the WIDE birth channel. So unless MEN can give birth to children (SHIMS no count) dat pic is of a WOman.

Gotta go. last day beefore vacation.

  15. matt:

    Sally, no FoS for me.
QB, actually, the opposite. female mamalian anatomy is characterized by a larger width to length ratio than male anatomy. I believe the scientific term is "Birthin' hips" (correctly pronounced with two syllables in "hips" like "hi-yups"). alternatively, they can be referred to as "Chaaahld bearin' hi-yups"

  16. sally:

matt: and I can hear you clearly! hahaha

I'm pau playing for now, see y'all tooni-yite.

    Have a good one!

  17. KAN:

    Guuuuud morning Hive!

I'm not gonna go there. I'm too sleepy.

  18. Ukuhead:

    Good morning... Just checking in...

  19. Ocean Lover:

Eh.........try look at the skeleton picture. Looks like MICKEY MOUSE with a lil MICKEY MOUSE inside! Or it could BEE MIGHTY MOUSE?

And I agree dat skeleton is of a woman........a BEEg woman. Notice the wide hippage and long femur bone.

    OL...............sees MICKEY in da pickey

  20. King Katonk:

    Greetings QB & Hive...

I am actually one of those ODD folks who enjoy attending city council meetings. When I can’t make it in person, I will watch a rerun of the session on public access t.v. Since I live in a small city in L.A. County I find it fascinating to watch the political process in action. I also work in commercial real estate so I have a vested interest to stay abreast of developments. See what fun you will have to when you reach MLC?

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to put on my chicken suit.

Here is another ODD story regarding the L.A. City Council.

    http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2009/07/la-council-adjourns-rather-than-hear-from-man-in-kkk-robe-may-seek-tighter-limits-on-speakers.html

  21. Ocean Lover:

    And ON TOPIC................ ;-)

Talk about ODD............this is a pic of characters in local politics:

    http://www.kauaiworld.com/articles/2004/03/20/news/news02.txt

Once I was at the Legislature and she got on the crowded elevator. As she left on the ground floor and we continued in the elevator this guy in the elevator says "Is it still HALLOWEEN or what?"

I have NO IDEA why she makes herself up like that YEAR ROUND and she's looked like that for YEARS now.

    OL............can stay on topic...........sometimes

  22. turk fontaine:

Sometimes the craziest people are sitting on the council bench, not testifying in front of it. Rod, are you awake?

  23. Scott:

If Rod Tam said "wetback" in King Katonk's part of the world, he'd be sleeping six feet under the ground very shortly.
I never went to testify, but I did talk to Calvin Say once while doing yard work one Saturday. I was in his district and he was pounding the pavement before election time a few years ago. I forget what we talked about. It wasn't politics, I do know that. Nice guy he is.

  24. buddahbelly:

Sure gotta get up early to post on this site. By and large the council members in Honolulu are fairly dilligent in their conduct. But I'll tell you, there are a few members from years past who aptly fit the picture.

  25. Ukuhead:

Shauna: Were you da potagee copy editor who worked on today's obits??? Trawick DVM (veterinarian) is listed between Domingo and Fernandez...

  26. Eli:

    Good morning and happy Tuesday!!

I'm not a well informed citizen. The only time I know what is happening in the city is when they mail the city newspaper.

Some ODD characters that I have seen at the Staples Center:
There is this ODD guy who starts dancing during the timeouts at some of games I have attended. I've seen him wear the oversized Mickey Mouse gloves, or a hat with the finding nemo fish on top, or the joker hat with the bells on it.

At the Clippers game there is a harcore Clipper fan who is always wearing a bright red suit. He sits near the court and even though I'm sitting in the nose bleed sections I can still hear him yelling out "lets go Clippers lets go."

I can't forget about the ODD drunk Dodger fans starting fights. Gotta love them Dodger fans. :P

  27. Shauna:

buddahbelly: Growing up I was never interested in politics but now I find it fascinating. I love to hear the BEEhind-the-scene stories from my real-life politician friend. Very interesting. It's also amazing to see how everything is so interconnected...

