Call me Stella or call me smart...

November 13th, 2009 by Shauna

There's no story today, but just some hilarious, ODD and true tales.

For those  unfamiliar with the "Stella Awards," they are named after 81-year-old Stella Liebeck who spilled hot coffee on herself and successfully sued the McDonald's in New Mexico, where she purchased coffee. You remember, she took the lid off the coffee and put it between her knees while she was driving. Who would ever think one could get  burned doing that, right? That's right — these are awards for the most outlandish lawsuits and verdicts in the U.S. You know, the kinds of cases that make you scratch your head. So keep your head-scratcher handy....

Here are the "Stellas" for 2009. However, some quick research shows that some of these cases were fabricated. Take a guess on which ones were true and which ones were made up!

Case 1:

Kathleen Robertson of Austin, Texas was awarded $80,000 by a jury of her peers after breaking her ankle tripping over a toddler who was running inside a furniture store. The store owners were understandably surprised by the verdict, considering the running toddler was her own son.

Case 2:

Carl Truman, 19, of Los Angeles, Calif., won $74,000 plus medical expenses when his neighbor ran over his hand with a Honda Accord. Truman apparently didn't notice there was someone at the wheel of the car when he was trying to steal his neighbor's hubcaps.

Case 3:

Terrence Dickson, of Bristol, Penn., was leaving a house he had just burglarized by way of the garage Unfortunately for Dickson, the automatic garage door opener malfunctioned and he could not get the garage door to open. Worse, he couldn't re-enter the house because the door connecting the garage to the house locked when Dickson pulled it shut. Forced to sit for eight, count 'em, EIGHT days and survive on a case of Pepsi and a large bag of dry dog food, he sued the homeowner's insurance company claiming undue mental Anguish. Amazingly, the jury said the insurance company must pay Dickson $500,000 for his anguish.

Case 4:

A jury ordered a Philadelphia restaurant to pay Amber Carson of Lancaster, Penn., $113,500 after she slipped on a spilled soft drink and broke her tailbone. The reason the soft drink was on the floor: Carson had thrown it at her boyfriend 30 seconds earlier during an argument.

Case 5:

Merv Grazinski, of Oklahoma City, Okla., had purchased a new 32-foot Winnebago motor home. On her first trip home, from an OU football game, having driven on to the freeway, she set the cruise control at 70 mph and calmly left the driver's seat to go to the back of the Winnebago to make herself a sandwich. Not surprisingly, the motor home left the freeway, crashed and overturned. Also not surprisingly, Grazinski sued Winnebago for not putting in the owner's manual that she couldn't actually leave the driver's seat while the cruise control was set. The Oklahoma jury awarded her $1,750,000 PLUS a new motor home. Winnebago actually changed their manuals as a result of this suit, just in case Grazinski has any relatives who might also buy a motor home.

-----

So what real-life frivolous lawsuits have you heard of? Or more importantly, how can you get rich suing someone by spinning a story in your favor?

And on a serious note, is money really the answer to everything? Can it really make up for the emotional pain, mental anguish or that broken tailbone? Or does it just psychologically make you feel better?

  2. David In Oregon:

I think OL needs to look into filing a lawsuit against weirdo, for emotional anguish.

  3. The Dork Knight:

    WTF?
oh sorry, that was yesterday's blog.

This only proves that there's no shortage of stoopid people nor the greedy lawyers willing to represent them.

    Happy Friday the 13th!

  4. teejay:

  6. David In Oregon:

  7. David In Oregon:

OL: you have to find a lawyer experienced in fighting cases involving BLATT BLATT OTOOOTT, then you can sue, and hopefully retire as Ocean Lover 24/7

  8. Shauna:

Good morning and Happy Friday the 13th!! :D

  9. KAN:

Guuuud morning Hive! Happy Friday da 13th! Fri. 13th is always a good luck day for me (unless it's not) because I lurrrrve the # 13. QB, howzabout you?

I would guess case number 1 and 4 are true. Aisus if all five are. I would say, minus the supposed monetary awards, that all five are illustrations of big bachi in action.

  10. sally:

OL: you have lots of documentation on WEIRDO already, just go into O&E history. PLUS!... you have all our sympathetic reactions. I'm sure Shauna can delete the "unsympathetic" ones.

    oh... sorry... GOOD MORNING HIVE!

  11. M:

Good moorning David in Oregon, The Dork Knight, teejay, OL, KAN and da hive! :)

    Happy Friday! :)

    Breakfast Friday! :)

  12. sally:

Being involved in a case right now, I can say that I am not looking at getting near as much as Ms Coffee Spiller nor Mr Hubcap Stealer nor Mr DogChow w/Pepsi chaser eater. Where's the justice here?

It's not so much about the money (altho' honestly it will help a little), it's more about proving that I...ME...SALLY... was NOT intentionally malicious and responsible. Ironically, the other affected parties involved have backed me up.

But my case IS valid and hopefully soon pau. Now I understand how these big crimes take yearrrrs to resolve, if mine has been already 2 yrs.

MayBEE I should have added emotional anguish for dragging me thru this sh.... stuff for so long! ay sus.

btw... Need a personal injury atty? I got the best! Seriously, he kicks butt. Not just that he's my friend, but he does.

  13. che:

    Good morning.

Shauna so where is that place in the picture?

  15. M:

  16. jaydee:

    Morning everyone!!

Wow, nice pic in Metromix Shauna! :)

Woman slips on strawberry, gets $21,000
    By JEFF OVERLEY
    2009-11-11 08:40:28
NEWPORT BEACH – A woman who was injured after slipping on a piece of strawberry was one of several Newport-Mesa Unified School District employees to receive thousands of dollars in compensation recently.

Board officials at a recent meeting approved settlements in four slip-and-fall cases. Here's a look:

•A 58-year-old instructional aide in 2004 suffered a shoulder injury after tripping over a chair. The next year, she slipped on a piece of strawberry and hurt her right arm. District officials on Oct. 27 agreed to pay her $21,000.

•A 66-year-old teacher injured her right foot, ankles, knees, right thigh, right wrist, right arm, left wrist, back, neck, nose, right eye and head in two slip-and-fall accidents. One involved a cracked sidewalk, and the other involved tripping over a plastic floor mat. Trustees gave her $60,222.50.

•A 38-year-old teacher suffered back, head and thigh injuries after slipping on food on a floor. She received $15,510.

•A 75-year-old nutritional assistant fell in a lunch room and injured her left arm. She was given $6,099.63.

  17. KAN:

Sally, I'm not saying your attorney isn't good - I'm sure he is. But it's a funny thing about the general public's perception of attorneys - people think attorneys are shysters and dishonest EXCEPT for their particular attorney - their own attorney is always the one honest attorney in town.

  18. Ocean Lover:

    Good Morning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (again) ;-)

Eh Queenie.....who da guy in da middle....Lyle Galdeira?

And today's Friday da 13th? I better go tell Da Wife.....she gets all STRESSED OUT about dat kine stuff. ;-)

I think I'll lean back on my chair...............LEAN WAY BACK........."CRASH!"

    OL..........gonna make $millions$

  19. Jack:

    8) Mornin'

  20. M:

Good morning che, sally, jaydee and Jack!

  21. matt:

happy friday the 13th. there's a reason lawn mower manuals say something to the effect of "for use on ground only".

  22. matt:

I guess the plaintiffs have always depended on the kindness of strangers

  23. Jack:

Shauna: WOW you woke up early today…..or you had too much ice cream and never go sleep yet.

On topic- I would rather be flat broke and healthy than a millionaire paraplegic.

  24. NKHEA:

    Mornin everybody :)

    Jack; 8O

NKHEA.....hi ho hi ho its off to work I go........

  25. Ocean Lover:

"NKHEA.....hi ho hi ho its off to work I go........"

Eh NKHEA......you QUEEA.........AND you one "DWARF" also? ;-)

OL.................the young buggahs not going understand..........

  26. jaydee:

    M: What's for breakfast brah?!!

  27. jaydee:

I just had mine....a chorizo and egg burrito. It's actually one of the best things they serve in the cafeteria; only on Fridays though.

  28. Ukuhead:

    Good morning!!!

Needing to lose some pounds so no fried rice today.

I've been seeing a lot more floaters since I switched to a high fiber diet

  29. Jack:

All this breakfast talk is making me hungry; I only had a pudding cup.

  30. M:

@jaydee, this mornings breakfast was omelette, fried rice and spam.

  31. Kage:

    Good Morning All!

It is a good thing I was not on those juries. "You stoopid. You no get paid for BEEing stoopid."

Since we talking about breakfast... I had a cinnamon roll from the cafeteria. I know, it is not a good thing for breakfast. It was actually my morning snack after the traffic. Paired with a nice hot cup of coffee and I am all guuud.

  32. matt:

you know, when you have a jury trial, who are you most likely to get? the people with jobs are likely to try to get out of serving, so you might have only a smattering of them on it. the ones running the companies are likely to have some pull, so you probably can't count on any captains of industry sitting on a jury. the ones who are out of work/likely want to stick it to the man? I'm guessing they have little incentive and fewer believable excuses to get off serving. if you have a case of a little guy (or gal) suing a big corporation, who do you think the jury will be more sympathetic towards?

  33. snow:

    good morning HIVE!

those injury claims... i dunno, all of them sound stupid enough to be real!

qb - yay! you made metromix! someone in that picture (besides you), looks familiar... can't place where i've seen that girl on the left!

ukuhead - i didn't know a high fiber diet affects your eyesight... and you just had laser and den!

  34. Eli:

Good morning and happy Friday the 13th!!

    I think #4 and 5 are true.

Money will help with the medical expenses but it isn't the answer to everything. It won't take away the physical pain you might feel every morning or the emotional pain you have to deal with the rest of your life.

Nice picture on Metromix Shauna!! :D

  35. bamboohouse808:

    Good Morning All!!

I think #5 bee real. I can see women drivers confusing "cruise control" with "auto-pilot"

  36. Ynaku:

    Ice Cream and Beea :P

    Blaaat Blaaat Ottoooot

    Hey Shauna, you speshul now.

as for STELLA!!!!!!, we have a stoopid system.

  37. Shauna:

Anyone got lucky yet today? I momentarily lost my work ID and was like $hit! (Oops, that was yesterday's blog! ;) ) I started thinking, drat, Friday the 13th is supposed to BEE my day! After backtracking and not finding it. I figured I would just ask security. Some other workers then told me that they found it and guess whose desk it ended up BEEing at? Braddah Lance!! What are the ODDS?

  38. Kage:

Shauna - BL had your ID... hmmmm. Did you lose it, or did he take it?

  39. Shauna:

Kage: He took it cause I lost it.

David In Oregon: Yeah, if Ocean Lover finds the right lawyer, I'm sure he has a case! ;)

The Dork Knight: Couldn't have said it better myself:

This only proves that there's no shortage of stoopid people nor the greedy lawyers willing to represent them.

teejay: What has this world come to when it's a coup to make Metormix??

David In Oregon: How ODD you recognized a classmate!!

Ocean Lover: No, that's not Lyle...he could BEE one of us, or mayBEE not...

M: Not sure who you think that may BEE but ssshhh... ;)

snow: Wonder where you've seen that girl on the left BEEfore...

Jack: Got up early AND went to the gym! Woo-hoo! Now I'm eating a long chocolate thick-looking log treat... It kinda looks like a cigar.

  40. Shauna:

KAN: I love the 13ths like you!!! But if I did lose my badge this morning, I might have thought twice about how lucky this day really is for me... And you got one of your answers right!! #1 is TRUE!

    sally: Haha, love those names:

Ms Coffee Spiller nor Mr Hubcap Stealer nor Mr DogChow w/Pepsi chaser eater...

jaydee: What a timely Stella story you found!! Love the one about the person injuring her right foot, ankles, knees, right thigh, right wrist, right arm, left wrist, back, neck, nose, right eye and head! LOL! ODDly enough, I just saw someone slip and fall at the mall cause it was raining. My first thought was, "Wonder if she could sue if she got hurt?" Then I saw that yellow cone sign that said caution, slippery when wet. Is that enough to protect a business???

matt: Do you actually read the lawn mower manuals???

Ocean Lover: Did you tell your wife what day it is yet? Did you fall off your chair in your attempt to lean way back? And did you know that I got the hi ho hi ho dwarf reference?? :D

  41. Ocean Lover:

Queenie: "Anyone got lucky yet today?"

    Crossing da fingahs................. ;-)

"Did you tell your wife what day it is yet?"

    No.....I forgot. :-(

" Did you fall off your chair in your attempt to lean way back?"
    No......me too chicken.

" And did you know that I got the hi ho hi ho dwarf reference??"

    Ho...you OLD yeah? ;-)

OL........impressed that Queenie knows about "Hi ho, hi ho....its off to work I go" :-)

  42. Ocean Lover:

I just saw a story about some dead body by Punchbowl and Beretania that was found in the bushes. I'm gonna WALK PAST THERE very shortly. Shall I go rummage in the bushes to see if got any valuables?

    OL.................going "Ewwwwwwwwwwwwww" at the thought

  43. David In Oregon:

Eh OL: Which dwarf is NKHEA?

  44. matt:

nah, we use that example (guy deciding to trim his hedges with his lawnmower) in training about following SOP.
=( no one either got or liked the streetcar reference.

  45. Shauna:

Eli: Got both guesses wrong!! Sorry! Try again! It's 50/50 you'll get it right!

che: Picture was at Oceans808 anniversary event.

sally: Click on the Metromix link above the picture. It will take you to the rest of the gallery...

    Ukuhead: Floaters!

    snow: Fist bump!

ukuhead - i didn't know a high fiber diet affects your eyesight... and you just had laser and den!

matt: As usual, you brought up an interesting perspective that never even crossed my mind. That makes a lot of sense!

you know, when you have a jury trial, who are you most likely to get? the people with jobs are likely to try to get out of serving, so you might have only a smattering of them on it. the ones running the companies are likely to have some pull, so you probably can't count on any captains of industry sitting on a jury. the ones who are out of work/likely want to stick it to the man? I'm guessing they have little incentive and fewer believable excuses to get off serving. if you have a case of a little guy (or gal) suing a big corporation, who do you think the jury will be more sympathetic towards?

  46. anklebiters:

My friend's BD today...not only on the 13th but Friday the 13th :!:

Q: How can you tell when a lawyer is lying :?:

A: Their lips are moving

Metromix finally put in a requirement that a person's head must be tilted to be eligible for their photo. :-)

  47. Shauna:

bamboohouse808: As much as your misconceptions about women and driving cloud your judgment, your best guess at #5 is wrong. FAIL(URE)! ;)

Ocean Lover: Do it, do it! You seem to get lucky with bushes!!! Hi ho, hi ho!! :D

matt: Yeah, I didn't get any street-car reference...

David In Oregon: I know I'm the Grumpy dwarf!! ;)

  48. Shauna:

anklebiters: Haha, funny joke! And dang it, my head is not tilted enough!

The Dork Knight: Oh yeah, WTF is mild compared to what the other BEES were trying to say yesterday! ;) They were so explicit!

  49. matt:

sorry. was in kind of an "out-there" mood this morning (as usual, I guess). I was just riffing off of the blog title this AM.
    I wrote:
"I guess the plaintiffs have always depended on the kindness of strangers"
which is a play on Blanche's famous "I have always depended on the kindness of strangers" as she is admitted to the metal institution.
another famous line from that same movie is "Stellllla! hey, Stellla!" referencing Blanche's sister.

sorry, my mind works in mysterious ways sometimes.

  50. Jack:

I say story 1,2,3,4 and 5 are all made up. :?:

The O&E image of the day, my guess is two Hotties  and one incredibly handsome guy.

  51. visitor:

    Good morning...still barely morning.

I have attorney friends who detest others in their profession who gain publicity with this type of cases. It's all about $$$.

  52. Shauna:

matt: Oh...I didn't see that movie so that's why it went right over my head...

Jack: You're half right! On your Stella guesses that is... Wonder if that handsome guy is now famous. ;)

visitor: It's all about the money money money!!

  53. Shauna:

How's this for a frivolous lawsuit?

Lawsuit: Trip over dog ruined sex life

NEW YORK, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- A New York octogenarian claims in a lawsuit against a bar that his sex life was ruined by an injury suffered when he tripped over a dog at the establishment.

Irving Grossman, 81, said in his suit against the Austin Steak and Ale House he tripped over a Pomeranian on his way out of the business and injured his left kneecap, the New York Daily News reported Thursday.

"I was in a brace for two months," Grossman said.

He said the injury caused him "severe pain, shock, mental anguish" and ruined his sex life with his wife, Jaclyn. The suit accuses the bar of creating a safety hazard by being too "pet-friendly."

However, a manager at the bar who was working April 29, the day Grossman said he injured his knee, said she could not recall any injuries at the bar on that date, the newspaper reported. The manager said the bar follows city laws by not allowing pets but one of the regular customers is visually impaired and brings her seeing-eye dog.

"No one that I know can remember anything," the manager said. "But there is a customer who's handicapped who uses a dog."

  54. anklebiters:

The ONLY winner in a case that involves lawyers are the lawyers themselves. They are usually paid - win, lose or draw :!:

But still I like to watch movies about lawyers - Pelican Brief, The Client, Time To Kill, The Firm, Erin Brockovich (she really does look gr8 IRL :-) ), The Rainmaker.....

  55. Jack:

“his sex life was ruined by an injury suffered when he tripped over a dog at the establishment.”

He is 81years old, I don’t think it was tripping that ruined his sex life.

  56. Eli:

Shauna: The answer is #1 and 2 or #1 and 3. :P Cookie please. :D

  57. Rod's Big Bro:

Attention, Attention in da BEEhive, da Queen Bee isn't doing her trademark "TILT", whoooot, WWD.

@Jack - #23, you are right on the mark, a BeeBeeDee, with common sense. All da cents in da world ain't worth sitting in a wheel chair for the rest of you life.

@Anklebiters - If you happen to see Kyle Busch, can you get me an autograph? Only if you happen to see him.

  58. Shauna:

Jack: His old age also didn't escape me...

Rod's Big Bro: I am so mad I forgot to do it!!

anklebiters: Looks like some of us may want to consider a career change! ;)

Matt, #32: retirees make up a big portion of the jury pool too.

@ankles: why does NY have all the attorneys and NJ has all the toxic waste? NJ got first pick

    What's the difference between a catfish and a lawyer? One's a bottom-dwelling, scum-sucking creature, and the other one's a fish.

The fact that ANY of the stories are true makes me die a little inside. :(

  68. BananaFysh:

@NKHEA -- I thought you were "Alkie Dwarf" or "Drunky Dwarf." ;)

  69. matt:

    @KAN,
I doubt any retirees who end up on juries have much love for big corporations either.

The devil visited a lawyer's office and made him an offer. "I can arrange some things for you, " the devil said. "I'll increase your income five-fold. Your partners will love you; your clients will respect you; you'll have four months of vacation each year and live to be a hundred. All I require in return is that your wife's soul, your children's souls, and their children's souls rot in hell for eternity."

The lawyer thought for a moment. "What's the catch?" he asked.

  70. Ocean Lover:

    NKHEA........you QUEEA.....with the BEEa.......

    I thought I'm "BALDY" not "GRUMPY". ;-)

    OL........correcting NKHEA.........again.

What's the difference between a dead skunk in the middle of the road and a dead lawyer in the middle of the road? There are skid marks before the skunk.

  89. sally:

@visitor: I think every profession has their dogs. I know some dentists that are questionable in their treatment of patients as well as in their own hearts. The good and the okole pukas are in every walk of life. Even receptionists.

Not moi... I kick butt. hahahaha!

whoo boy, time to get going

Have a good remaining Friday the 13th everyone!

  90. KAN:

@ sally: better to be the butt kicker than the butt kickee. :-D

I gotta go and clean house now! Bye!

  91. Scott:

@sally, funny thing, my sister is lawyer and her husband is a dentist. I guess between the two of them, they could really do some damage!

    Scott.....still unemployed.....

But bought a new house today :)

    Don't ask..... :(

  92. anklebiters:

    Gotta start packing........

I keep thinking today is Saturday

  93. Shauna:

Scott: I do want to know about the new house!!

anklebiters: You mean you didn't start packing last week? Tsk tsk!!

KAN: Yes, the butt kicker is the better position to BEE in! :D

  94. turk fontaine:

The best way to extort today is with a workplace lawsuit. A hostile work environment is anything you say it is. You just say it often enough and it begins to sound true. -

Case in point and pending action:

As a long time receptionist at the Honolulu Advertiser, I was shocked and embarrassed by the lack of shoulder coverage during Shauna Goya's recent video headlines piece. I couldn't perform my duties of repeating "He/She's not in", and otherwise stonewalling subscribers who came to, or called the newspaper. I felt depressed and put upon. I lost sleep. I couldn't even eat my usual lunch of three Kobe Dogs from Hank's. The stress was affecting my relationship with my spouse, my children, and most importantly, my dog.

    Anon.

    Dear Anon:

You are not alone. I too lost sleep, had unexplained heart palpitations and night sweats after being exposed to the soft, creamy, luxurious naked shoulders of Ms. Goya. I trust you have communicated your concerns to HR and are awaiting a reply in the form of a munificent settlement.for your anguish and suffering. As for me, I have no such recourse as I am not an employee of the soon to be bankrupt Gannett corporation.

  95. Scott:

Shauna...3156 sq feet. 4 bed 3.5 bath. New home for (only?)...$319,000. The same model sold for $359,000 2 months ago, and some very (very very very very very very) unhappy neighbors paid $479,000 last year for the same model house. I've beeen doing my research on this area for about 2 years and finally pounced today. We're pretty excited. I think I done guud.

Scott.....has many bedrooms and bathrooms empty for Hive members to visit No. Cal. :)

  96. KAN:

    Congrats Scott!

  97. anklebiters:

    scott:

    You done guud :!:

  98. matt:

right on Scott. that buggah's floor space is almost as big as my whole lot!!

  99. Shauna:

Scott: Congrats!!!! Which room is mine? Glad all your research paid off!!

turk fontaine: Haha!!! Anon is funny!!! What on earth could my defense BEE?? ;)

  100. matt:

what, Shauna, no pahtay tonight? either that or checking up on the hive from a mobile device?

  101. Shauna:

matt: Do I look like a party girl to you? ;)

  102. David In Oregon:

QB: Looks can be deceiving.... ;-)

  103. M:

    Guud job Scott! congrats!

  104. matt:

wasn't there a certain regal head tilt featured on a particular societal webpage?

  105. sally:

Congratulations to Scott the Homeowner! Did you buy the home cash out?

Sally>>>*wondering how a home is sold to an applicant with "employer" section blank*

  106. sally:

Shauna: great Metromix Pics! My friends and I always wonder if we were ever that cute when we were young 'uns.

I wonder if Rod is really gonna do a RetroMix. It's catchy. He should.

    Yah?

  107. sally:

@Scott... sorry, when I read my comment again it sounded kind of invasive. Hope I didn't come across to you that way.

I really am excited for you and your family!

  108. jack:

    Mornin' Hive! 8)

  109. Tahoe-gal:

Yep, there's definitely more bang for the buck on the mainland. Well done!

  110. Scott:

sally, we gotta sell the house in Hawaii in order to puchase this one. That makes me sad, but the house in Palolo is really old and, although we have great tenants, it's only a matter of time before a big repair occurs.

Scott-gonna have to take M off my payroll as official house watcher in Palolo (but not for 1 1/2 years! ) :)

Shauna-there's a nice guest suite on the second story. When my wife's out of town....ha ha, I ain't gonna go there!

Scott-really loves his wife and hope she isn't looking over my shoulder...

  111. sally:

    Good Morning jack & Tahoe-Gal!

No one out to play yet?

  112. Ocean Lover:

Out of 17 kids, when the sign-up sheet was passed around showing the calendar for the tennis matches, by the time we got the sheet EVERYONE SIGNED UP FOR "DRINKS". The column for "SNACKS" was %$#^$@# EMPTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTFWD? (threw that one in for Queenie) ;-)

Kinda makes you pissy as a parent but WHATCHU GONNA DO??????

Everyone got different "value systems" I guess. One thing that I KNOW........the HIVE would ALWAYS COME THROUGH!

OL..........thank goodness for coffee and patience

  113. Ocean Lover:

OL........soon the SPAM musubi assembly line opens

  115. Ocean Lover:

    Oh well............gotta do it.

OL.................no can change weather so no worry bout it

  116. anklebiters:

HO HO HO.....TOPLESS weather :!: Gonna tan my abs ... hope I don't cause any accidents

  117. Ynaku:

    Good Morning.

Sorry OL, I was taking the dog s out to DOO their thing. Then I grabbed the paper while watching my dogs eat their dog food. My Beeg dog no eat unless somebody watching him. But give um one chicken tender jerky, and he gobble that buggah.

Plus was cold and didn't want to get out of bed. Neither did the dogs. I think get snow on the mountain but everything is overcast and looks like might rain again.

Gotta finish my project in the garage quick. Taking up space. Gotta refinish this old dresser my wife got from her friend. The veneers coming apart. Had to glue them back. Now gotta sand em and re-stain it.

But I rather play with you guys today :P

  118. M:

    Good morning hive! :)

It's drizzling here in the valley.

@OL, masako and I made 40 spam musubi's early in the mornings many times for my son's soccer games. I have my son help us too by wrapping up each one in plastic wrap.

  119. jack:

    Mornin' again. 8)

Scott: good job on your new castle.

I am at work at 7am on a Saturday for training. :( At least we got breakfast.

    Jack....hopes participation is minimal

  120. Ocean Lover:

    Good Morning everyone!

    I think the count's at 28 or so...........Da Wife's getting "hot"......not dat kine "hot".......da irras kine hot.

And the weather outside looks "frightening".....shoots, I forget the rest of the lyrics. :-(

OL........gotta get back to da kitchen......OR ELSE

  121. jack:

OL: it's raining in sand island

  122. Ocean Lover:

Howzit Jack! And my apologies......dats YOU in da pic with Shauna and some other lovely.....right?

Yeah, looks like RAIN today and dose buggahs will probably cancel the match. WHOA! I just heard thunder............ :-(

    OL.............."timing" is everything

  123. Ocean Lover:

    Okay................we PAU. Have a good day/weekend everyone!

    OL.......is outta hea!

  124. Tahoe-gal:

Thx Sally, n' a guud-mornin' backatcha! Ho, wish I could stay and play but I haff-to-haff-to get off my duff and accomplish something...anything...ODDa-wise the day just slips away, so I can jes' peek in choto-while.

Wish I could help OL make musubi or any kine snacks cuz' I lurrv to putz around in the kitchen and it's fun to do mega-amounts...no fun when there's just two.

    Math question: 17 kids = 40 musubi = 'snack'?

  125. Shauna:

Good morning!! Got a dentist appointment this morning. Ugh!

jack: Why do you wake up four hours early for your training? Never mind! You probably got home from partying at that time!

Ocean Lover: Ooh, I just lurve Spam musubi!!! Did you put furikake in the rice? Did you make fancy-kine Spam? ;) All those kids are lucky! But I hear what you mean about certain parents always quick to sign up for the easy things. Spread the joy! Have some class! And I think the lyrics you were looking for included lightning or something. Ukuhead used that line the other night when he saw my high BJ score! ;)

Ynaku: Ooh, I need someone to refinish my kitchen and bathroom cabinets. I like my wood all shiny and new! :D

anklebiters: So how many accidents did you cause? Trying to look all nice and tan BEEfore you meet up with The Hive?

sally: You probably were cuter! RetroMix is a great idea for Rodney. Now I gotta think of something more creative! ;)

    M and Tahoe-gal: Morning!!

  126. Shauna:

sally: It's less fun to cook for one! And I think each kid gets 2.0284759606 musubis each. ;) I'm sure matt can tell us the exact portion!

  129. David In Oregon:

Dentist? QB is going to the dentist today? Gee, I hope you don't come out lookin' like BananaFysh!

Ahhh, come home to find playmates in da hive!

Gig at Kapiolani Bandstand for the Juvenille Diabetes Walk, had to be there around 7am. Walked to the park (only about 20min).

9am the sky opened up! Walkers were returning and started dancing in front of the bandstand in the rain! Fun! Not us, we went under the roof while the guys played.

Gig got cut short yayyy! and they even gave us pizza!

I need a nap, running on 2 1/2 hrs sleep.

  138. sally:

Shauna: I haven't bought Spam in the 9yrs I've lived in this apt. I eat an occasional Spam Musubi... I am, after all, a local girl.

When I used to make a lot of Spam Musubi I made it teri spam style and added fresh Fukujinzuke (not canned). Was soooo ono ono!

  139. sally:

Sorry, I'm making up for the lost morning with you folks. ha!

At the park I made friends with about 15 prisoners. hahaha fo' real kine. They were all seated in the front row, so were we in the beginning. They were good fun guys and I was joking with them, not realizing what they were. Then I saw the luna, they guy w/ the blue security uniform with the OCCC patch.

ME: "so what are you guys?"
    Them: "OCCC".
    Me: "How come you here?"
Them: "Community service, we're in transition to Laumaka, almost pau our time"
Me: "And only get one guard?"
    Them: "yah, cuz we good"
Me: "You need help?" (making "Big Body")

    Sally>>>*I don't think I scared them*

  140. KAN:

    (making "Big Body")

Sally, I haven't heard dat for long time! That makes me think of Andy Bumatai, rolling up his shirt from his opu.

BEEzee day today. Kanikapila this morning, then Sweetie and friend had a planning session for an `ukulele workshop they're doing in December. Then I went grocery shopping and exercised, and we're going to a symphony concert tonight. Whew! Thank goodness tomorrow we have nothing on the schedule except sleeping in and watching t.v. (and maybe some laundry).

OL: how many seconds did it take for the 40 musubi to disappear? Good on you and Ocean Hater for taking up the responsibility.

  141. Ocean Lover:

Okay...........back home. Ocean Hater's spam musubi recipe she first bakes the SPAM and tries to sop up as much oil as possible. Then she simmers in shoyu/sugar/garlic. Puts furikake inside also. Pretty yummy if I do say so myself.

Naturally they started the match and about 10 minutes later it RAINED. They have to "make up" the match on Wednesday. Nevertheless they whacked about 34 spam musubi's in about 20 minutes.

And another thing.......the parents that brought drinks today ALSO brought drinks this past Thursday. We brought McDouble hamburgers on Thursday and the musubi's and M & M cookies TODAY.

WHERE THEY HECK are the other parents?????????????????? They no SHAME or what??????????????????????

    OL.......small kine "irras"

  142. Shauna:

sally: Wow, hanging out with prisoners!!

Ocean Lover: So what did you do with the leftover musubis??

teejay, anklebiters, jack: How's the UH game shaping up???

  143. jack:

    1st qtr UH 14. NM 0 and it's cooooold.

  144. teejay:

On a good note, Hawaii is up 14-0 at the end of the first quarter. I they're playing better but this is Hawaii we're talking about. Let's see what happens at the half. (I did that whole post without using the word "sucks". That maybe a record)

  145. teejay:

Greg Salas is an incredible receiver. Nuff said.

  146. teejay:

    UH leads 17-0.

  147. Ocean Lover:

Da Teenager ate a few more musubi's this afternoon and I think there's around 3 in the fridge. Wind's picking up and I think its gonna start raining. :-(

    OL..........good night to STAY HOME

  148. Shauna:

jack: Stay warm and no ice cream for you tonight!!

teejay: Woo-hoo! Game updates! And let's see how long you'll stay positive!

Ocean Lover: So you're going to stay home and do some more cooking? ;)

  149. anklebiters:

    Shauna:

    Watching ASU's game - 14-0 Oregon Ducks

  150. David In Oregon:

Good evening QB and Hive! :-D

  151. anklebiters:

ASU sucks ..... there, said it for teejay

  152. anklebiters:

    14-7 Oregon.....

  153. wade:

Hey...catching the Hawaii game on espn360. Hawaii looking good...17-0. Hawaii ball, 4th and goal at the NM St 5.

  154. anklebiters:

17-7 Oregon - they have the FUGLIEST uniform on the planet :!: feathers on the shoulders

  155. teejay:

ankles: That was a good one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  156. wade:

missed FG. well, it was after all a whopping 23 yard attempt. all sorts of things can affect the flight path...high snap, trajectory angle, wind shear...

  157. teejay:

    wade: Did USC play today?

  158. Shauna:

anklebiters: Why aren't you watching the UH game? Watch the sucky ASU one later!!

wade: Hello there! So cool how you always make it a point to take time out to tune in to the UH game via espn360 and our own O&E commentator teejay! :D

  159. anklebiters:

USC got a WHOOPING today :!: UofA also lost....topsy turvy PAC-10...

  160. anklebiters:

    24-7 Oregon........ASU sucks :!:

  161. Tahoe-gal:

Hooo, long day ~ but not BEEzy like OL and OH...you get good hearts.
We use to do assigned rotation for the grinds. Ya' gotta pipe up or dey are going to keep taking advantage of you guys. They go home with full tummies and you going home with empty wallets.
The musubi recipe sounds good. I've never tried shoyu, sugar and garlic ~ only shoyu, mirin and ginger, then added furukake-sesame sprinkles, thin slice of sweet omelette and slice of takuan. Haven't made it in years, doesn't work when only two.
I guess spam musubi is the farthest thing from your mind right now.

Gotta watch UH game on computer tomorrow...but maybe not.

  162. anklebiters:

    Shauna:

My satellite is out and Cox doesn't allow espn360..

  163. teejay:

ankles: Maybe that word gets tossed around the hive and now its in AZ. What you think?

  164. wade:

it's not a happy day in Trojan town. i can't even remember when USC didn't win the PAC 10. Maybe 7 years ago? Stanford looks very good this year.

  165. anklebiters:

At the beginning of the house hockey season, we would have a sheet with all of the kids name on it with their assigned game to bring goodies. You don't want to feel the wrath of KAN by the kids if you forget :!:

  166. wade:

uh oh...4th down deep in NM St territory...checking the humidity and wind shear...

  167. teejay:

Yes!!!! The word 'sucks' has left the WAC this week and now resides in the PAC-10!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  168. wade:

Hawaii decides to forgo the very risky and simply unsafe FG conditions.

  169. anklebiters:

    teejay:

We have a freshman 6'8" QB ... don't expect much the rest of the season...we may not even bee bowl eligible at the end...that is sad, can't even win 6 games :!:

  170. wade:

Salas comes up non clutch again.

  171. jack:

17-0 at the half and it's gone from cold to fricken cold.

    Jack...needs some hot chocolate

  172. wade:

Did anyone notice that SMU beat UTEP...which means SMU is bowl eligible. Good job, June. They may actually get a Hawaii Bowl bid...can you believe that Hawaii couldn't hold up our end of the bargain.

  173. anklebiters:

31-7 Oregon ..... ASU (...fill in the blank..) :!:

  174. wade:

ankles: sorry about your satellite. was wondering what was up with the AZ updates...not that we don't...um...care.

  175. sally:

Four hour nap! Woke up and thought it was Sunday! hahaha My SIL called, she made curry, don't have to ask me twice... I'm there! Get to play with my keiki boy too!

Having a great weekend so far!

  176. anklebiters:

    wade:

The updates is to keep teejay happy :-) ...someone has to be sucky....ASU is the problem child tonight...

  177. teejay:

Bryant Moniz, a walk-on sophomore has more guts and smarts than any QB Hawaii has seen since Colt walked on in '05.

  178. teejay:

    Second half coming up.

"stay away from the dark place, stay away from the dark place, stay away from the dark place...."

  179. wade:

teej: not quite there yet...I thought Moniz should've scored on his scramble but slid safely into the NM St 5. He should've Tebowed his way into the endzone.

  180. Shauna:

wade: What does non clutch mean??

sally: I love curry! The Japanese-style kind.

jack: Fricken cold? Are you BEEing a bit dramatic? It's Hawaii, not the Mainland! Do they sell hot chocolate at the stadium? Let me know!!

anklebiters: Oh, no satellite. Are you going to any games when you are here? Sign-up food sheets for the sports are a good idea...

  181. teejay:

wade: Hawaii's QB's are made in China or made of china cuz they break so easy. We need Moniz to slide.

"stay away from the dark place...."

  182. wade:

shauna: i've heard that Salas is really good. been the go to guy all season. but i've only been able to watch one other game besides this one. Salas in the "clutch" situations has come up with hands of stone. (ie ball somewhere else...like the ground)

  183. teejay:

"stay away from the dark place, stay away from the dark place......."

    mmmmmppppfffff, mmmphff!!!!!!

  184. teejay:

UH isn't moving the ball like in the first half. Maybe they should go to the run again. New Mexico is moving the ball against a very porous UH D.

"stay away from the dark place....."

  185. anklebiters:

    Shauna:

I dunno about attending a UH game...only the Navy game is available while I'm there.

  186. Scott:

(dropping by to see if my bro teejay is going crazy about UH football)

    ...all good so far :)

  187. teejay:

    Blaze Soares intercepts NM QB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  188. teejay:

Scott: teejay is staying away from the dark place!!

  189. teejay:

    Moniz throws an interception!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    NM TD!!!!!!!!!!!!

"stay away from the dark place"

  190. teejay:

    Spoke too soon.

  191. teejay:

Oh no!!!!!!! The coaches are making Moniz run. Moniz was made in Hawaii so I think its going to be okay (hopefully).

  192. anklebiters:

    XXX sucks :!:

  193. jack:

UH 17 NM 6. No hot chocolate at the stadium.

Shauna: can I borrow your friend the koala, my toes are numb.

    Jack...should of worn sh0es

  194. teejay:

Oh great they broke Moniz too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Mmmphhffff, smmmmmkk!!!

  195. wade:

    wow...hawaii qb's are fragile...

  196. jack:

Ankles: we all should go to the game while your here. O&E tailgate Pahtay!! OL can bring the musubi. :D

  197. anklebiters:

    ASU td....

    31-14 Oregon...

  198. wade:

    maybe QB = queen bee?

  199. anklebiters:

    jack:

That sounds like a guud idea.....1st Annual O&E tailgate :!:

  200. teejay:

    UH TD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Austin to Salas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Those two are helping me stay away from the dark place.

    24-6

  201. jack:

    Touchdown!!

  202. teejay:

wade: We don't need "the" QB to be broke too. She was made in....well I stay away from the dark place.

  203. anklebiters:

Oregon fumbles the kickoff at their 20 :!:

  204. anklebiters:

    ASU TD :!:

    31-21 Oregon.....

  205. teejay:

    ankles: Green bottle, green bottle!!!!!

  206. wade:

16 yd punt? eh, no worry... we know how you feel...

  207. teejay:

Shane Austin has cooled down and Greg Salas is beat!!!!!!!!!! He has 16 receptions already and almost two hundred yards. UH gives it up on downs.

  208. anklebiters:

    Oregon TD

    38-21

  209. Shauna:

O&E tailgate? :D :D When is that game??

jack: Here's koala! Want him for your feet or butt? ;)

teejay: Everything looks good!! UH's gonna win, right?? :)

  210. anklebiters:

    Shauna:

    11/28 is the Navy game.

  211. teejay:

Shauna: This is UH, so no can tell.

  212. wade:

the thing about espn360...the commercials are at MUCH HIGHER VOLUME than the actual broadcast...

  213. teejay:

Alright, UH leads 24-6 with four seconds left, I think we have this game wrapped up.

  214. jack:

UH wins! 24-6. And yes I stayed for the whole game.

Jack...may need a grilled cheese to celebrate.

  215. anklebiters:

Whadayaknow....I can catch espn360 :!: COX must have allowed it recently...I can watch the replay of the UH game :!:

  216. teejay:

Unbelievable!!!!!!!!!! UH wins another one and more so I stayed away from the dark place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BF should wear his 'teet out to the mall and wait till someone make a whispered remark about his pearly whites. He can sue them for defamation of character, humiliation and emotional grief....we can remodel the man cave with the proceeds
