Singing a different tune
October 19th, 2009 by ShaunaGrab the mike or grab away the mike? Oh, when it's time for karaoke all the wannabe singers come out. Sure, some definitely impress. Others, what the heck? Yeah, you yourself may not be a singing superstar, but if you're singing in an open restaurant, at least be mindful that you may not have an enthusiastic audience.
I barely sing when we rent out the private rooms. I don't know why I was punished with a voice that can't carry a tune, but at least I know that. So only close friends are subjected to my wails of what can sound like a dead animal. At least they won't punch or kick me or pull my hair as a sign of disapproval...
Six arraigned for karaoke attack
UPI
STAMFORD, Conn. — Six Connecticut women arraigned on assault charges are accused of attacking a woman singing karaoke at a restaurant because they didn't like her performance.
Stamford Police Lt. Sean Cooney said the women made derogatory comments to Leidy Alcantara, 25, while she was singing Sept. 23 at Bobby Valentine's Sports Gallery and Cafe and subsequently punched, kicked and pulled her hair, The (Stamford, Conn.) Advocate reported.
Michelle Rosedom, 19, of Stamford; Martisa Chambers of Norwalk; Danielle Swanson of Norwalk; Chaniel McRae of Norwalk; and Deja Hines and Kiana Strickland of Stamford were all arraigned.
Each of the women are accused of third-degree assault, conspiracy to commit third-degree assault and breach of peace.

I've sung at karoke bars but I know my limitations. I won't sing a song that I can't reach that high note, like say, Earth, Wind and Fire.
I don't think bad singers should not be allowed to sing.... but limit them to one or maybe two songs, that's it! Take the mike away from that person, please!
Good morning ankles!

Good mornin' jaydee....
Nothing is worse than a singer who thinks they can sing...it's like being an expert..there are real experts and then there are those who imagine they are
If anyone can sing like Mariah Carey - reach those incredibly high notes - the mic is hers all night

A friend of mine used to compete in Karoke contests. He was in 'Vegas for a competition and sang a Tom Jones song. He ended up winning the contest and afterward this humongous guy comes up to him and says, "Tom Jones wants to talk to you"; I guess he was watching in the back of the club.
He goes over to Tom all nervous because he didn't know if he was in trouble for singing his song. Tom introduces himself and says,"You know, I've heard a lot of people sing my songs but yours was the best I've ever heard. I wanted to just tell you that".
My friend was completely shocked and honored. Tom Jones complimented him! How cool is that?!!

October 19th, 2009 at 5:33 am
Good Morning!
I just went karaoke this past Fri with my Birthday Gang. We get a private room where we can bring our own food, booze, soda, props, etc. Most songs we all sing, mic or no mic. There are certain songs we just know, it's a solo song and we give the floor to that one or two people. We dance, do choreography, keep imaginary score boyz vs girlz. We usually have the room for 6-8 hrs.
No song is banned, if I really don't like the song I use that time to go to the restroom. LOL But karaoke is not totally about who can sing the best, it's about having fun. Heck, if a person is that good they'd be a paid performer. Geez, loosen up, I have friends who can't carry a tune (one is tone deaf- seriously) but it's about having fun together.
I don't have a fave song, it ranges from Patsy Cline to Stevie Nicks to Grace Slick, to Anne Murray and everything in between. We have favorite lines to certain songs, favorite choreography to certain songs, we're just nuts and enjoy being together.
I have friends who can sing really good and other friends who are like Julia Roberts in My Best Friend's Wedding. It's all good. It's all fun.
I'm still waiting on the day I can hear Aunty Paula sing.

Hi Everyone.
Sally: #24 I haven't heard that song for ages and ages. Isn't it ODD that people write songs about the ODDEST things and it sells?
I can't sing and like Shauna, I don't push it. But, I sing a lot when I'm alone at home. I've been singing Buttons and Bows aloud to myself since I was a kid. When I was growing up, we had a furo-ba. My chore was to heat up the water. I used to sing aloud, pretending to be a singer, while tending to the fire. But, put one other person in the picture and...duh, duh, duh that's all folks!

cool song, btw. the live version from the grammys w/elton john was particularly cool.

As far as karaoke, I myself can not carry a tune
so I don’t sing. If I am at a bar and a group of horrible singers start to sing I will either leave or get the karaoke book, select 20songs and keep the microphones shut off next to me.