King Katonk: As you can tell, I don't find it very ODD at all. Granted I don't watch any of the replays on TV. I'm sure if I found the channel and nothing else was on I would watch. ;) Plus, as you said, you do have a vested interest. I wanna see your chicken suit!! :D

Ocean Lover: I remember someone showing me that photo BEEfore but can't remember who or why... Why didn't you BEE nice and say something like, "Your hair looks really nice today..."

  28. Shauna:

Ukuhead: Nope, wasn't me. Only online mistakes for me. ;)

Scott: Nice to know your area politician is a nice guy! I notice on the Mainland people seem to BEE more into politics. Or they tend to show up at public rallies, etc.

turk fontiane: Are you talking about our MLC Rod? ;)

  29. Creative:

Once upon a time when I used to live with my parents, there was a Hawaii State Senator who started off with humble beginnings, but then became too big for his britches. One day when a vote for an important issue came up, my dad and I called him up and urged him not to vote a certain way because it was wrong, but he refused, so we told him that we would be unable to support him with our votes anymore. The next election, he was voted out of office. :)

  30. bamboohouse808:

    Good Morning All!!

How come we talking about rubbah slippahs?

I was in Vegas when OJ got arrested for stealing back his memorabilia from some guy at a hotel. When he made his first court appearance, the media was all over the outside of the courthouse. Had one guy there wearing a chicken suit walking in front of the cameras. He was holding a funny sign, but I forget what it said.

  31. anklebiters:

Shauna, Rodney, Lance - I'm right across the street from you. :!:

  32. David In Oregon:

OL: You should have corrected that guy in the elevator. You should have said no, it wasn't Halloween, and didn't he recognize Tammy Faye Bakker?

  33. Shauna:

anklebiters: Are you stalking us? Haha! Kidding! You can't BEE at the bar?!?

bamboohouse808: Was that guy really in a chicken suit or is your memory a bit foggy?

Creative: Serves him right!! Wonder if it is who I think it is. I remember interviewing a senator once as a lowly intern and he was not very nice!

Eli: Oh yeah, there are probably all kinds of ODD characters at sports games. But that makes it pretty fun!! See, it pays to BEE ODD. That's the only way you stand out or get your 15 minutes of fame! ;)

  34. anklebiters:

    Shauna:

How did you guess. :!: last call was a couple of hours ago. I'm in the bldg Kabuki restaurant is in.

  35. matt:

I've always thought that elected officials weren't necessarily the "best and the brightest". if you think about it, what would motivate one to get into politics? power, altruism, ego? all three can be satisfied in the private sector, to varying degrees, but on the power side, it's probably moreso in the private sector. ditto for money, if that motivates the person. if the elected officials were truly the best of the best, wouldn't they be running microsoft instead of being a senator or representative? what you're left with is the ones with huge ego trips who love to see their names in the headlines as well as the ones who might rise to mid level management or junior partner if they stayed in the private sector.
even if you consider public sector jobs, isn't the real power wielded behind the scenes? if the elected official were really the smartest and brightest, wouldn't s/he be part of the illuminati rather than the figurehead?

  36. Kage:

    Good Morning All!

Fun conversations, but busy day today.

Just stop by to say HI.

  37. King Katonk:

    @Eli,
I’ve been to a few Laker games at the Staples Center and I know who you’re talking about. This guy just wants his 2 seconds of fame on the Jumbotron, but notice how they never put him on. Even the cameramen know he tries too hard and is way over the top…as in obnoxious.

    @Shauna,
Just wait until I fight for an operating permit for the first “El Pollo Loco” restaurant in Hawai’i. Then you’ll really witness the “Crazy Chicken Dance.”

  38. snow:

    good morning HIVE!

i only go to hearings if i HAVE to. sorry, but some of our elected officials aren't to bright and they drive me crazy! "can you please ask that same question 10 more times? pretty please????" i wouldn't mind if the chicken had interrupted some of those i'd been to! and don't even get me started on board of education meetings! i don't believe the people really know who they are voting for... if they ever saw them in action, they'd never vote for them again!

bamboohouse808 - i hope you weren't trying to impress us with your size 10 rubber slippers. my mom wears that size, too.

  39. King Katonk:

    @matt
Howzit up in NoCal? Good comments on your post. I truly respect those folks who serve on the local level. For the most part, they are definitely not doing it for the money or fame. I truly respect them for their commitment to the community.

