This is hard work!

September 16th, 2009 by Shauna

Good gifts come in ridiculous packaging. You know those ultra-secure, hard plastic ones lots of electronics are sold in... Have you figured out the trick to opening those?

Well, help has arrived so you supposedly never have to risk scraping and cutting your hands again. But you decide if your way of opening these packages is still better...

How to open clamshell packaging
By Lori Bongiorno (Review posted on yahoo!)

Dealing with "clamshell" or "oyster" packaging (the rigid, sealed plastic that lots of electronics come in) can be a real nightmare. In fact, the term "wrap rage" was coined to describe the anger and frustration that inevitably arises when trying to pry the ubiquitous packaging open.

Thousands of people end up in emergency rooms each year with lacerations and puncture wounds from battling with the nearly impossible-to-open packaging. Many more get minor wounds from using sharp objects to open packages, according to American Medical News.

It's not the best choice for the planet either. Clamshell packaging is typically made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which is considered the most environmentally damaging plastic around. Its production releases toxic chemicals that make their way into our food supply and it's difficult to recycle.

Companies use the universally despised packaging because it secures items during shipping and helps prevent shoplifting. It's also easy to display in stores and allows consumers to see what they are buying.

Some businesses are finally getting the message that consumers have had enough. Amazon launched its Frustration-Free Packaging initiative to help reduce packing waste and wrap rage. An added bonus is that is saves consumers time as this video demonstrates. Sony, Microsoft, and Best Buy are also making efforts to phase out the aggravating packaging.

In the meantime, there's a surprisingly simple tool that can tackle clamshell packaging quickly, efficiently, and without injury -- a rotary can opener. The best part is you probably already have one sitting in a kitchen drawer. The video below shows how it's done.

Here are a few other tips you might want to keep in mind:

Buy products without clamshell or any excessive packaging when you have a choice.

Before you break out your can opener, check to see if the packaging has any tiny tabs or perforations (an addition some companies have made in response to consumer complaints).

Finally, if you like gadgets and you're not up for the can opener idea, there are a whole bunch of products on the market that are designed specifically to open clamshell packaging.

-----

What are your tips on how to open difficult packaging? Have you ever seriously hurt yourself trying to remove your item?

What's the ODDest product packaging you have seen? Are some products not clamshell package-worthy?

  2. David In Oregon:

Oops! I think the dictionary word is Vampires

  3. David In Oregon:

Vampires in the Hive, awaken!!

  4. NaPueo:

A good sharp blade has always worked for me.

  5. David In Oregon:

I agree with you NaPueo. A sharp knife will easily slice through anything.

  6. anklebiters:

Scissors works wonders on those clam shell packaging....just trim around the sealed seams. If you're like me, I like to keep the packaging so I'll cut it open just enough to remove whatever is inside it....in case I need to return it :!:

  7. anklebiters:

    Shauna:

RE: Glee, from last night - haven't seen it yet. Is there more than the pilot that they've shown?

  8. anklebiters:

Mornin' hive.....sara, shauna, and michelle too..

Season V of Grey's Anatomy is on DVD .... wooooooo hoooooooo :!: I missed so many episodes last season but caught most of them during reruns.....

Finishing up Season V of House also.

Happy Wednesday everyone! It's going to be a beautiful day with mostly sunny skies, dry conditions, and near normal temperatures. Valley highs are expected to range from 94-99. Nice weather expected for the rest of the week, but high pressure brings warmer weather for the weekend and next work week. Have a great day! -Sarah Walters

  9. Ynaku:

Good Morning ankles and the hive.

When opening those clamshell packaging, some people cannot bee trusted with a knife. They can cut into the product :( No never happen to me, but I've seen it.

    :P

  10. teejay:

    Morning all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    I love my tools.

  11. Ocean Lover:

    Good Morning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, that packaging can BEE a pill to open. I'll usually get a boxcutter and ALWAYS face the blade "out and away" from me and the item.

    OL..............time to make coffee

  12. anklebiters:

One of my co-worker tried to open the Wii controller package and sliced right through the wiring

Dunkin' Donut coffee this mornin'....with peanut butter cheese crackers...

  13. matt:

    morning AB and all,

scissors? seems like the natural solution.
the one I hate is the little sticker that comes on the CD and DVD case. after negotiating the horrible seam on the shrinkwrap and peeling that layer off, you try to open the jewel case and cannot!! there's an almost invisible plastic sticker running the length of the edge. it's tough, so a fingernail can't pierce it. the jewel case tolerances are pretty tight, so it's tough to get a blade in there. the sticker rarely comes off in once piece, so it's hard to peel off.

  14. anklebiters:

    matt:

I have a gizmo that takes care of slicing through the security tape on the case. I don't know if they sell it commercially as I received it from one of out vendors. It's a U channel plastic device with the cutting blade at the bottom of the U. Just place the case inside the U and pull the gizmo towards you....it cuts through the seal lengthwise. You still need to remove the seal and that is still a pain. You can use it to also cut the DVD wrapper to remove it.

  15. sally:

    Good Morning Hive!

I use one of those tough stuff shears, just cut it, risk injury, get it over with. I hate that packaging. Unlike ankles, if I need to return it, I give back all the ripped up plastic too to give a non-verbal display of dissatisfaction. One time the salesclerk just laughed. My kind of gal.

Shauna: I kinda liked the Glee pilot but saw the 1st episode last week... FAIL. But that's just my opinion. LOL I couldn't sit thru the whole thing, the characters are annoying and what? it's supposed to BEE funny? I'm lost, when was I supposed to laugh? My BFF loves it and says "it's so funny!". Go figure, I must BEE wrong. But I still won't watch it. HA!

    Greys next week!!!

  16. KAN:

Guuuud morning Ankles, Ynaku, teejay, OL, matt, & sally!

I hate those clamshell things. I have a pair of heavy-duty Fiskar scissors that I use for most of those clamshells. I've used a box opener to open clamshells before, but have had, shall we say, bad results. :-(

  17. KAN:

....in case I need to return it

So, ankles, your SM isn't the only who likes to return things? ;-)

  18. M:

Good morning anklebiters, teejay, OL, matt, Ynaku, sally, KAN and da hive!

  19. Ynaku:

@KAN #17 *fist bump* Sorry ankles

  20. anklebiters:

    KAN:

Unlike my SM, the only reason why I do returns is because it's the wrong size (not talking about clothes here) or not what I thought it was or did. SM returns because it's the wrong color (HUH??? Should of thought of that before buying it), doesn't like it AFTER bringing it home, changed her mind AFTER bringing it home, doesn't need it AFTER bringing it home, likes to see the word CREDIT on her monthly credit card statements... I think she has buyer's remorse, all the time :!:

  21. che:

    Good morning.

I like that hammer and screwdriver set. I would buy that as a Christmas gift.

  22. jaydee:

    Morning all!

I just use a sharp box cutter and make sure I cut on the edge; just in case, like ankles said, I have to return it.

I remember when CD's first came out they were packed in this huge security type plastic cage. Those things were almost impossible to crack open. Maybe this comment would be better in MLC. :)

  23. M:

They should have instructions on the package on how to open it safely.

  24. Eli:

Good morning and finally happy hump day!!

Yeah I like to use box cutters or scissors to open up those packages.

I also hate the packaging on the DVD's and video games. Sometimes I feel like I need to turn into the Incredible Hulk just to tear off the packaging. :P "HULK SMASH" :D

  25. KAN:

Sorry ankles! I'm just teasing you. :-) (Thanks Ynaku, for the support!) I often have buyer's remorse when it comes to sh0es. No, I don't buy a lot of 'em, and I hate paying over $50 for a pair, but I have such weird feet (wide with high arches) that I'm afraid that once I get the sh0es out of the store, they won't fit right.

I agree with M - should have instructions for how to open the danged things. It's just as easy to get cut on the raw edges of the clamshell as with whatever tool you're using to open it.

  26. sally:

Major irkage to see this kind of wasteful packaging and dangerous to boot! Like jaydee, I'm glad to see CDs in better wrapping than before.

  27. bamboohouse808:

    Good Morning All!!

I always try to see if I can pry that packaging open first. Sometimes(rarely), it will actually pop open all the way around. That makes my day. Usually, that doesn't work and I have to bust out the old heavy duty metal scissors or wire cutter to cut open the package. I've cut my finger several times on that sharp plastic. Probably while rushing to get what was inside.

  28. sally:

    Have a wonderful day everyone!

  29. Eli:

The ODDest packaging I saw was when I had to help my friend create a frankenstein box. He sold his aftermarket exhaust system to someone so we basically created one gigantic box from two large cardboard boxes to ship it out to the guy.

We created an ODDly shaped box where one side was higher than the other side because the exhaust system wasn't level. In the end it came out pretty good.

Another ODD thing we did was after we stuffed newspapers into the box so the exhaust wouldn't move, we ended up throwing all the leftover cardboard box pieces into the box and I saw some dead leaves on his driveway and threw the leaves into the box too. :P The guy probably thought why are there leaves in the box? haha.

  30. EMM386:

I hate those packages. I usually use and x-acto knife. Cutting the edges is impossible since it's thicker there, so I try to cut next to the edge so you don't cut whatever is inside. I don't recall ever hurting myself opening one, but I almost always swear at the company for using that packaging.

  31. Kage:

    Good Morning All!

The morning show hosts on the radio station I listen to call it DEVIL PLASTIC. I agree.

I use my razor box cutter and just slice through it. Of course I am very careful not to slice the product. Never thought of the can opener trick.

  32. NKHEA:

    Morning everybody :)

Me I just cut'um wit anything I can find :x

NKHEA.... goin work now, BEE back

  33. visitor:

    Good Morning!

Like a lot of folks I use box cutter or scissors. I bet there are a lot of people, including senior citizens who have trouble opening those packages. Good that they're looking at new packaging.

  34. Shauna:

    Morning morning!!

I'm surprised at how many of you use a scissors to open these packages. Isn't it too thick to cut through or ruin your scissors?

Ynaku: Thanks for the hit topic!! So did you try the can opener?

EMM386: I agree that the edges are thicker and even harder to cut, especially with a scissors...

    bamboohouse808: A wire cutter?

NaPueo and David In Oregon: A sharp knife!! I would think that's too dangerous. You really gotta make sure it doesn't slip the wrong way....

For all of those who use a SHARP razor, are there tools that sharpen a dull razor or you just gotta go out and buy a new one??

  35. Shauna:

New date for get together: HOW DOES FRIDAY THE 25TH WORK FOR EVERYONE? LOCATION TO COME SOON!

  36. Scott:

I thought the Hive only parties on work nights ;)

No, the 25th is good, I think.

  37. M:

I use a utility knife to open the package. It's an adjustable blade so I just adjust the blade length just enough to cut though the top layer of the package and cut away from me.

The 25th will not work for masako and I. My brother will be in town from Kona on that day.

  38. anklebiters:

    Hey Shauna:

How about using a Plasma cutter :?: lol:

  39. Eli:

Sure the 25th sounds good to me. :D

  40. anklebiters:

Had lunch at 3 Margaritas today...shredded beef chimichanga with sour cream, guacamole, and spanish rice...no refried beans. :!: $5.99.

  41. matt:

    @AB,
    lightsaber, imo

  42. bamboohouse808:

Shauna - Yes. A wire cutter. Strong like bull!!!

  43. Scott:

ankles, I thought you said you had 3 margatias at lunch!
that meal would cost $8.99 in Hawaii, at least.
I can't wait for cheaper things on the mainland.

  44. Shauna:

matt: Are you talking about that long sticker strip on one side of the CD?? My ex had this nifty way of efficiently opening those CD cases. I can't remember what he did but it involved some quick cutting (with his key, I BEElieve) and then having to take apart the CD case... Speaking of CDs, I'm picking you again for today's music...I think it's a tough topic!!!

anklebiters (and KAN): Haha, I thought about your soul mate when you mentioned returns also!! You were quick to explain your reasoning!

sally: Aw, you don't like Glee? They sometimes do these pauses in the scenes and I'm snorting up in laughter! That cheerleader head coach has that perfect expression of a snarl and sarcasm! Watch again tonight to see if you change your mind!

  45. Shauna:

che: Good luck finding that hammer and screwdriver set!! :)

M: Instructions on how to open such packaging would BEE hilarious. They should do that so they realize how ridiculous the concept is!

Eli: Haha, totally love that story about the ODD packaging. I would hate to find dead leaves in my package! How big was this exhaust system? And totally can't wait to see your Hulk Smash! I guess you can show me at the party since you said you'll BEE there, right? ;)

  46. snow:

    good morning HIVE!

hate that cumbersome plastic packaging! i usually use scissors to open them... not as dangerous to me than using a knife! using a can opener looks pretty difficult... not sure i'd even try that technique!

KAN - i actually thought the same thing about ankles comment regarding returns! heh heh...

ankles - i thought you had 3 margaritas for lunch today! woo ho... oops! :?

eli - remind me not to ask you for help when i'm packing my christmas gifts to mail...

OL - did getting frigid last night work out for you? ;)

*wondering what bamboohouse808 buys in plastic packaging... *

  47. snow:

qb - the 25th is okay with me.

  48. snow:

eli - but i will ask you for help to open my dvd packages!

*waiting for eli to turn into the HULK! w00t!*

  49. snow:

scott - i shouldn't have taken so long to type my comments... so it wouldn't have looked like i said the same thing as you to ankles! ha ha!

  50. jaydee:

I watched Glee last week and really liked it. It has some unusual characters which makes it interesting. Plus the singing and dancing is entertaining. I give it 3 thumbs up out of 4.

  51. Ocean Lover:

    SNOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.................

To tell you da truth....I FORGOT about the ice pack! Neck isn't as sore as yesterday and I can SEE MY TOES today!

I guess if I remembered the ice pack I would BEE 100% today instead I'm about 85% with respect to my flexibility.

    OL..............more flexible today

  52. M:

Masako and I could come later in the evening on the 25th after we do stuff with my brother.

  53. Kage:

The 25th will probably work for me. I am not sure if I will be on the island or not yet. Might be planning a staycation on an outer island.

  54. KAN:

OL - did getting frigid last night work out for you?

*wondering what bamboohouse808 buys in plastic packaging... *

Two snow zingers in as many lines! That, ladies and gentlemen, is efficiency at work! fist bump!

  55. EMM386:

I was just talking with my co-worker, and he said, it the item is in the middle and there is a lot of the plastic waste plastic on one side for the product name, etc (usually at the top), use a lighter to soften the plastic at the edge a little (don't melt it, just let it get a little soft) then it's easier to cut. After that, it should be easy to cut all the way across and get to your item.

  56. snow:

    KAN - thanks! ;)

M - you should bring your brother with you on the 25th!

  57. Shauna:

EMM386: Now that is a hot idea!!! Too bad I don't know how to use a lighter!

  58. HNL2LAS:

I use scissors too.. I'm sure it does ruin it, bhahah... but I'm not using a knife like the video.. with my luck I'd cut/stab myself! Bad enough I still get scratched sometimes from that darn plastic anyway! The can opener is a good idea though!

Have fun on Friday! baahaha, I had small kine chance on Mon 28th but now no can. I'm sad I won't BEE there, but I'll BEE back in Sin city bayBEE!!! hee hee.. uhmmm hopefully winning so I can buy a house, bahahha.. (hey, I can wish 'n dream right???)...........

  59. Scott:

jaydee, comment #50, you have 4 thumbs?! :)

  60. Shauna:

anklebiters: For that person who cut through the Wii wiring, did that person get to return it? ;)

M: Yeah, just come after or bring your brother. You know we'll BEE there for a while. Plus there's no work the next day!!

  61. Shauna:

    sally: You Go, Girl!!

Unlike ankles, if I need to return it, I give back all the ripped up plastic too to give a non-verbal display of dissatisfaction. One time the salesclerk just laughed. My kind of gal.

HNL2LAS: I'm sad you won't BEE there and even sadder you're making plans to leave me...your musketeer, your KEX sister... :( But we will definitely plan another thing BEEfore you leave. We need Skype at our parties!! And yes, don't use a knife opening those darn packages. Or should it BEE, "No, don't use a knife..." to make the sentence clearer? Anyways, don't use it just in case you stab yourself and you are alone and unable to call for help...

NKHEA: Just don't use your teeth to open those packages!! I'd hate to see a mouth full of bloody teeth!

  62. M:

Bananafysh could open the package with his teet!

  63. snow:

OL - well, glad to hear that you're feeling better but i wanted to know if being frigid was the cure for a pinched nerve!

  64. Eli:

Shauna: With the pipes and mufflers it had to be close to 6 feet long? The box we created was pretty BEEg.

snow: What's wrong with a little extra gift in your christmas presents for your friends and family? I know they would enjoy it. :D I'll make sure for Shauna's present I will add a little gecko. :P

If Shauna or snow will bring an unopened dvd to the party, I will show my hulk smash technique. ;)

How about magicjack, they available in Hawaii :?: All you need is a laptop and a regular phone...call anywhere in the US for free.

Co-worker returned it and they gave him a replacement :!:

  79. matt:

granted, they sponsor the show and Oprah has more money than all of us combined, but anyone ever wonder how skype works so smoothly when she does interviews (no, I'm not an Oprah viewer, but I can use the magic of TiVO to catch the interviews I want to see)? when I use it, its all sticky and choppy. guess i have to get the company to sponsor my house or something.

  80. Shauna:

matt: Wow, just based off those song titles I'm impressed!! MayBEE Skype works well for her since she doesn't have a whole ocean BEEtween her and the other person :?:

anklebiters: Never heard of magicjack... Wow, lucky co-worker! Wonder if he lied about how the wires got cut! ;)

  81. Kage:

Matt - you need a faster internet connection. Dunno if you are in Hawaii or not.

Hawaii's broadband does not rate to what is offered in some mainland markets.

Kage is not an IT professional, but he plays one on the blogs....hehe.

  82. matt:

use it to talk to my parents in Hawaii from up here in the bay area. must be there fault, huh?=)

on the songs...most of it is stuff I actually listen to and like. the Tracy and the Plastics one...not so much (a friend like them) but the name is so appropriate. Ditto with the jpop one. who knows why I knew that there was a jpop song named that but there really is no limit to the depths of useless knowledge that I possess and can access from my brain. too bad that doesn't apply to useful stuff.

  84. snow:

eli - uhhh, i think my gift recipients might prefer i stuff the empty spaces in their boxes with kaki mochi or mac nuts, rather than dead things off the ground... by the way, please let me know when you give that gift to qb... i'd like to BEE as far away as possible!!

You can also order it online.

anklebiters: Yeah, I know that song! Wasn't it in the movie "Armageddon"?

Kage: When the editor mentioned that song, then I was like, "Oh..." Not that I would know what she looked like or anything...

PARTY UPDATE: 6 P.M. ON FRIDAY THE 25TH AT (DRUM ROLL, PLEASE...) FORT STREET BAR & GRILL!! I think that place is a Triad tradition so we'll close the place down again. ;) Let me know if you're in!! :D

  111. rayboyjr:

    ... :) :) :) :) :) :) :) Good Evening :) :) :) :) :) :) :) ...

    ... well, almost ...

    ... wow, thought I posted earlier ... mind a bit scattered  ... maybe I dreamt that I posted ... what's the topic??? ...

... Peter, Paul & Mary??? ... strange, but the first thing I thought of was an Almond Joy ... isn't the company called Peter Paul or something like that??? ...

... an ODD thing for me is ... I think Almond Joy tastes way better than Mounds ... but aren't they essentially the same, except for the almonds on top ...

... same goes for the Hersey's chocolate bar ... the one with almonds taste sooooo much better ...

... oh no, my thoughts are rambling ... better stop ...

... anyways ... what else did Peter, Paul & Mary sing besides Puff and Jet Plane??? ...

... and Shauna ... Karen Carpenter's brother was Paul??? ... that would be a good trivia question ... I had no idea what his name was ... who knew??? ... good one ...

    Θ( O O )Θ

  112. M:

masako and I will be there, maybe late.

  113. EMM386:

@Ynaku: Didn't PP&M sing Leaving on a Jet Plane too?

  114. Ynaku:

@EMM386 Yes. John Denver wrote that song. But it didn't become a hit until PP&M released it on a single back in the 60's. IOt became their biggest hit.

John Denver also released a recording of that song a couple years later.

I like Puff the Magic Dragon.

  115. Ynaku:

OK gang, have fun. I'm off to my Wednesday Meetings.

  116. Ukuhead:

To open a cd, don't cut the tape. Take the case apart by popping it off it's hinge (side opposite the tape), peel off tape then reassemble the case.

  117. Ukuhead:

Another thing I hate are all those little f$@!"&$ twist ties that come on kids toys. Usually use wire cutters and cut them f&$@/?!s off...

  118. EMM386:

@Ukuhead: Yeah, all of my american Transformers come like that. There's a plastic shell for the back of the box, and the toy is twist tied onto the shell. The Transformers from Japan have two of the plastic shells, one for the back and one for the front. The two shells are taped together, so all you do is cut 4 pieces of scotch tape, separate the two plastic shells, and there you go. Much easier than the twist ties.

  119. anklebiters:

    Shauna:

    Richard Carpenter...

  120. anklebiters:

    Shauna:

Yep, was in that movie and my vacation song I always play on O&E when I leave for Hawaii

  121. KAN:

OMG! I hadn't heard Mary Travers had died. I was just listening to a PPM CD set Sweetie had bought for me a couple of weekends ago. So sad - she had such a marvelous voice. And the three of them together were magic (no pun intended).

On another tangent: Karen Carpenter did a version of "Honolulu City Lights" late in her career. IMO, it's kind of an odd version, but I think that's just b/c the Beamer Brothers' version was so iconic.

  122. KAN:

RBJ: Peter Paul and Mary also had hits with "If I Had a Hammer," "The Cruel War," "500 Miles," "Where Have All the Flowers Gone," and "I Dig Rock and Roll Music." If you don't know those, you probably know "There Is Love," which Paul wrote as a gift for Peter's wedding.

  123. David In Oregon:

QB (re: #34): To me, a sharp knife is never dangerous. :-D A dull knife is always dangerous. :-( A sharp knife allows me to cut things with minimal effort and maximum control.

As far as making sure "it doesn't slip the wrong way," the simple solution is to have the cutting edge facing away from you when you cut. If that is awkward, then keep your body parts away from the cutting edge of the knife. This will minimize the chances of you losing them, should the knife slip.

In terms of sharpening razors, while it could BEE done, most folks will simply go down to the hardware store and buy blade refills.

  124. sally:

    Hello Hive!

I so thankful my car is fixed, it gets dark earlier now. Me don't walk in the dark alone.

Kage: don't listen to Ynaku, don't follow me. I cannot go on 25th, got gig that night. But trust me, if I could find it... ANYONE can find it! I BEE pretty hopeless at driving.

I need to scroll back up to figure out how we got from scissors to Peter Paul & Mary.

  125. M:

    Good evening hive!

  126. David In Oregon:

sally: I make it easy fo' you. M of PP&M died.

  127. sally:

Ukuhead: so let me just make sure... you don't like the twist ties? bhahaha

@Shauna: Must BEE me, cuz everybody seems to like Glee. K-den you guys go watch 'um, go, watch 'um, watch 'um, go. I stick to my Ghost Hunters and Fringe... and Greys starts up next week!!!!! But just for da Queenie, I will try and watch it again. MayBEE next week will BEE better.

  128. Shauna:

David In Oregon: Never realized how true that was...ironically a sharp knife is safer as you can do the job right one time! Haha!!

anklebiters: I was watching "So You Think You Can Dance" where the auditions were in Phoenix. Had all kind ODD dancers come out and the judges were wondering what was up with that place. They said it was one of the strangest places ever... Your thoughts? ;)

  129. David In Oregon:

QB: Were any of the ODD dancers wearing dove shorts or mayBEE a red muu muu?

  130. Shauna:

David In Oregon: Didn't see any muumuu-wearing dancers but I think I may have saw some Dove shorts!

sally: So did you watch Glee? This week wasn't as good...but the music always is good!

Kage: Did Ynaku's directions for the Fort Street parking help you?

  131. BananaFysh:

    Good Evening Hive!

I need time to catch up! ;)

BEEn busy on vacation! (Is that an oxymoron? :? )

Having fun up here in the PNW!! Met KAN for lunch again today -- chowder from Pike Place Chowder. Winnahs! If you have to have chowder from just one place in Seattle, go to Pike Place and skip Ivar's, seriously. Ivar's is good, but Pike Place Chowder is better. :)

Thanks again for lunch, KAN! :D

  132. Ynaku:

ankles, Hawaiian has flights from AZ for $288 one way coach or $1021 1st class in October. Or if you leave Nov23 from AZ, Coach is $223 or $956 1st class. If you return on Dec 4 it $188 coach or $1006 1st class.

Some good deals. When you coming to Hawaii?

  133. BananaFysh:

BOT -- Once I was opening one of those clamshell packages with a razor utility blade -- the type where you snap off the segments to get a "fresh" cutting edge.

Somehow the blade got hung up on the plastic, and the whole blade extended.
That weird action made the blade slip in my hand, and I wound up slicing the index finger on my left hand. Not TOO bad, just from the middle of the second joint to the fingernail.

There was kind of a lot of blood, but I was more concerned that I would have permanent nerve damage.

But it wasn't nearly that bad. ;) I did go to the ER, cause I couldn't get the bleeding to stop with direct pressure, and raising my arm above my head. The doc checked it out at the ER, and told me the cut was really nice, like a surgical cut. Well, it was done with a razor, so it was clean. ;)

So the doctor had this cool roller ball pen with Krazy Glue in it, and just glued it shut, since the incision was so clean, and not jagged at all.

I have a small scar from it -- it's noticeable, but not like a freaky Frankenstein kinda scar. :) And no nerve damage either. *whew* If there was nerve damage, that would leave a LOT of unmined gold to BEE had.

  134. Ynaku:

Long day tomorrow. Time for me to say, "Good Night"

  135. Ynaku:

Hey BF, you having lots of fun? Enjoy it while you KAN.

  136. BananaFysh:

    @Ynaku -- Good evening sir! :)

Yup, having lotsa fun so far! It's all about the grinds.

Just left Seattle today, and am in Tacoma now, so no daily lunch dates with KAN. :(

Too bad for her, yeah? hee hee hee

You see the Man Vs. Food when he went to Seattle? I went to Red Mill burgers, and the Crab Pot. My wife and I had that big bowl of seafuud. Was pretty good! Had clams, mussels, shrimp, dungeness crab, snow crab  , corn on the cob, red potatoes, and andouille sausage. The only junk part was that the shrimp was overcooked, so was kinda tough. Other than that, was winnahs! :D

We ate the WHOOOOLE thing. I go put pics on FB later, when I get time.

    Whenever that is.

  137. Shauna:

Ynaku: Good going on giving anklebiters the airfares!! Good night!

BananaFysh: Glad you're having a great time!! How much longer is your vacation? I love chowder! I'll have to remember that if I ever go to Seattle... And ack, your bleeding finger sounded sore!! But as you said, lucky it was a clean cut! And pray tell, what exactly was in the package? Oh wait, if it's one of those unmentionable toys, then please, do keep it to yourself!

  138. BananaFysh:

    Hello Queenie!

We fly back on Sunday, so I have a few more days to enjoy! :)

I'm not sure what I was opening when I cut my finger. All I know was it wasn't one of your toys! Yeah, that time I opened the package for your "toy" I just pinched my finger putting the batteries in, but I didn't cut myself. ;)

    What, you forget already?

    haha!

  139. Shauna:

BananaFysh: Enjoy your last couple of days! Hope you don't burn like a lobster! ;) What are you doing ordering my kind of toys? Never mind, that's another skeleton in the closet you should keep to yourself!

...hmm...BananaFysh sure likes a lot of "toys"...

  140. BananaFysh:

@Shauna -- I dunno about burning now, cause it was pretty cloudy today, and rained right at pau hana time. :(

Hopefully it clears up a bit soon. I thought KAN ordered me some nice weather! I guess she didn't pay her bill on that. hehe ;)

Oh, and for the record, I didn't use "linebacker skills" on KAN -- I used my "power forward block out" skills on her. ;)

I never said I ordered your kind of "toys!"

I just changed the batteries for you, remember? ;)
Good thing you had those Clorox Wipes handy. heh heh.

I have an "interesting" pic to upload to FB later. I'm sure you'll get a kick out of it. ;)

  141. BananaFysh:

Okay, I'm pretty beat. Geez! I didn't realize it was so late!

Okay, time to moe moe! Gotta get up early to get an early start! :)

    Tomorrow's agenda: Fry's! :D

    w00t!

  142. NaPueo:

All who wrote that a sharp blade is safer are correct. It cuts cleaner and won't hang up on a dull portion. Cleaner cuts also heal faster and cleaner, less chance of having a visible scar.

  143. anklebiters:

    ynaky:

I plan to BEE there on 11/18. Hawaiian had round trip for under $300 but the deadline has passed on it. I'll BEE coming 1st class again...maybe they'll let me fly the jet this time

    Shauna:

Are you saying that PHX has strange peeps living here who can't dance :?: I think the heat got to them :!: Or the electric slide had a power outage, blame it on the cow music lovers

  144. anklebiters:

It's going to be a typical September day, with a cooler start, and a warm afternoon! Valley highs will fall right around the norm, ranging from 94-99. Mostly sunny with just a few clouds expected. There's a chance of storms in the higher elevations around us, especially, in eastern Arizona. -Sarah Walters

  145. anklebiters:

    #143 - OOOOPPPSSSS :!: Sorry Ynaku.