Good Morning Hive!
Okay, I'll take a shot at the questions:
Favorite karaoke song to sing: Hm, funnest? Bohemian Rhapsody -- Queen
I dunno, I'd rather sing in the background than grab the mike.
Open bar or private room: Private room! Then no need listen to some of the bad singers you don't know.
Better the Devil you know, I suppose...
Solos or duets: I prefer solos. Sometimes you can have 2 pretty good singers butcher a duet BEEcause they can't harmonize.
ODDest song heard at karaoke: I was at a bar once and this dude was singing "Don't Be Cruel" by Elvis. English wasn't this guy's first language, and he was off key as well. Even worse, he would only sing every 5th word or so.
So he's like half-way through the song, and he approaches the guy working the karaoke. He stops the song, and a new song pops up: "Don't Be Cruel," by Bobby Brown. The guy picked the wrong song, but he didn't know it UNTIL HALF-WAY THROUGH!!!
Song fires up, and he's "singing" it the EXACT. SAME. WAY.
"Croooooool! ................................................YOOOOOOO!!!.........
..........CROOOOOOOOL!!!................YOOOOOOOOO!!!!!"
So ironic too, choosing that song.
Happy Birthday Wade!

What are some of the worst karaoke songs you have heard in an open bar? Did people make rude remarks, snicker or boo the singer?
... one of my friends is pretty bad ... he's monotone and flat ... I see others snicker or make faces ... but he's having fun and most are polite enough to not say anything ... I'll try to sing along to blend so maybe it sounds a little better ... but I'm not a strong singer and I have trouble not going flat myself ...
Do you think people can tell when they are out of tune?
... I guess most people who hear themselves can tell when they’re flat ... but tone-deaf people just can't tell either way ... they must think it sounds ok ... wait a minute ... am I one of those???
Should bad singers not be allowed to sing in open bars? Could it hurt customer service? Or what's wrong with people just having a good time — after all, it's not like you're competing on a singing show!

I know I can't sing, so I usually don't. I really enjoy music and listening to others. It's just on rare occasions will I even attempt. I feel that good singers have a natural talent, like some people can run quickly and some can't. Coaching and lessons may help, but the rest is genetics.

Why do guys always try this song thinking they can impress the girls and the girls will try sing a Mariah Carey song or a Whitney Houston song and sound like cats in heat?
October 19th, 2009 at 5:33 pm
Funny - we were just talking about this at a kanikapila on Saturday. The last time I sang karaoke was the day I turned 24 at a tiny 10-seat bar in Kyoto and I'd like to keep it that way. I sang "You Belong to Me":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bw3Yi8kmp98
Another friend at the kanikapila said he was at one karaoke joint in Honolulu where someone else said "oh, s__t, someone who can actually sing" after the friend took his turn. (This friend has a fantastic falsetto.) Said friend then went to another karaoke joint where the guy at the mike was a huge gay guy with a voice as good as he was big who was working the crowd. Friend said it was weird to hit the extremes in the karaoke world - to be the best in the room and then to be completely outclassed in the same night.

October 19th, 2009 at 5:48 pm
Silverdale? In November? Brrrrr. But the best `ukulele player in Washington State lives in Silverdale. Why're you going to Silverdale, teej?
October 19th, 2009 at 5:54 pm
KAN: Work. If I go I'll be there for two weeks and hope to take in the sights. Shauna can fill you in what I do for work but not here on this blog.
October 19th, 2009 at 5:58 pm
KAN: You like the old standards? That song is sung really low it reminds me of Judy Garland's voice in "Somewhere Over the Rainbow".

ankles: You slacking as the PJ master of this blog? I can even get close to what you listen to.
Shauna: Maybe one day but I doubt it.
Tell KAN to sing for you and ankles. I have a horrible voice but sing in my car with the radio blasting so I can't hear myself. My son is the only one who has heard me cut loose and he has issues with my technique.

October 19th, 2009 at 8:16 pm
Wahine wins game 3
teejay: you don't want to hear us sing...
October 19th, 2009 at 8:18 pm
Shauna: My son listens to the trash that's on the airwaves now. Rap has really decimated vocal quality along with most of the pop hits. I blame all this on my poor vocals. My son thinks I need to sound like a 'gansta'. Not likely in this life time, plus I can still kick is okole.
Funny how we judge music. I'm like KAN in that I'm willing to go back 400 years to know what music is and enjoy it for what it is. My son isn't willing to go beyond last year or last month for that matter. One day....one day.
October 19th, 2009 at 8:19 pm
What's up with not having Chris Mclaughlin as a color commentator? Has he been fired?
M: I love to hear people sing. You and Masako can knock you socks off and I'll be there rooting you on!!!!!!!
October 19th, 2009 at 8:21 pm
jack: You are out!!! Is Monday grilled cheese night or is every night grilled cheese night? I just know Thursdays are Thirsty Thursdays!
teejay: I tend to like new music but you can't deny the lyrics are way better on the classics!!
Wade: The extra setting is for you or any of my other O&E guests!
Ocean Lover: Did #3 happen today?

Shauna: it's MNF and my team was playing. We are heading to grilled cheese and karaoke now. You are free to join us if you like, I may even sing.

October 19th, 2009 at 8:38 pm

Did your team win? You MAY sing??? Open bar or private room?
October 19th, 2009 at 8:39 pm
Ukuhead: Turd Tuesday already?? Wow! The leader needs to BEE there!!
M: You gotta share some YouTube links later on Christian pop. You ever see the Word of Life broadcast on Sunday evenings? They always start the show with a nice song and dance...
October 19th, 2009 at 8:42 pm
Shauna: winner winner grilled cheese dinner!!! We are 6-0, wayyy better than my fantasy team
Open bar, see you soon

David In Oregeon: Hiya!!!!!!! How are you feeling? Did you finally beat the dang cold??
jack: La la la la la la....I am the Queen!! Ooh la la, bayBEE bayBEE!
M: Good night!
October 19th, 2009 at 9:14 pm
Good Evening All!!
Been a long day.
I like to sing karaoke. I'm one of those guys that everyone hates - knows all the words, but can't sing a lick. And I'll sing ANYTHING. Without alcohol in me too. It's all fun though. chawan_cut has been witness to my carnage before. But I definitely gotta do the private room thing. Only the people I know should have to endure that kind of ear trauma.
October 19th, 2009 at 9:23 pm
bamboohouse808: Hey stranger!! So you can BEE a sober singer? Cool though I can't picture that!
Sorry to hear about your long day!! Tomorrow can only BEE better...
Time to watch my "Gossip Girl" on DVR!!
October 19th, 2009 at 9:34 pm
QB: Nope, this thing is sticking with me and just won't go away. My sinuses are still acting up.
October 19th, 2009 at 9:36 pm
ODD Question: are private karaoke rooms soundproof?
October 19th, 2009 at 9:48 pm
Hello Hive!
Back from another night of karaoke at Krazy's. Mondays are good cuz it's half price. Tonight was girlz night. Fun Fun Fun!!!
D in O: no, rooms are not soundproof. But please don't let that stop you, it's still FUN! btw, are you still seeing the doc for your ails? Got good meds? This is way long to be sick like this. Please take care.
October 19th, 2009 at 10:30 pm
... I don't know how you night owls do it ... I find myself struggling to make a post late at night lately ... my mind is sleepy, lazy, empty and almost closing for the night ...
@sally ... I'm pretty jealous of your karaoke night out with your gang ... I used to have a gang like that ... we'd just get up and go maybe 2 or 3 times a week ... but sadly ... don't have that gang anymore ... I was one of the junker singers in the gang ... but got better over time ... btw ... is Krazy's the one on Young Street??? ...
@David In Oregon ... that's a funny thing about the private rooms ... many think that it's soundproof ... so they just go for it thinking they're in absolute privacy ... but if you are outside waiting or passing by or whatever ... you can still hear others singing ...
October 19th, 2009 at 10:35 pm
sally: nope, no prescription meds to deal with my illness, just using over the counter stuff.
October 19th, 2009 at 10:40 pm
Hi Shauna!
BEEn way too busy, but saw this thread and couldn't stay away.
Favorite karaoke song(s) to sing: The Dance by Garth Brooks
Sold by John Michael Montgomery
Yeah, it's COW MUSIC
Open Bar or Private Room: Either one - no shame!
Solo or Duet: Solo, I have problems harmonizing too..
ODDest song: Theme from Gilligan Island (but everyone knew the lyrics!)
Oh yeah....and I LOVE GLEE!!
October 19th, 2009 at 10:42 pm
@bamboohouse808 ... I know many guys like you ... in fact, I might be one of those guys too ... love the just go for it attitude ... no sked, just sing ... anyway ... most people aren't that bothered ...
... and half of people are drunk and won't remember tomorrow anyway ... and the other half sing just like you ... and the other half don't have the nerve to get up and sing themselves ... wait, wait ... 3 halves not good ... make that a third each ...
October 19th, 2009 at 10:43 pm
@rayboyjr: Krazy's has two locations but yes, I went to the Young St one tonight and last Fri. I work right across the street in the Interstate Bldg so parking is easy. If you ever go there, park in the Interstate Bldg, take a ticket. After 10pm the gate stays up so you leave for free. Do NOT park in the outside lot... they will tow (don't know why).
When I first started karaoke over 10 yrs ago, that gang used to go 2-3 times a wk also. That slowed down and now I've got 4 diff gangs that go. My main one is my "Birthday Gang". Tons of fun! But now I'm lucky if I go once or twice a month. That's why we sing so much at work.
October 19th, 2009 at 11:06 pm
rayboyjr: I think Cheers moved to the mauka ewa corner of Keeaumoku and King St.
October 19th, 2009 at 11:51 pm
QB:Sun is still okay for me, but if a different night is better, just let me know. bahhah is my stuff all in order, are you kidding me?? hehe... not even close... sigh... but I'm working on stuff like crazy... bahhaaha!
October 20th, 2009 at 1:25 am
@Teejay -- Thanks for the Bohemian Rhapsody.
No thanks for the drag Queens, though!
Not into them, thank you very much!!!