Sadly, once they ascend the political ladder it becomes another story. When labor unions, lobbyists, and PACs get involved these so-called honorable officials fall victim to power and corruption.

It’s like the old saying about sausage and politics – it is better not to see them being made.

  40. Ynaku:

Hey ankles, you going bee able to meet up Saturday night? NKHEA trying to set something up.

Hey hive, if we meet, NKHEA need tentative headcount. Looking at Kaimuki Grill about 6 pm.

  41. M:

Count masako and I in for Kaimuki Grill. :)

  42. midori-mm:

I don't normally attend hearings but, years ago, I did monitor Senate hearings as a volunteer for Common Cause Hawaii. We were there to see that people who testified were treated politely and fairly. The people I saw testifying were usually well behaved. I don't want to name names but there were a couple of senators whose attitudes bothered me. I don't think some of them were even listening to the testimonies. I better stop here before I get myself into trouble.

  43. snow:

omg... i read midori-mm's comment and it conjured up a bad memory of sitting at a hearing, watching one of our state senator's PICK HIS TEETH with his fingernail, then throw whatever food particle on the ground! it was so gross!! mind you, he was talking at the same time!

ynaku - shucks, i can't make it on saturday... have to go to a funeral. :(

  44. matt:

KK, nice and sunny today. hope it holds through the weekend.
used to have an el pollo loco out by pearlridge back in the 80's. not sure when it went away. I'd just be happy if you started one up here in the bay area. good stuff.

SNOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.............what's this Senator's last name rhyme with? ;-)

    Rod.....what's wrong with "stor" "e"'s?

    Queenie spells......like how she RHYMES. ;-) ;-)

    OL............couldn't resist

  47. midori-mm:

    snow: YUCKY!!!

  48. anklebiters:

    yanaku:

You can count me in.....I need directions thou.....

  49. midori-mm:

But, the senator who really got my goat (so to speak) was a chain smoker and he kept walking in and out of the hearing room. He did this habitually at every hearing that I monitored. Years later, he got caught on a DUI and is no longer in the Senate.

  50. anklebiters:

You do know that there is a football game that evening :?: Is KG a football game hangout :?:

  54. BananaFysh:

    Good Afternoon Hive!

    Sorry, BEEn BEEzy lately.

Bummed that I missed last week's party. :( Airfare was kinda expensive.

If only the SuperFairy was still running! ;)

  55. midori-mm:

EMM386: enjoyed your music contribution.

  56. BananaFysh:

I try not to go to Council meetings as much as possible. Too many giant egos running rampant, lots of chest-pounding and bravado as well. :|

I like to know the issues going on, but a few of the meetings devolve into name calling and seeing who can yell the loudest.

I agree with snow that a LOT of the politicians are not very bright. Uh, how many times are you going to ask the same question? I know you phrased it a little different this time, but you just asked the SAME THING!!!! :x

Oh well, I guess that's just the way it is..... :|

  57. KAN:

    Banana in da house!

I must admit I thought about you this morning when I read this entry from the Seattle 911 police blog:

"Biting, hair pulling, banana throwing and more in Bellevue

The Bellevue Police Department has issued its roundup of incidents, causing us to wonder whether there is a full moon.

There is a mother-daughter argument, in which the younger bit the elder on the shoulder and pulled her hair. That happened Nov. 14 in the 10500 block of Northeast 32nd Place.

On Saturday, a man got punched in the Red Lion Hotel in the 11200 block of Main Street.

And a fist was also thrown Saturday in the 3200 block of 156th Avenue South. But first, the victim was hit in the face by a thrown banana. The attacker apparently didn't know that soft fruits don't pack much punch but fists do.

That leads us to Sunday, when a man disrupted an open house in the 100 block of 152nd Place Northeast by yelling at potential buyers and calling them names."

Aigoo. Stupid criminals are sadly not limited to Florida.

  58. BananaFysh:

    @KAN -- :shock:

If someone threw me into someone's face, there might BEE some damage done there. ;)

But more often than not, the person who got me thrown at them would consider themselves lucky.

