Not a Happy Meal

October 21st, 2009 by Shauna

Get it right the first time. Please.

Ordering at a fast-food restaurant seems rather simple. Most folks order combos and you just pick your size.

Yet, how many times have you gotten the wrong order? I said Coke, not Diet Coke. Curly fries, not the regular ones. And no pickles!

But despite a mistake, I still wouldn't go all violent on the worker...

Pair toss coins, cones over wrong size fries
Associated Press

QUINCY, Mass. — Police said a Boston man and woman, upset with getting an order of small french fries instead of large, were charged for throwing money and cones at McDonald's cashiers. Christina Galipeau and Eugene Jackson pleaded not guilty to assault charges in Quincy District Court.

According to police, Galipeau, 22, became enraged after getting the wrong size fries at a Quincy McDonald's. Police said Galipeau exchanged words with a cashier then threw her spare change at her, hitting her in the face.

Police said 33-year-old Jackson then picked up two-foot tall cones from the mopped floor and hurled it at employees, cutting one employee's nose.

It was unclear whether Galipeau or Jackson have hired an attorney.

What kind of abuse toward workers have you seen at fast food restaurants? Do you normally get the right order on the first try?

Heard of any ODD food orders? Hamburgers without the meat, ketchup on ice cream, tacos without the shell?

I guess that makes me Itchy Knee San... Sheeesh

  5. Ukuhead:

How ironic.... I just finished watching the movie Super Size Me...

The McD near my house is super bad. they are about 50% or less in getting your order correct...

  6. anklebiters:

    I just luurve McD's Happy Meal :!:

Order is perfect, only if I speak Spanish ;-)

  7. teejay:

    Morning all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. King Katonk:

    Good Morning Hive,

As a recovering fast food junkie the only place that never failed an order was In and Out Burgers. They get it right every single time.

It’s amazing what can be accomplished when we all speak the same language.

“Wuz dat a cheeseburger deluxe or a hamburger deluxe with cheese?”

  9. Ynaku:

Good Morning. #2 no onions with large fruit punch please.

EH! Where's da beef? It happened to me. Took 2 bites before I realized it was an unintentional (or was it?) veggie burger. :x

  10. Scott:

I went to the In-n-Out in Modesto (that's a forgettable town in central Ca., in case you're wondering) last week and the workers were friendly young people, and even though the food took 15 minutes, it was correct, fresh and delicious! Although, their menu only has 3 choices, so it's not exactly brain surgery.
As a rule, I don't mess with fast food workers. Anybody who can mess with my food is a friend to me :)

  11. HNL2LAS:

    ohayooo gozaimasu!!

  12. sally:

    Good Morning Hive!

I don't really go to FF places, can't remember when was the last time. But they generally get the order right, probably cuz I don't deviate much. I don't like pickles so I take 'um out myself and give 'um to whoever wants them... just easier that way.

Ordered a sprunch once in Vegas and the guy looked at me like "heh?"

  13. sally:

My 1st job was as a Zippys Countergirl (complete w/ menehune mini dress and slush stained $h0es... and shorts under the dress for when we had to climb ladders to clean the ice cream machine).

I gave a customer his change once ...all coins... and he said he didn't want it. Well I sure couldn't keep it so I smiled (yes I did smile) and said "please take your change". He took it and THREW it at me! My little 16 yr old self was shocked! Gosh, he's lucky he didn't throw it at my older mmmph yr old self. Dayum!

  14. M:

Good morning anklebiters, teejay, King Katonk, Ynaku, Scott, HNL2LAS, sally and da hive!

Scott: do you know about In-N-Out secret menu? more choices.

We don't go to fast food to much and if we do our order is always correct.

  15. sally:

For those of you not on FB, I posted this a while back, I think it's so cute.
    ...except for the wannaBEE countergirl.

Gosh I would so do this. Yes I would!

  16. che:

    Good morning.

    Ukuhead congrats.

The 2 most memorable fast food experiences happened in Chicago and Japan. In Chicago on Michigan Avenue the McDonalds was packed. I wanted an bacon egg and cheese biscuit. The manager or assistant manager said it would be about 5 minutes but I could have 2 egg McMuffins for the same price now if I didn't want to wait. I took the 2 egg McMuffins. In Japan, the McDonalds was fast and my order was correct even though the girl didn't speak english and I don't speak Japanese. I just had to hold up fingers for the Big Mac meal and coke zero. I got what I wanted and the food tasted and looked good. Of course I didn't try and special order anything but I wouldn't do that at a fast food place here either.

  17. matt:

japan's McD's are guuud. the teri buta burger is actually pretty tasty and the fried ebi burger is good, too. also, they make some darned fine iced coffee there.

  18. M:

The four times I been to Japan I never ate any American type of food. Never went to any American Fast Food places. Every meal was Japanese food, breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.

  19. Ocean Lover:

    Good Morning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't go to the School Street Jack-in-the-Box. I once related an "experience" over there where I'd repeat what I wanted and the lady inside kept "hearing" something else.

    OL.................."No can" dat kine

  20. anklebiters:

I wonder what the baño looks like at that McD's :?: Would the WEIRDO BEE in one of the stalls :?:

  21. sally:

anklez: just when we were starting to get the WEIRDO image out of our minds. MayBEE that's where he's hiding.

  22. Shauna:

    Morning!!

anklebiters: We gotta ask Ocean Lover for his take on that!!

Ukuhead: Are those your favorite combo orders? #1, #2 and #3? ;)

What is everyone's favorite orders at fast food places? For me, it's always the taco combo with curly fries at Jack in the Box; Whopper Jr. with no pickles at BK and probably the filet o fish combo at McDonald's. Hardly go to Taco Bell. They don't have fries there!!

  23. matt:

    M,
the first time, my cousin and wife were shopping on takeshita dori and I stopped in the Mcdonalds to grab an iced coffee and check out the freaks passing by. i then had the thought to try the fries to see if they were the same as in the US (they are...I love McD's fries). then, when I looked at the menu, i saw the teri buta burger and ebi burger...had to try both.

  24. EMM386:

I saw a guy screaming at the cashiers of Carl's Jr. because they wouldn't honor his coupon. He placed his order despite the big sign by the register that corrected the typo in the coupon to show the correct combo that was on special. He ranted for ten minutes, despite the fact that the shift manager came out to explain that he couldn't do anything about it and the man would have to take it up with the local corporate office.

  25. Eli:

Good morning and happy hump day!!

I've seen customers yell at the employees but never where they start throwing things or punches at the employees. They usually get my order right the first time.

I've heard the ODD starbucks orders. double this, quadruple that, do a backflip, hang from the rafters. :P Sometimes listening to the order makes me think what did that person just order? I wonder if they always order things that way. Let me have a double hydrogen, single oxygen liquid with no solids and with a slice of citrus limon. :P

ODD image of the day...I bet that hole in the wall McDonalds has the best food in the world. All that extra flavor in the food. Yummy. :P

  26. visitor:

Good Morning. I'm not a frequent fast food customer. But I give the counter help credit, must be hard dealing with a lot of "difficult" customers. I've never really had a bad experience.

@Sally - that McD's clip was such a happy, refreshing video.

  27. Shauna:

Eli: I probably BEElieve that is possible at Starbucks. honda si boy talks like that when he mentions orders. I'm like what the hell is that? And yuck, I'll pass on the extra flavoring!! ;)

matt: That's good to know the McDonald's in Japan is just as good and has a few extra special items... Wanna do us some food music today? :D

EMM386: Interesting. I'm assuming companies are legally not obligated to honor coupons if they have a sign correcting the error? Remember the recent Best Buy error? But you would think at a fast food place, giving the guy the combo after it BEEing the store's error wouldn't make the company lose that much money vs. having a customer never return and telling his friends. Then again, the workers are probably only following the training manual and the proper protocol... ;)

  28. M:

@matt- I was told my our tour guide that the Japan Mcdonalds uses lard to fry the french fries...not very healthy although must taste really good.

  29. Jack:

    8)

  30. jaydee:

I used to work at a Jack-In-The-Box several years ago. One of the guys there was a real jerk and if a customer pi$$ed him off he would spit in the burger then serve it with a smile. I'm sure this must go on in other places as well but as Scott said, don't pi$$ off the workers!

  31. snow:

    good morning HIVE!

i usually order the same thing at most fast food places... a plain cheeseburger. "yes, i want cheese with that."

i've seen people get mad, but not outrageously, about incorrect orders. i think people in hawaii tend to not grumble as much as they could over inadequacies. not saying that they don't grumble... but i think there are times that they should and they don't so things remain status quo (ahh, sometimes things get fixed, sometimes not... ).

  32. anklebiters:

Taco Bell - Zesty Chicken salad
Burger King - hamburger with mustard only
Sonics - hamburger with mustard only

El Polo Loco - chicken meal
    Subway - Italian BMT
In-N-Out - the animal with no cheese
Long John Silvers - nothing on the menu to excite me
Panda Express - orange chicken and beef broccoli
    Filiberto's - breakfast burritos
    Wienerschnitzel - $1 sundae on Sunday's
Carl's Jr - nothing on the menu to excite me

    Pete's Fish & Chips - Pete's special - shrimp, fish, fries
Dairy Queens - Banana split

  33. anklebiters:

I always order cheeseburger with no cheese when it's cheaper than a regular hamburger. :!:

  34. Kage:

    Good Morning All!

My favorite experience at a FF place was at McDonalds in Tokyo.

It was the very first day that the McDonalds there started serving breakfast items. The group I was with wanted to stay in a bit so I took the orders and went to get breakfast for everyone by myself.

The best thing is that they had pictures and all I had to do was point and hold up fingers for the number I wanted of each item. As most know I am a BEEg guy. I started ordering one of this and two of that, one of this, etc. Then it came to the hashbrowns. I pointed to the picture and the girl at the counter held up two fingers... I shook my head and held up EIGHT. She had this look of astonishment. I am sure they thought it was all for me, myself and I..haha.

  35. Jack:

I am not saying that I don’t complain, believe me there are times when you just have to say something. When the service I receive is not at its best  either in a fast food place or a chain restaurant; I always stop and ask myself am I willing to do what they do for the same amount of money. Most of the time the answer is no, and I just grin  and bear it.

  36. rayboyjr:

    :D :D :D :D :D :D :D Good Morning!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

... a few years back, I was seeing this girl who was a vegan ... we'd eat out, but always vegetarian or vegan or whatever you call it and I didn't mind ... yeah right!!! ... actually drove me a little crazy ... and hungry ...

... stoopid thing is, when I went to eat on my own ... I'd actually try to eat less meat ... so like a fool, whenever I ordered something with meat ... I'd remove at least half of it to cut down ...

... and I remember ordering tacos at Taco Bell® without the meat ... the servers would just look at me with the look like "you're weird" !!! ... so I'd just tell them to put in more lettuce and cheese ... and that's basically what it was ... a taco shell, lots of lettuce, cheese and taco sauce ...

... so yes, I was always pretty fricken hungry all the time ... how do vegetarians manage???

    Θ( O O )Θ

  37. Shauna:

Kage: I just LOVE hashbrowns!! Too funny she thought you wanted it all. It's sorta like you gotta BEE aware of the impression you create with your order and issue some kind of explainer! Don't judge me!

Jack: I need more lessons in this tip of yours:

I always stop and ask myself am I willing to do what they do for the same amount of money.

rayboyjr: Wow, I give you credit for taking on some of her habits. So how did the relationship end? Was it a fight over you liking meat too much?? I love vegetables (constantly buying that bag of lettuce from Costco) but I love meat just as much!! Hamburgers, filet mignon, chicken nuggets, kal bi, etc... :)

  38. rayboyjr:

What is everyone's favorite orders at fast food places?

Jack in the Box ... I'm with you ... usually always had the taco combo too ... but I don't think it's listed on the menu ... I really used to love when they had the bigger Super Taco's ... I think it's just regular taco's now ... so unhealthy, but I love it anyway!!! ... if I forget about the taco's, then I'll get the Spicy Chicken sandwich ...

Burger King ... I'll get the Grilled Chicken Sandwich ... yummy!!!

McDonald's ... always get the filet-o-fish meal too ... sometimes without the tartar sauce because they put so much of it on ... or just wipe it off because it tastes fine without it ...

... funny that I never order hamburgers from these burger places ...

  39. Shauna:

anklebiters: Do you ALWAYS order those things without fail? Cause it's funny how we tend to go to a certain restaurant for that particular item...

snow: Unless I go to a place frequently, I'll stick with my favorites!

King Katonk: The few times I've BEEn to an In-N-Out I'm always impressed how simple the menu was. It's a pretty smart concept. Why have such a big menu? Most people head to a place for a particular item anyway...Though I guess a more varied menu can accommodate more people's tastes... Do they have shakes and stuff there also?

  40. visitor:

I have seen where some folks suffering from "superiority" complex take it out on food service workers. One case in particular, an obvious "mainland" person berated a young local girl over an issue. The young girl held her ground and handled herself well. Before stepping in myself to cool the guy down, his wife/girlfriend had him back off. You could tell the girl was nearly in tears, but she did not back down. A manager was not around. After the obnoxious person left, people on the next table "tipped" the girl for handling the situation so well.

Like Jack said, would you do what they put up with for the amount they make? So when something goes wrong, unless it's major or if they have a bad attitude, I'll let it slide.

  41. Shauna:

Ynaku: What did the veggie burger taste like?? Don't think I ever ordered one of those!

Scott: I always remember the workers at In-n-Out BEEing really cheerful! Or is it just their uniforms and decor of the place? Plus it always looks very clean! ;)

sally: Someone once told me not to tell them to leave the pickles out cause the worker might get mad he has to deviate from his mass production of burgers and might spit in my food. So now I just take it out myself...

jaydee: No one ever complained to the boss? That is so wrong though I guess some customers deserve it!

rayboyjr: YES! For some reason they don't include the taco combo on the menu!! I thought they were known for their tacos! My second choice would also BEE spicy chicken! I also think they put too much tartar sauce on. Haha! Not sure if I tried the grilled chicken at BK since I love the Whopper so much. I never eat hamburgers at the other fast-food places. I think it's the sauce that makes it different...

    @Shauna

As @M alluded there is a secret menu for In-and-Out.

Here is a copy from the internet…

    http://daviswiki.org/In-N-Out_Secret_Menu

When I was on my low carb kick I used to order my burgers “Protein Style.” Unfortunately, I would get an order of Animal Style Fries and defeat the purpose.

Memorize the list and order accordingly. The next time you go there you’ll sound like a seasoned veteran and not some lost rookie.

  66. Shauna:

King Katonk: Ooh, that's the secret menu! Interesting! Got lemon fries, a One-by-bitch and even onions in a milkshake was listed!! So that was a Protein Burger... I went to this other burger place in Vegas that was also pretty good. Can't remember if either the word Big or Palace was in it... I liked it. Never went to that White Castle place...

sally: At least when that person threw the spare change back at you it was like free tip!

  67. Eli:

Shauna: The Hat is famous for their pastrami sandwich and I think they are only located around the L.A. area. Before they packed the pastrami meat in the sandwich. I would eat half the sandwich and I would be stuffed. But now there is less meat in the sandwiches and the prices have gone up. I can probably eat 2 sandwiches now.

  68. matt:

    Shauna,
    in vegas, Fatburger>In-n-Out

  69. Shauna:

    matt: That's the one!!!

    Eli: I see...

L10pc: From the other day, glad to hear you also like "Glee." Which is your favorite character?

  70. King Katonk:

    @Eli

What do you think of Johnnie's Pastrami on the Westside?
    That's my personal favorite.

FYI - Did you know Fatburgers is owned by Magic Johnson?

  71. anklebiters:

Here's the secret menu in pictures, for those who cannot imagine what it looks like...I keep a printed copy in my car.

    http://www.badmouth.net/in-n-outs-secret-menu/

  72. Jack:

With all this burger and Las Vegas talk, I want to go on a trip. :D Who's with me? ;) Burger Bar @ Mandalay Bay is one of my favorites.

  73. anklebiters:

    Shauna:

If I want a particular thing to eat, I'd go to that place....if it's near by.

  74. turk fontaine:

Ketchup? We don't need no stinking Ketchup.

  75. Shauna:

anklebiters: Ooh, the visuals totally helped! The animal style one looks messy! But I am totally excited about the Lemon-Up! I gotta try that one day!!

turk fontaine: Hah, I'm not a big ketchup fan though I like pepper and ketchup with my fries. It won't kill me to eat it plain though.

Jack: TAKE ME TAKE ME!!!! Wait a minute, last time you left me BEEhind at the airport! Hmm...never BEEn to that Mandalay Burger Bar. I want a burger for lunch now also. Instead it's PB&J day. Sigh... :( BTW, did you see the Grilled Cheese option on the secret In-n-Out menu? :D

  76. matt:

    Jack,
never been to burger bar, but i was recently watching a show with Hubert Keller on it (the Chef at Burger Bar). he made braised short ribs and took the left overs, shredded them (they were fork tender and looked pretty good over the tv screen), smothered them in gravy (a reduction of the braising liquid), put them on a hamburger patty, covered it with another patty, sealed it and grilled it. looked very tempting.

he just opened a burger bar in sf, so i may have to brave the crazy city and try it out.

  77. matt:

if a bee hive is next to a clover field, the honey tastes like clover. ditto for other lavender, orange and other flower types...what does honey from burger and fries eating bees taste like?

  78. Eli:

King Katonk: Nope I have never been to Johnnie's Pastrami.

  79. anklebiters:

Is there an establishment in Hawaii that serves GUUD pastrami sandwiches :?: There use to be one here but it's no longer in business. I use to buy the pastrami at Costco and make my own sandwiches but it never tastes like the ones served at restaurants :-( .

  80. Shauna:

anklebiters: There's a Giovanni Pastrami place in Waikiki but not sure how good it is...http://www.giovannipastrami.com/

matt: Hmmm, very interesting question...is the honey taste that noticeable?

  81. Rodney Lee:

So that means, since the honey pot is located next to the ... Ewww.

  82. matt:

    Eli,
Johnnie's is good stuff. I prefer the traditional kosher delis around hollywood, though. johnnie's serves theirs as a (gasp) french dip on a roll instead of properly on rye with mustard only. the meat is good, though.

  83. Jack:

@Matt: Yeah the Burger Bar is a little pricey but totally worth it.

@Shauna: I won’t bring up how late we were the last time we WAITED for you at the airport. ;) I just looked up the prices for a flight and it’s only$390 for next week, now I’m really thinking.

HNL2LAS: When are you leaving? :?:

That grilled cheese option does look interesting (thanks for the pics ankles) :D

  84. Rodney Lee:

I think the McDonalds on Beretania street - the one directly across of Burger King - is where they train new workers.

Besides the service being super slow and mistakes with the orders, the real giveaway is the McDonalds building located right behind it. I'm guessing that McDonalds University is located there.

  85. Jack:

That Giovanni Pastrami place is pretty good. I’ve only had the sandwiches from there once; we all liked what we had. Every time we’ve gone there since we ate the pizza, it’s really good. Plus during happy hour the pizza is free with your beer. :D

    How's the Subway pastrami?

  87. snow:

jack - have you tried the brisket sandwich at giovanni's? it's really goood!

eli - what? you've never been to johnnie's? the staff there says that they must have hawaii people come in every day to take sandwiches back home! i prefer johnnie's to deli style... probably because i don't really like rye and i hate mustard!

*once had a really pissed of cousin because i refused to eat a pastrami sandwich with mustard. "you're going to starve then." "okay!" *

... going back to the topic of fast food workers ...

... in the same train of thought as Jack ...

... fast food workers are probably the lowest paid workers for what they do ... it's a fast paced job ... and they have to deal with hundreds of customers ...

... even though orders are punched in electronically ... the words on screen might be hard to read ... there's cross-talk between employees and packages flying around ... some mistakes are bound to happen ...

... sure, it's reasonable to expect them to do a good job at getting our order right and quickly ... but how much time do we actually interact with them anyway??? ... 5 or 10 minutes??? ... how much money we talking about??? ... $5 to $10 dollars??? ... a little more for a family order??? ...

... is it really worth getting upset over a mistake in your order??? ... for me ... it's not ... just happy for all these workers that make my life so much easier!!! ... c'mon cut them some slack!!! :D

OMG! Queenie.....I tink you got HAUNA BREATH!

OL.....................reminder to self.........talk to Queenie at arm's length or more

  112. Ocean Lover:

Actually........I'm impressed. You can eat "filet mignon" and "chitlings" at the same time. You don't "food discriminate"......although you should keep a mint handy. ;-)

OL................good manners suggests good hygiene habits

  113. Eli:

matt & snow: Yup, I've never been there. *lowers head in shame* :P Well, The Hat's pastrami also uses the french dip roll so I would probably like Johnnie's pastrami. I also like my pastrami with mayo too.

  114. matt:

Eli, Eli, Eli...mayo??? have you no shame???
you know, they'd probably do bodily harm to you at Carnegie or Katz's in NYC if you asked for your pastrami on a french roll and with mayo, right?
if you want a kosher meal in Hollywood, check out Greenblatt's deli on Sunset. kind of a busy area but there's parking in the back. great pastrami and the rest of the menu is good, too.
Canters is supposed to be good, too, but I haven't made it there yet.

    @Snow,
pastrami is made from brisket. It's brisket that's cured ("corned") and smoked. if it's cured and not smoked (just cooked at that point), it's corned beef.

    I luuuuuuv pastrami.

  115. KAN:

Wait, wait, OL: gizzards ≠ chitlins. Not usually from the same animal, either. Gizzards are "a thick-walled, muscular pouch in the lower stomach of many birds and reptiles that grinds food, often with the aid of ingested stones or grit." Chitlins (or chitterlings) are "the small intestine of swine, esp. when prepared as food." Not that you can't keep teasing Shauna about what she's eating (or what she THINKS she's eating) - carry on. ;-)

I've had chitlins but not gizzards (my dad lurrrrrves deep-fried gizzards, esp. from Ezell's Fried Chicken in Seattle). I had chitlins at a little soul food place in Wilmington, N.C. The waitress was surprised to see me eating them - she said even she didn't eat 'em. They were really good - very rich and soft - I'd eat 'em again.

  116. KAN:

I don't eat a lot of fast food, and I refuse to eat Mickey-D's hamburgers, but I really, sincerely, wholeheartedly miss Taco Bell's enchiritos. They used to use a sauce in those things that I still crave to this day. It's a taste from my teenhood.

My favorite national fast food joint is Arby's. I love the beef n cheddar with potato cakes. One chain that I wish would open in Seattle is Chik-Fil-A.

  117. anklebiters:

    KAN:

We have Chik-Fil-A on campus...only problem, too expensive :!:

Do you remember the Bell Beefers that Taco Bell use to serve years ago :?:

  118. visitor:

@ Matt - Carnegie Deli! Super pastrami sandwiches. We made the mistake the first time we went and ordered a sandwich for each. We should have looked at the others eating, we'd have known how big the sandwiches were. And the bowl of pickles... We had to walk our meal off at Central Park, just down the street.

  119. KAN:

@ Ankles: I don't remember the Bell Beefers. I was so in love with enchiritos that I never ordered anything else!

  120. Eli:

matt: Buwahaha!! I know...I know...but it tastes good with mayo. I like pastrami with the mustard too. :D

KAN: I remember the enchiritos. Those were good. That was the only item my mom would eat at Taco Bell. Every time I would ask what she would want, she would always say enchiritos. haha. I wonder if they still make enchiritos? I haven't been to Taco Bell in like forever.

  121. EMM386:

@Kan: Gizzards at 8FatFat8 is pure bliss. It'll kill, but it's good. I've had pig intestines before, but it was in dinuguan. Does that still count?

  122. rayboyjr:

@Kan ... hey Kan ... how do you know so much about these exotic foods??? ...

... I know about gizzards ... in fact, my mom would finely chop up the gizzards and use it in the stuffing she made for Thanksgiving ... I didn't notice any difference in taste ... but I don't think I would eat just the gizzards ...

... as far as chitlins ... I still don't really know what that is ... except as you mentioned that it's intestine ... and I'll pass on trying that for sure ... isn't it some kind of Southern type of cuisine??? ...

... hmmmm ... it's close to dinner time ... but why am I not that hungreee any more??? ... ;)

  123. NKHEA:

Wow to much to read :(

banana; yeah Shauna loves dem popcorn chicken, she ate'um all up 8O

NKHEA....jus wonderin how da popcorn chicken got in her plate

  124. BananaFysh:

@NKHEA -- Whatever Queenie had on her plate, she put it there herself! :)

Oh man, that was too funny! I almost shat myself!

  125. rayboyjr:

@matt ... wow ... you're quite the pastrami aficionado ... interesting facts you bring up about pastrami ... who knew??? ... I didn't ... I always thought to myself that pastrami and sliced corned beef brisket looked alike ... so they're basically the same thing ...

... and I loves pastrami too ... with lots of mustard!!! ... hey, no wonder I love the fresh corned beef with lots of mustard too ...

... I'm feelin' pretty stooopid right now ... not knowing the difference in these meats ...

  126. BananaFysh:

    @KAN -- Enchiritos! Ah! I miss those too! :(

I used to like the Chilitos too, until I learned something about the name.

So the Chilito was a chili and cheese burrito. I guess it was a cool "mash up" name the marketing people latched on to.

I was talking to a friend one day -- he was of Mexican ancestry and moved here from SoCal -- and he had asked me what I had to eat from Taco Bell. When I told him "A couple of Chilitos" he started to laugh. :x

So I asked him, "Eh, wassup wit dat? What's so funny?" He told me that Chilito meant "little chile," like a little chili pepper. He then pointed at my crotch and said "That's where your 'little chile' is!" and started laughing some more! :x  :x

I never ordered another one after that! (not that there was anything wrong with it, if that's who you are) ;)

Soon after, Taco Bell renamed that item, and just called it a "Chili-cheese burrito." I guess someone in corporate got the memo!

Thank goodness! I could start eating them again!

But every time that guy saw me carrying a Taco Bell bag, he would ask me if I was eating Chilitos again. grrrrrrrrr

    Stupid Taco Bell. :x

  127. KAN:

@rayboyjr: I like trying all kinds of ODD food. I read somewhere (but can't confirm) that for every new food you eat, Japanese people believe you get 72 extra days of life. Sweetie likes to joke that the first time he visited Hawai`i, he gained about 3 1/2 years. One ODD food I really wanna try: haggis. I've already determined I don't like natto or uni. ;-)

@EMM386: dinuguan absolutely counts! I'd like to try it some day. I think it's ODD that I liked chitlins but I won't eat na`au.

(Somebody catch QB - I think she's about to faint with the mention of all these ODD foods.)

  128. KAN:

@BF: Size doesn't matter, remember? :-D It's the heat in the pepper that counts (oooh, did I REALLY just type that)??? (Please, Mrs. BF, don't hurt me!)

Reminds me of that story of why the Chevy Nova didn't sell in Spanish-speaking countries - "Nova" means "it doesn't go."

  129. Ocean Lover:

    Hey KAN!

I know chitlings not the same as gizzards....but FOR SURE I AIN'T E'IN any of dose so in my book (not to bee confused with the JESUS BOOK) its da SAME TING! ;-)

Next ting ya know, Queenie's gonna start looking at lil FIDO (the black one) with the thought of "fries on da side"!

    OL.................wondering if FIDO's okay

  130. matt:

    @KAN,
you gotta have fresh, fresh, FRESH uni. so different than most of the "fresh" uni they serve. I used to hate it, too, but I had it in Japan, just scooped from the urchin, and it was incredible.

@OL, chitlins are guuuud. gizzards are guuuud. in general, parts are guuuuud.

@rayboyjr, did I mention that I luuuuuv pastrami? i've done some research on the subject because i'm planning making my own this winter. can't get good pastrami here (everyone either fries it on a flattop griddle or microwave to heat it up and that's just as wrong as mayo).

there's a yakitori place in LA that is pretty authentic. they serve up lots of different grilled chicken parts. I'm not so crazy about the liver because of the mouthfeel (although I like the flavor and I like bacon, liver and onions), but the chicken hearts, cartilage (they use the keel bone that separates the breast meat and grill that up...crunchy and good), beef tongue (luuuv beef tongue), but my favorite has to be the chicken skin. salted, sauced, grilled chicken skin on a stick. so ono. for the LA guys, I'm talking about Shin Sen Gumi Yakitori in Gardena.

  131. EMM386:

@Kan: You gotta try the dinuguan. With the pig intestines and heart as well as pork. Oh so gooooood. That, pinakbet and rice, and I'm a happy man.

  132. sally:

Good Evening Hive! (finally pau work)

When my boss goes to L.A. he always brings back these monstrous big pastrami sandwiches for us. They're so huge I end up with lunch for 2 days. MayBEE its from Johnnie's or some other place mentioned here? It's yummy!

Dinuguan? Oh my! I'm sorry... no. My ex BF ate that once at a FF Filipino place, his stepmom saw my face (didn't realize I was making a face) and took me to the Korean FF place. Not sure if it's still there, it's in the Kukui Grove Shopping Ctr on Kauai.

  133. M:

    konbanwa hive!

Shauna: is the pah-tay still on for Sunday?

  134. snow:

matt - i was thinking "hey, sounds like what i ate at that yakitori place in gardena!" - and it was! i actually liked the liver but didn't like the heart... too crunchy (and just the thought grosses me out)! and, about the pastrami, thanks but i know the differences between the briskets... i should have said bbq brisket sandwich... which i think is better than the pastrami at giovanni pastrami.

  135. losthawaiian:

If you are in LA, the best pastrami sandwich, hands down, is found at Langers deli. It's across from macarthur park in downtown LA by Wilshire. The pastrami is so buttery good it melts in your mouth.......

  136. Shauna:

EWWW!! All this talk of ODD food! Kidding! ;) I'm in heaven since I got to have Chinese noodles for dinner tonight!! I hardly get to eat that :( Plus some spicy kung pao chicken!!

losthawaiian: Hey stranger! So talk of pastrami sandwiches brought you back out? ;)