I hope it wasn't the "ninja" guy who got impaled on the fence last week!
Hm, do I need to trademark "Banana shuriken?" ;)

  59. matt:

    @BF,
i read your post quickly and thought you said that you have a shrunken banana

  60. BananaFysh:

@matt -- Only when the water is really cold.

  61. David In Oregon:

matt: fist bump on that one.

  62. Shauna:

Ack! So busy busy! Now it's time to go golfing!!! MayBEE I'll see some of you there! :D

  63. Kage:

    Shrunken Banana - - HAHAHAHAAHAA

  64. jack:

    Mornin' Hive 8)

I am about to have my first Hanks Haute dog. :D Sorry I won't BEE able to play golf today, I will try my best to make it for the 19th hole.

  65. snow:

matt & bananafysh - i read it as "banana shrunken" too. ha ha ha... uhhh, i think i can do without my usual mind visuals for this one!

*don't want to see any really cold bananans! *

  66. snow:

OL - since you asked the name, i can't remember it! it was the short, japanese, side-combed dirty looking salt and pepper hair, mumbling (even when he wasn't picking his TEET!) senator. i'll let you know if i remember!

  67. snow:

darn, typo... that should have said bananas, not bananans! :?

  68. David In Oregon:

snow: blame bananans on trauma over the thought of shrunken bananas

  69. Kage:

    @snow- bananans=citizens of Bananaville?

  70. David In Oregon:

Kage:  and BF is their leader

  71. Ukuhead:

Snow: he was an a$$hole when he came to our place for meetings...

Plus he's one if a bunch of politicians that cheats at golf...

  72. BananaFysh:

Hey! I said it was COLD!

I'm the leader of Bananaville? :)

Is it some Banana Republic? ;)

I was elected BEEcause I have a lot of a-peel.
    *rimshot*

  76. Kage:

  77. Ynaku:

BTW, can you also stop by and see Rodney tomorrow after lunch. Have something for you too but you gotta get it. Might not last till Saturday. Sorry, I don't have your number.

Ynaku.............gotta finish up all his paperwork before he leaves for vacation :P

  78. Ynaku:

BF start rowing. You should be there by Saturday. Or watch for the dangling rope as we fly over Maui about 9:30 tomorrow morning. Try grab em as we pass.

  79. BananaFysh:

    @Kage -- ;)

@Ynaku -- I'll have my minions start rowing, as I am their leader. I steer, not row. ;)

Either that, or I go send a BEEg balloon up on a string, and you go have the pilot run into um and carry me up, like on The Dark Knight. :D

  80. KAN:

It's as if I had no shame!

Bf, why are you making it sound as though you're positing a hypothetical? (j/k).

  81. BananaFysh:

@KAN -- I should BEE allowed to pretend once in a while. ;)

  82. NKHEA:

NKHEA..... goin work now :( see ya all Saturday :D

  83. anklebiters:

I am BEET :!: I'm glad we only played 9 holes.....I would have never made it the full 18. An MLC reality check - I'm not as good as I use to bee, not that I was to begin with :-) . It was kite flying weather out there today but it was nice to be golfing no matter what. Opso, Shauna and I teed off at 3pm. They wouldn't let us off earlier...we sure didn't see a line of golfers waiting to tee off. We were behind a single and he was long gone after several holes. Our Triad tournaments should be 9 holes only so we have more time to pah-tay afterwards :!:

Jack met us at The Therapy. We sure needed therapy after golf :!: Thanks Jack for the fuud :!: For desert, we stopped by Bubbles for ice cream, mochi ice cream and ice cream cake.

Now waiting for Saturday and Ynaku at KG.

  84. Rodney Lee:

The Therapy?!? Did you get the garlic chicken?

  85. anklebiters:

  89. snow:

ankles - i thought you wanted to make banana slush! ha ha!

kage & DiO - i don't think i want to know who the bananans are! citizens of bananaville and bananafysh is their leader? aigoooo!!

  90. snow:

ukuhead - he was an a$$hole every time i saw him! ick!!!!! he grossed me out... but, to be fair, he wasn't the only one!

*"most disgusting politician" award goes to the slimy new-agey icky one who condescendingly patted me on the shoulder and told me "no need to read the laws, just give us the money." gag me... pu-leeeeez! *

  91. Ynaku:
