You can win free game tickets, too!

November 26th, 2008 by Shauna

As the countdown to Thanksgiving begins, many of us are probably worrying about that turkey that needs cooking or other jobs that must get done before gathering for some R&R time with the family.

Of course, we’re also trying to remember that we should be thankful for a lot of things we take for granted as we go about our busy lives. As we help ourselves to seconds or thirds of that Thanksgiving meal, many are going hungry. The family and friends that bring joy to our lives may not exist for others. The technology we get impatient with when it doesn’t move fast enough is a luxury some may never get to experience.

Then there are those who have all that, and then some. Not that materialistic things should be the foundation of our happiness, but who wouldn’t be a bit envious at this one guy’s luck in contests... You thought the ODDS of winning a car was tough? Can you imagine winning two within two weeks?

Man wins 2 vehicles in 10 days, Chiefs tickets
Associated Press

TOPEKA, Kan. — In a span of 10 days, a man learned he won two automobiles in separate contests. Michel Horton picked up his newest ride on Friday, a 2008 "Bon Jovi Special Edition" Saturn Outlook, at a dealership in Topeka. He was notified of the win on Oct. 15.

The entry also netted him a guitar and gold-plated Bon Jovi records.

But that was his second free vehicle. Horton was notified Oct. 5 he had won a Mitsubishi Lancer in a contest sponsored by Bic lighter.

As if that weren't enough, he also won tickets to a recent Kansas City Chiefs game in another drawing.

Horton said rather than collecting the Lancer, he opted to take the cash-in value of $28,800 for the car. He said that will help pay the income tax and personal property taxes on his winnings.

So what preparations are you doing for tomorrow? Do you usually host the big meal, go to a family member's house or eat out?

How often do you count your blessings? Besides the usual family/friends, home, job and other basic needs, what else are you thankful for?

-----

Lucky comment numbers for today (will do new numbers each day to give more people a chance to hit it though #1, #88 and #100 are still the major ones): #29, #77 and #133

Ooops. I was going act like I was there before, but I get moke tendencies so no could help.

I'm not sure what we're doing for Thanksgiving tomorrow.

    Wife say...Me do...

  3. HNL2LAS:

Dang, I heard the guy won 2 cars in a week, but he won game tickets too in another contest? sheeez... THREE contests in ONE week? WOW!! I'm jealous! hehe

Don't count my blessings on a daily basis, and I probably should. Sometimes I get so upset about my life, that I forget that I have it good compared to a lot of others, and then I feel guilty. Then I feel thankful for what I do have.

  4. honda si boy:

whoa, this is right up anklebiters alley!!! okay, so it's not a corvette, but it's a CAR and it has to do with bon jovi! so ODD!

  5. Ukuhead:

Good Morning qb, BBDs, honeyBEEs, newBEEs and musketeers! Hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

I try to "remind" myself to be thankful every day... sometimes things get to you and you forget how lucky you are! They say people who are thankful live longer!? So, might as well be thankful right? It's good for your body, good for your soul!

I've never gotten lucky  ... never lucky enough to win three contests in a row, anyway! Ha ha... I'd be happy if I won one contest (in a row! heh heh!)! Oh... heck, I'd be happy to get a free soda with a combo meal! :)

Ukuhead - Shucks, missed you! They shut down the server so I couldn't get into the HIVE!! :(

  9. The Dork Knight:

Some people are just born lucky. Wish I was one of them.

Congrats to QB! O&E got a shout out from the boss for being the #3 blog in hits.

Like you guys, there are a lot of things I'm thankful for.

Family, a home, a good job.
    A supportive wife.
    My health.
    Good friends.

All you BEEs in the Hive, and the other peeps who post in the Triad blogs. You guys are like my extended dysfunctional family.

That I can run away from. ;) nah nah. You peeps crack me up. :D

And can't forget Queenie, Largo, and Braddah Lance for collectively setting up unique places for us to "hang out" and chill. It's a welcome respite from the real world.

I'm very thankful for what the blogs have given me. There was a time not very long ago when I was having some really hard times in my life, and the blogs were there to buoy my spirits and keep me going. So, a heartfelt thanks to the hosts and all the people who posted - you folks helped me more than you can imagine.

    *sniffle*

    Okay, 'nuff of dat.
Hope you all have a nice Turkey day!
    Hey, Feel Good Wednesday! :D

  22. Ynaku:

    Hey BF

  23. Ynaku:

    Hey Queenie,
Don't know if you remember I too was going through some hard times the past few months actually started 3 yrs but it came to a head about a month ago. Seems I wasn't getting the support from the people that should have backed me up. My wife helped me a lot but it affected her too.

If it wasn't for you guys, I don't know what my emotional condition would be. I'm an introvert. I hold things in. You guys let me bring it out. You guys make me laugh. I find this to be a group session.

For that I am thankful :D

  24. Ocean Lover:

    BF.................no worry........we stay.

OL..........."fist bumping" Banana......no wanna give him a hug cuz he might LIKE IT TOO MUCH ;-)

  25. myama99:

  28. visitor:

The material things are cool (winning cars, tickets, etc), but it seems that everyone here realizes that spiritual beliefs and family and friends will always be what's most important to us. I'm most thankful for family and friends and their good health.

    Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

  29. Shizah:

  34. BananaFysh:

Unreal the guy won 3 drawings just like that. The only thing I would win would BEE the phone call from the solicitors afterwards! :(

I can't even think of the best thing I've ever won in a raffle. $50 gift card? Something like that. Good enough for me!

Hopefully I get lucky this year and win my fantasy league. I know Queenie is cheering for me. She wants free fuud. She thinks if I win, she wins. We'll see. ;)

  35. opso:

  36. M:

  37. Ynaku:

hehe Shizah get's moderated and he comes back to win #29 by the chingy ching ching

This too funny. Gotta give credit to M for trying. Hey we all thought we were UP TO DATE BABY (Waltah Pacheco's favorite saying on da radio Hilo)

  38. Ynaku:

OK this supposed to bee #38
    We see if anybody moderated.

  39. munch:

    Good Morning!!

i am thankful for so many things but i find myself focusing on the bad days rather than realizing just how blessed i really am!

the holidays are always a big production and takes MAJOR "choreography" to figure out where we're gonna be and at what time for how long. tomorrow we've got 2 places to be for lunch and 3 place to be for dinner soooo yeah. it's crazy. gonna be busy with work (stop laughing, sometimes i actually DO work! :-P ) then leaving early to cook & bake for tomorrow's feast(s) ohhh i can feel the "i-overate-and-now-my-pants-are-tight-so-i'm-uncomfortable" feeling now! maybe i'll make a stop at Ross' and buy me a huge muumuu to wear tomorrow so i don't have to worry about the pants feeling tight after the festivities hahaha

busy BEE busy BEE! if i don't get to check in later on tonight or tomorrow, everyone have a HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!! and remember--it's not about the turkey & gravy, it's about taking the time to reflect and think about just how fortunate we all are...give THANKS to the Lord for blessing you so, and show your loved ones how glad you are to have them in your life :)

  40. Ynaku:

@munch Have a nice time. Yes we have much to be thankful for. We don't need a special day to let people know how much we appreciate them in our lives.

    Uncle Ynaku

  41. Shauna:

Good morning to the wonderful Hive! Can I join the sniffle fest? I would be no where without all of YOU!! I truly am so grateful that you enjoy this crazy place as much as I do. :)

Ukuhead: Woo-hoo! #1! Sorry no one was up to play with you...Sucks especially cause you missed snow by 10 minutes!!

M: Sorry, a couple comments were in moderation... If not, you were #29! OK, now let's see if you can get #77! :) It seems like you have a lot to BEE thankful for! You seem to have everything a man needs to BEE happy! Lucky you! :)

The Dork Knight: Thanks again! Do you really think you're unlucky? You gotta watch "Mean Girls" and find someone to turn your luck around! Hah! But seriously, I'm lucky that I got you exclusive on O&E!! Is it wrong to catch my jollies over that? ;)

Shizah: Yeah, I can't BEElieve you missed all the fun yesterday!!! Actually, lots of us still comment off old posts so leave your thoughts on that. I gotta go back on that one later today since I missed out on a lot of comments also. :(

visitor: I totally agree with you and I think that's why everyone on here gets along great. We see that a lot of us have very solid values and even though many haven't met yet, we can see the kind of character these people have. Either that or these ODD stories I find are a stark contrast to how much more common sense we all have! LOL! :)

Ocean Lover: Wow, you're a pretty lucky guy, winning all that stuff! Shouldn't that also mean you're lucky on the sea, making all kinds of great catches? And thanks for letting all the BEES lean on your shoulder to cry, I mean sniffle! :)

  42. honda si boy:

ahhh yes, i am very thankful for all that these honolulu advertiser blogs have given me! this is definitely a place where i can come and LAUGH!

ynaku: re: #22...uhhh, i dunno if you wanna hug BF...no offense BF, but i dunno if i wanna get myself close to those "teets!" hahaha, bumbye you might pull the mike tyson and bite my ear off or something!!! did you go see that dentist yet? hahahaha.

nah nah, let's all BEE thankful for something this weekend...no wait, we should BEE thankful for lots of things EVERYDAY! :)

  43. Shauna:

BananaFysh and Ynaku: I am still amazed that a blog has been helpful in getting you through some very difficult emotional times. If it is a place that truly lets you vent, share good and bad times, laugh your ... butts ... off or what have you, I'm so glad to have been a part of that. I never would have imagined it could BEE group therapy or something that could really help change you. And now that some of us have met IRL, we know we have made some lifelong friends.

And now that we know the power of a virtual world, let's hope it never comes down to this... There can only BEE one BananaFysh and Ynaku. BananaFish is allowed cause that's for the other blogs. ;)

    Lawsuit filed over virtual world
    UPI

NEW YORK, Nov. 25 — A lawsuit before a federal court in New York is testing just how much jurisdiction U.S. courts have over the virtual world.

Richard Minsky, an artist and publisher who operates in Second Life, is suing an avatar, which is a representation of a real person, along with two directors of Linden Lab, owner of the virtual world, over use of the word "SLART," the Daily Telegraph reported Tueday.

Minsky obtained a U.S. trademark in March 2008, but avatar Victor Vezina began an art gallery called "SLart" in Second Life in 2007.

In a 25-page complaint to the U.S. District Court of New York on March 16, 2008, Minsky's attorney, an avatar called Juris Amat, sent Vezina a "cease and desist" order that he failed to respond to, the newspaper said.

  44. BananaFysh:

@HSiB - Awww, you no like let me hug you too? :(

I got put in my teet' and just nibble on your ear then. I no bite like Mike. ;)

I'll also whisper Ezekiel 25:17 in your ear.

    hahaha!!

  45. Shizah:

    Banana, I'll take a HIVE 5.

  46. BananaFysh:

    Good Morning Queenie!

Missed you yesterday! :( So you were out shopping for most of the day? Wowsers! I hope you found something good for me. ;)

Who would have thought that my nonsensical, crazy comments were therapy for me? hehe Well, they were, so thanks again for affording me the venue. :)

There's something else I try to remember, along with BEEing thankful for what I have - when you encounter people - whether virtual or IRL, you never know what's going on in their lives. That one comment from you can either keep them going, or drag them down.

I dunno why, but I must have a "talk to me" label tattooed on my forehead. I've had random peeps tell me the most personal things, and share their problems with me. I guess it's easier to talk to a stranger? I dunno, I usually just stand there and listen. Hm, perhaps that's all they need, huh? A non-judgmental ear. MayBEE I need one of these "The Doctor is in" signs too. ;)

I try to BEE on the positive side, but sometimes I slip up. ;) Cannot help, only human, yeah?

@munch - two words for your Thanksgiving meal dilemma = ELASTIC. WAIST.

  47. honda si boy:

BF: ehhhh, you cool and all, but yeah, i go stand with shizah over dea, and take that "hive 5" and we can make up one cool secret handshake or something :) hahahahahah, brah, you crack me up! i think those "teet" gonna BEE enshrined in da hive hall o' fame!

  48. BananaFysh:

    @Shizah - Hive 5, comin' your way! ;)

I still gotta figure out who you are IRL. ;)

  49. Shizah:

Can you just feel the love in the air? Or should I say "in the hive".

  50. Shizah:

Am I #50? Am I the "new half?" Geez, that is so wrong.....

  51. opso:

munch - too bad no mo something like one muu muu for men. for when we like pig out......then no need loosen da belt. :(
eh Ynaku and OL......get to it! chop chop! ;)

BF - if you use your teets all da time.....den i'm preeetty shua that "talk to me" tat would disappear. ;)

  52. Rod's Big Bro:

    Hi all,
Since this is "odds and ends" try to figure this odd one out.

I posted to my Bro's site at 10:28, then looked at 10:38 and it shows my posting at 10:56, talk about time traveler "was up with dat" it isn't cause of "Mid Life Crisis" is it? Was that cool how I got all the Triad in on this?

Anywho's am really thankful to be around for another Thanksgiving, after nearly dying 41 years ago, a divorce, and a 16 realtionship that went bad, thought things sucked. What changed my mind was a little gathering downtown that made me see how many people there are out there that know how to have fun and made life seem so much better for me. And to that one girl that came in late, I still think you are hot!! muwahaa.

  53. snow:

first, to my fellow musketeer and SITC cohort, munch... just say "NO" to the muumuu!!! aigoo! no muumuus for you!! pu-leeeez...

second, thanksgiving plans... lunch at my in-laws and dinner at my sister's house. thankfully, don't have to do much cooking... just bring a dish or two and help clean up!

third, besides the normal things, i'm thankful for the opportunities i've had in life, that i've been blessed with (what i think is!) common sense and optimism. i'm thankful that i found this blog and this crazy but SWEET bunch of BBDs (aww... you guys going make me cry, too... or sniffle, too!), honeyBEEs, newBEEs and musketeers all led by our queenBEE, whose lighthearted and wacky comments make me laugh every day! i need my daily dose of O&E! the HIVE provides respite from this crazy world we live in! and, while it is addicting, it helps cure what ails us (or, at least forget about it temporarily... or is it temporary insanity?!!)! :) thanks qb for all that you do! :)

  54. snow:

Aawww man, Rod's Big Bro going make me cry, too! *sniff* But, welcome to the HIVE Rod's Big Bro!! Hope we see you BUZZing more often!!

  55. Ynaku:

Welcome Rod's Big Bro to da hive.

We neva meet (yet) But we all family here. You come join us in dis ODD place. You BEE surprised how it brightens the day. Good Fun! It's therapy. There is more to life. We da support group.

BTW, you like me hook you up with the Hot chick that came late to da party? She thought she could sneak in but neva know was the front door, that girl? Oops, sorry I don't know how to get in touch with her. I think was her in one of the pictures, but since I was still standing in the rain at Hilo Harbor waiting for da SuperFairy, I neva make it to da pahty.

As Official Hive Greeter, I welcome you to join the Bee Bee Dees, HoneyBEEs and the NewBEEs. 8)

  56. munch:

Hi! Rod's Big Bro! since he's Uncle Rodney can i call you Uncle Big Bro? hehe ;-) glad you can enjoy the insanity that we call the hive as much as we do!!!

and yeah, snow toooootally kidding about the muumuu....the images that keep flashing in my head are NOT pretty at all...and it's because all i see when i think of "muumuu" is Frank DeLima in his "for tutu-tutu-tutu" commercial LOL

ok so ATTENTION ATTENTION!!! if any of you crazy BEE BEE DEEs, honeyBEEs or musketeers are gonna be crazy nuts and hit ala moana on black friday, i have a "free valet parking" coupon and the "cheat sheet" that lists the discounts/sales that are happening at the stores. so if you want one, i can email it to you just umm...ask QB and we'll exchange emails? something like that we'll figure it out eh? :-D

  57. Ynaku:

@munch They get Valet Parking at AlaMo? Ho this Big Island boy don't know all this secret stuff. I just go around in circles (normal for me).

Nah nah. I no need coupons cause I do=unno when da SuperFairy going come get me.

  58. munch:

hey good job Uncle Ynaku for being on top of things with the welcome committee/Official Hive Greeter!!! :-D i think you deserve a raise *hint hint* or maybe she'll just forget about the 40 lashings with the wet noodle hehe

  59. Rod's Big Bro:

    Aloha all,
Thanks to the Welcome Wagon for making me feel so at home. Now I'm in a quandry (Big word huh, went to Kailua), who to visit first the Hive or MLC, but will add some words to all. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you, hope the surf is good tomorrow, and no I promise not to visit any emergency rooms (ref: MLC's the other day). Take care

  60. Ynaku:

Here's 2 unfortunate individuals that might not bee having a happy thanksgiving. MayBEE I should put this with yesterdays post.

Iowa fans cited for restroom sex during Gophs game
    1 hr 2 mins ago

MINNEAPOLIS – While the Hawkeyes were stomping the Gophers on the Metrodome field last weekend, police said two Iowa fans were having a romp of a different kind in a restroom. Both events, police say, had their share of cheering fans.

A 38-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man turned to a handicapped stall for their tryst Saturday evening.

On the field, the Hawkeyes were on their way to 55-0 trouncing of the Gophers. In the restroom, a crowd of intoxicated fans gathered to cheer the off-the-field event.

Eventually, a security guard tipped off University of Minnesota police. Officers had to interrupt the couple to cite them for indecent conduct, a misdemeanor.

Police Chief Greg Hestness said the woman initially gave a false name to officers. She was released to her husband and the man was released to his girlfriend.

Both people in the stall were intoxicated.

Don't drink and drive and by all means no do what they did. Have a safe Holiday Season gang.

  61. Shauna:

  70. Ynaku:

@Shizah When I saw that, I thought "oh oh, to the Doghouse they go" Now how do I keep finding these ODD stories? Gotta help our copy editor here.

  71. Ynaku:

  74. Shizah:

Ynaku:you still wayyyy off, but you got 69!!!!

  75. Ynaku:

I would be thankful if I could make it to the game.

  76. Shauna:

Ynaku: It is #313. My regular postings will continue as normal. And whenever that number is hit, we got a winner. Winner winner chicken dinner! Now who said that again? :)

Gotta go read some proofs on new movie openings now. What a job... ;)

  82. BC:

BF: Regarding making comments to people, let me share a story, don't know if it is true but nice anyways.

An art teacher received a letter from a former student. In it the student related how one day the teacher came up behind her in class while she was working on a painting. He looked over her work and told her he really liked the way she was progressing and he gave her a gentle squeeze on the shoulders. She went on to say that she had decided earlier to commit suicide that day but his encouragement really picked her up and she changed her mind. Now, years later, she was married and had a beautiful family and a good life and she wanted to thank the teacher for saving her life that day. The teacher spoke to a friend saying, "The weird thing is, I don't remember the incident or the student at all."

Remember, the littlest things we say can affect the rest of someone's life.

  83. M:

I got tickets for tonights VB game. Those seats are close by, I'm the next section over, lower level row 7, seat 1 and 2....

  84. BananaFysh:

Whoa! I walk away for little while and get all kine posts!

Eh Queenie, you whipping Ynaku up into a posting frenzy!

    hehehe. "Whipping." ;)

Aw man? VB tickets? Right after I go home too. :(
Gotta look for M & Masako on TV now. ;)

@BC - That's so true. You never know how your words might affect someone. It might not BEE as life changing as your story, but we all affect one another. Either positively, or negatively. I'd rather BEE the positive guy. ;)

@opso - hm, yes, if I wear the teet' full time, no one will bother me, ever again. Except dentists. They will take my picture for the "BEEfore" shot. And people with worse teet' than me. Like Japanee tourists.

As long as random people no come up to me on the street and go - "Eh, you da guy on dat blog, eh? Wit' da hagemoge teet'? Eh, you offend me on a daily basis! I going sue you fo' all da nightmares your pikcha gave me!"
    :(
    That would suck.

  85. NEO:

What am I thankful for? First, I'm thankful for the life I've been given. I'm thankful for my family, without whom I would be a withered mass of flesh, blood and bones. My friends, been with me through tough times, good times, bad. My job and working for/with such wonderful people. For this blog, and the people here on the blog, make the days go by quickly, and always bring a smile to my face, even when I'm down. :) <<you seen 'em?

You know, they say that it's "better to be lucky than good..." I say that's crap! To me, it's better to be GOOD than lucky... If you're good at what you do, you'll make your own luck. If you're good at what you do, good things will come your way. Most of all though, if you've got a good heart, good luck will shine your way as well. I know, as well as all of you O&Ers know that all of us here have good hearts... Maybe that's why we're so lucky.

I may not have all the money in the world, or the fastest car (or ANY car) I may not be the best looking, or have the best looking woman (or ANY woman for that matter) but I know that I've got a good heart, and maybe, just maybe, that's something to be thankful for...

    NEO(all pau being sappy and teary-eyed) :*( :D

  86. BananaFysh:

    Whoo-hoo!

My lanai is pretty much pau - sidewalk is BEEing poured now.

  98. Shizah:

Yeah, see...you not old. You still one BEEnager! (and young at heart no?)

  99. M:

  100. Ynaku:

  102. M:

  103. Shizah:

OOOHHHHH! Man jus wen miss em.

  104. Ynaku:

@M sorry I was typing real slow. I neva know we was close to #100. And I typing with one had while eating chicken with my other. Sorry sorry.

  106. Ynaku:

@Shizah Sorry sorry, I mess you up too. WAAAAAA!!!!

OL lay off the Flu-Mist!!! holy moly batman you're crazy! hahaha

better get plugs for your nose so you don't leak all your brains out!
and you know what else is a pain? when you get pimple on the bridge part of your nose and it hurts to wear sunglasses :( how come the ones that you no can really see but it's there...under the surface...seem to hurt more than those nasty funky looking ones?

Supposed to bee" You no can squeeze em"

  111. Ynaku:

I going go finish my lunch.

  112. NEO:

Munch, its' because the ones that are just under the skin push up against the skin and change the surface tension of the skin, so rather than just hurting one pore, they're actually stretching out several pores. I dunno if this is true, but that's my story and I'm stickin' to it. :D

    NEO

  113. Shizah:

    Ynaku:Cheers to dat!

  114. Ocean Lover:

    MUNCHEY!!!!!!!

You know where's a real problem "pimple wise".......the kind at the TIP OF YOUR NOSE and not "ripe" yet. MayBEE all red, yet not ready to POP UM and blast the mirror. Gotta walk around in PUBLIC trying to act like nobody's looking at it.........but you KNOW that that's ALL THEY'RE FOCUSSING ON. Go through a few days of that and one's "self esteem" gets lost.

My nose finally stopped running.............I tink I dum nau.

OL.........all his brain liquids leaked out

  115. munch:

butt boils. omg. :( yuck! now for sure no lunch!!! and then when i'm dealing with cranberries tonight i'll be thinking of you Uncle Ynaku haha ick!

  117. Ynaku:

    sowee :(

  118. munch:

you know what's funny...when i see people (ok girls) with those "unripe" pimpiles on da nose...and what to they do? they wear their big bug-eye sunglasses. :???: huh? i mean what do the glasses do besides hide your eyes? i feel like telling them "i can still see yooooou Rudolph! "

OL maybe if you scoop up all the brains that leaked out you can put it in your ching ching coinpurse and hold onto it until your nose stops running...then you can reuse the brains :-D

  119. Ocean Lover:

MUNCHEY...........I DON'T have a "CCP"......(I don't wanna mention that phrase in its entirety as I worry may get the BEE BEE DEES......the naughty ones......all riled up)

I asked my wife last night, "Eh, you know those squeeze um purses that we had as kids.....what do you call them?"

    She said "Coin Purse".......she missed a "C".............."CCP". ;-)

OL........shoved all his brain matter back in through his nostrils, sort of like a REVERSE BOOGER action

  120. BananaFysh:

I told my wife about the "CCP." She said she remembers that, but her lunch money was stuck on her with masking tape!
    Stuck to da shirt!
I guess was easy when lunch was $0.25. I dunno about now.

Next time she asks me for money, I should tape it to her too, for old times sake. ;)

  121. munch:

  122. BananaFysh:

  123. BananaFysh:

And on that note, since gotta keep it "PG," I not going say.

  131. NEO:

I once had a pimple on the outside of my nostril, you know, like where the nose meets the face? I couldn't smile, cuz you know, when you smile, your nose kinda scrunches up, buggah hurt like thell! and then when you pop em, buggah starts bleeding and it's just a bad thing all around. I've also had a pimple square in the middle of my forehead, not an unusual place, but it seriously looked like I had a bindi on my forehead.

Y'know what I learned about popping zits, is that you should never squeeze em. you should pull em apart, that way you OPEN the pore, as opposed to squeezing em where you close the pore off... make sense eh?

    NEO

  132. Ynaku:

Singer demands payment from Dr Pepper

    Nov. 26, 2008 04:58 PM
    The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - Axl Rose and the band are bubbling over with anger at Dr Pepper's botched soda giveaway.

The Guns N' Roses singer is accusing the beverage maker of profiting from the band's name - and then bungling its promised giveaway of a free 20-ounce soda to every person in America.

The soft-drink maker said in March that it would give a free soda to everyone in the country if the band's "Chinese Democracy" album were released this year. Notorious for being delayed since recording began in 1994, the album went on sale Sunday.

While the band finally made good with "Chinese Democracy," Dr Pepper did not, lawyer Alan Gutman, who represents Rose and the band, said in a letter to Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc. dated Tuesday.

The soda-maker's Web site malfunctioned during the 24 hours it offered the free pop to consumers on Sunday, causing many fans to get upset, said the Beverly Hills-based attorney.

"The redemption scheme your company clumsily implemented for this offer was an unmitigated disaster which defrauded consumers and, in the eyes of vocal fans, ruined' the day of Chinese Democracy's' release," Gutman wrote. "Now it is time to clean up the mess."

The lawyer demanded a full-page apology in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, USA Today and The Wall Street Journal; an expanded time period to redeem the soda; and "an appropriate payment to our clients for the unauthorized use and abuse of their publicity and intellectual property rights." He did not say how much was being sought.

"Had you wished to engage in a commercial tie-in with our clients, you should have negotiated a legitimate relationship," he wrote.

A Dr Pepper spokesman did not address the demands, simply saying it was "a fun giveaway" that the company took great steps to fulfill.

The company extended the promotion by 18 hours through 6 p.m. EST Monday, and set up a toll-free line and an interactive voice recorder to accept coupon requests because of demand, he said.

"This was one of the largest responses we have ever received for a giveaway, and we're happy we were able to satisfy the thirst of so many Dr Pepper fans," he said.

The dispute comes after rapper 50 Cent sued Taco Bell Corp. this year, seeking $4 million in damages and claiming the fast-food restaurant chain used his name without permission in advertising asking him to change his name.

The rapper was upset by a print ad run by the Mexican-themed chain asking him to call himself 79 Cent, 89 Cent or 99 Cent to help publicize its value menu. His real name is Curtis Jackson.

Count on TVs being cheaper past Black Friday

    3 comments Nov. 26, 2008 10:13 AM
    The Wall Street Journal

Good news, shoppers: This year, you may not have to get up at 3 a.m. the day after Thanksgiving to get a good deal on a flat-panel TV.

Television retailers and manufacturers always slash their prices on that day, known as Black Friday, to spur sales on what is typically the biggest shopping day of the year. Then after Thanksgiving weekend, prices usually bounce back to normal levels.

But amid a weakening economy this holiday season, there are signs that many of the discounts will stick around through the end of the year. That means shoppers seeking a TV could have several extra weeks of lower-than-usual prices to find the right deal.

"We're hitting a bad time, and I absolutely believe what's going to happen 1/8 is 3/8 we're going to see some very aggressive deals on Black Friday," says Riddhi Patel, an analyst with market-research firm iSuppli Corp. "Those Black Friday prices will continue all the way through December."

Indeed, some vendors and retailers have already started discounting their wares. Prices for 32-inch LCD TVs - the TV industry's most popular size - and 37-inch LCD TVs fell 2 percent during September, a month when there was no price decline last year, according to PriceScan, a price- and product-comparison service. In October, prices fell an additional 5 percent, compared with a 1 percent decline in the same month last year.

The Black Friday discounts will be even heftier, according to estimates. A 32-inch LCD TV will be discounted 54 percent to an estimated $399 in limited quantities on Black Friday from an average $875 in October, according to iSuppli. If those prices don't spur sales over Thanksgiving weekend, Ms. Patel says, many of the discounts will continue in December.

The price-cutting is being fueled by more than just the slow economy. Last year, some sizes of liquid-crystal-display and plasma TVs were in tight supply. Wanting to avert any shortage this holiday season, electronics manufacturers increased their output, counting in part on the February 2009 transition from analog to digital airwaves to boost TV sales. But the increase in inventory coincided with the onset of the economic slump, leaving the TV industry in a bind.

Bob Scaglione, a senior vice president at Sharp Corp., says he has never seen TV vendors bring back "doorbuster" prices - extremely low prices on specific items - after Black Friday in the past, but he's "not sure what's going to happen this year." Mr. Scaglione says Sharp has some broader promotions planned for the weeks after Black Friday, but he adds that those promotions are part of a longer-term pricing plan that hasn't changed.

In another sign that TV discounts will be more lasting this year, retailers such as Best Buy Co. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. are for the first time adding more promotional selling days between Black Friday and Christmas. For instance, earlier this month, Wal-Mart started its "Operation Main Street" initiative, in which each week the company will cut prices on certain products in electronics and other fields.

Best Buy, meanwhile, is for the first time offering special deals on TVs and other electronics to members of its Reward Zone loyalty program, starting the week after Black Friday and going through the holidays. For the first time ever, the company also extended an 18-month no-interest financing deal across the entire store for purchases of $500 or more for the entire holiday season.

Josh Will, Best Buy's vice president for home theater, says the company understands "the economy is tough right now" and adds that it's trying to provide confidence to its customers that they have the best value. Mr. Will says Best Buy's specific doorbuster prices on Black Friday won't resurface after that day, but shoppers will see other, similarly compelling offers on a wide range of TVs after Thanksgiving weekend.

Consumers who wait to buy until after the holiday season may be in for even bigger price cuts. In the past, the days after Christmas and the month of January traditionally have been good times to buy, as vendors discount their wares leading up to the Super Bowl, the most-watched television event of the year. This year, if slow retail traffic continues throughout the holidays, the post-Christmas discounts will be deeper.

Of course, there are downsides to waiting. Supply of some "doorbusters" is limited, so shoppers who wait too long could find fewer choices in some categories, such as TVs with particular screen sizes.

Plus retailers are dangling some attractive deals already. Kmart, a unit of Sears Holdings Corp., featured a 32-inch Osram Sylvania LCD HDTV for $440 earlier this month, for instance. Best Buy this month was offering a 32-inch LG Electronics Inc. LCD TV for $550, down from $800.

Michael Borges, a retired teacher from Westport, Mass., decided not to wait. Earlier this month, the 57-year-old pounced on a preholiday sale at Wal-Mart to purchase a 46-inch high-definition flat-panel television from Sanyo North America Corp. for $798, significantly lower than the average selling price for October. "I really don't enjoy waiting in line for any reason," says Mr. Borges. "I'm glad to have that out of the way."

Other shoppers are holding out for better deals. Brian Reinke, an engineer from Redding, Calif., is planning on buying his nine-year-old son a 50-inch plasma television for Christmas. But Mr. Reinke, who wants to pay $700 to $800 for the TV, says he hasn't yet found a deal he likes. The 30-year-old says he'll definitely shop for a deal on Black Friday, but "if Black Friday is a bust, maybe I'll wait," he says. "I don't have to buy it now."

  157. anklebiters:

    Shizah:

  159. Wade:

The other night I watched The Alamo with my 9 year old daughter (mom didn't know). As Gen Santa Ana's army overran the fort and brutally slaughtered the Texas defenders, my daughter asked, "why do people have wars...they're so stupid." I asked her what if someone said you couldn't go to school, choose your own profession, or even walk around in a mall on your own all because you were a girl? If someone tried to take those choices from you would you stand up and fight for it?

So to all our men and women in the Armed Forces, you have my gratitude for taking your place in securing all those things worth fighting for.

  160. HNL2LAS:

  166. Shauna:

anklebiters: That follow-up on the Dr Pepper story is interesting. So a lot of people DID go for that freebie!! Hey, I'm eating pork chops for lunch. Every time I make them they taste so dry. But don't you need to cook pork very well? I guess I have to BEE extra sure. :? Did you find out if that shop in Ward that Ocean Lover mentioned is the one? I've BEEn there BEEfore and they have lots of local candles...

Wade: Ditto that! Freedom is the one thing we take for granted since we are so used to it! So thanks to the U.S. military for keeping us and our families safe today and every day!

HNL2LAS: I wonder if anyone has actually farted out loud while reading about futs!! LOL! In your opinion, is it easier for men to fart out loud in public while women do the silent ones?? MayBEE we better not head there. Too off topic!

opso: So you ARE going to go to Best Buy on Friday??

munch: Happy Thanksgiving!! Enjoy your 5 get togethers and try to log on tomorrow!!

Shizah: Is today your day off? Or are you making up for your absence yesterday? Are you trying to win those tickets? :)

Ocean Lover: Was it the first 'Transporter' that had that cute Asian girl? I don't think she is in this third one though.

NEO: No more pimple talk. Too gross! Haha! And you were so close to hitting the number!! So whatcha cooking up tonight? :)

snow: Why do you say no to muumuus? Haha! Kinda curious to see what munch looks like. Thank YOU for helping me keep the BEES in line, tormenting Banana (oops, did I just say that out loud? LOL!) and adding your crazy comments. You alone equals 10 honey BEES so I'm grateful for that! Sniffle, sniffle! See what Ocean Lover started! Kidding!

honda si boy: Are you also grateful for good neighbors? ;) I'm sure Ynaku's ones are. Hah! So you're working on Black Friday, right? MayBEE you might see some of your new friends!! :)

myama99: Wow, sounds like you're going to have a fun party! OK, we will all gobble gobble! :)

BC: Thanks for sharing that heartwarming story. Can you imagine that the power of your one O&E comment can save a life? (Don't do it Banana, don't do it!! Kidding!) So thanks for always keeping things fun for us here while also giving us perspective on the bigger picture! :)

  167. opso:

Queenie - me? go shopping? on black friday no less? C'MON!! that's why i went yesterday. i guess you don't know me that well. :(

i BEE working on fri. might as well.....no mo nothing special happening.

  168. anklebiters:

Anyone going to the Craft's Fair on Saturday at Blaisdale?

You can simmer the pork for a while to soften it up...I don't mind it a little tuff. I haven't called them yet.

Anyone looking to buy a Sony model 350 Blu-ray player...K-mart will have them on sale tomorrow for $199 - $100 off regular price.

  169. anklebiters:

Speaking of the military...I was at the Atlanta airport restaurant waiting for my flight to PHX, this was during the march to Baghdag. There were two US marines sitting in the next table, from the sound of their convo, they were BF/GF. One was being sent to Iraq with the rest of his group. I had the waitress let me take care of their bill. As they stood to leave they thanked me...I said "we owe you many thanks for what you're doing over there. I hope you return safely."

Maybe for the 2nd Annual Triad Party, we can adopt-a-soldier and have him/her be the guest of honor? Maybe a dentist

  170. chawan_cut:

    thank you!
    and you!
    and you!
    and yes,
    YOU!

  171. NKHEA:

Happy Thanksgiving everybody :) gatta go to dinner now :D

QB; did you get my reply about the t-shirt's?

  172. BananaFysh:

@Shauna - there you go, tormenting me again. I think that's your favorite spectator sport, eh? Oh no, wait, you participate in that one as well. In fact, you get the gold. ;)

Aw man, I never get my Dr Pepper coupon! I was still on Oahu! :(

I did buy the Guns & Roses cd though. I'm with opso: meh. We waited all this time for THIS?!?! meh.

You know how to make pork chops? Pan sear it first. Then finish in oven. Stick the thermometer in to get it up to temp. Should come out moist. ;)

  173. Teejay:

Happy Thanksgiving everybody!!!! Teejay is thankful for many things but would like to take the time to thank all of you for the online friendship. Hope to meet each one of you soon! Go wahine!

  174. BananaFysh:

BEE back later Hive! Meeting a friend from the mainland for dinner.

    Then some RockBand! Yeah! :D

I'll check back later to win those tickets I can't even use.

  175. snow:

Yes, qb, listen to BananaFysh about the pork chops because I'm sure he's watched enough of Giada to know what he's doing! Oh wait, maybe that was Rachel Ray... 'cause if Giada's on, I'm pretty sure he's not paying attention to her cooking!! Hee hee...

qb - Muumuus have no shape or style! Too old farty darty! How can we be SITC girls if munch is wearing muumuu (muumuus and Manolo's - FAIL! ha ha!)??? No can, li' dat!! (but, munch, if you read this... I knew you were kiddddding! :) ) And, wow... I equal 10 honey BEEs?! I'm so flattered! But, how many BBDs to I equal???? Hee hee...

anklebiters - Ohhh, that was so nice of you! Many of us think about thanking the military but never really do it! You did it and that is awesome! (made me teary eyed!)

HNL2LAS - fellow musketeer, you are BEEEEutiful, too!! :) glad to have met you!

Happy Happy Thanksgiving qb, BBDs, honeyBEEs, newBEEs and musketeers!!

*getting grossed out by OL's earlier leaking brain episode!*

  176. Ocean Lover:

@ Queenie - "Was it the first ‘Transporter’ that had that cute Asian girl? I don’t think she is in this third one though."

Yes, I BEElieve so. Only thing, I must CORRECT YOU again. ;-)

She wasn't "cute". "Cute" is for lil toddlers or lil people.

    "She".............was HOT, HOT, HOT!!!!!!!!!

    Okay......time for "din din".

    OL.........."Mini ME" is "cute" ;-)

  177. anklebiters:

The HOT HOT HOT girl is Shu Qi  You should watch her in the Asian action film So Close.

  178. anklebiters:

The pork chops came out really tender...you could shred it with your fork :-)

  179. Shauna:

BananaFysh: Stick it in the oven?!? Then the juices might splash all over and get my oven dirty!! Don't know why but I only use the oven to bake. What a waste of a great stove! :(

chawan_cut: Aw, that's sweet! I'm thankful to YOU for coming on O&E more regularly now... I heard you're a sports fan. Of which sports?

Ocean Lover: OK, I figure it's better if I call another girl cute than hot. Plus don't you tell your wife as you're watching, "Oh that girl is kinda cute..."

Teejay: Hope you have some wonderful Thanksgiving plans! You know I'm thankful to you for all the support you've shown me way back when many didn't even know O&E existed... :)

NKHEA: You're doing some early Thanksgiving dinners? :) Yup, I got your reply! Thanks! Guess I gotta wait till after the holiday to call...

anklebiters: Wow, that's such a typical nice thing for you to do regarding the soldiers at the airport. I got this really warm feeling wash over me when I read that. Truly giving without expecting anything back is sometimes rare nowadays. Your idea about adopting a soldier is kinda cool... We really should look into that!

snow: Muumuus and Manolos!! Haha! Mini skirts and Manolos sound like a better match, yeah? I'm thinking we need to do themed outings... Imagine the photos that we could get from that!

opso: Oops! I misread this comment: hmmm…..i guess going get a lot of “bait and switch” going on on friday. I thought you said you were going to go on Friday... So Friday is not a holiday for you guys??

Ynaku: Where did you go? Did you overdose on that Coke and Snickers? Wake up, wake up!

M: Do you guys have season tickets for any other sports?

UH volleyball on TV! Teejay? Are you there? :)

  180. Shauna:

    #131: You're a volleyball fan! Are you watching? :)

  181. anklebiters:

    OL……….”Mini ME” is “cute”

Speaking of Mini Me...guess you can call him cute, his GF would agree

This is where anklebiters originated from.....

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdMRnh7WHlE

  182. Teejay:

I'm here watching the game and hoping the wahine can get their game going. Give Cal-Poly credit.

  183. anklebiters:

    Shauna:

That long sleeve pullover that I was wearing at Shokudo, my friend in LA did the embroidery for it....meant to show it to you but forgot...laughing to hard all night  You can thank the BEEs that were there for that :!:

  184. Teejay:

    Hawaii wins game one!!

  185. Ocean Lover:

Queenie.....I stand corrected and I agree. YOU have to say "cute" although to ME she's "HOT, HOT, HOT!" ;-)

Shu Qi? Kinda like "I don't care if her name is BIG LOOGEY.........she's still HOT, HOT, HOT!"

Watching the V-Ball.........the "intensity" isn't quite there as this is a meaningless match.

    OL..........."Hot, Hot, Not!"

  186. Ocean Lover:

    Anklebiters,

Your son in the video? Good looking buggah.

    OL.........on VACATION!!!!!!

  187. #131:

I just turned to it. Just got home a little while ago.

  188. Teejay:

    Come on wahine!

  189. #131:

If Cal Poly looses this game it is the coaches fault.

  190. #131:

He should've called it when they were up by one.

  191. Shauna:

anklebiters: Cool video!! I never really was into hockey but watching the footage made it look exciting! Couldn't really hear the announcers too well but what are the awards for? Top scorer and stuff like that? I'm not too familiar with hockey terms. I remember you mentioning a long time ago that you wanted to convert all your son's old videos onto DVD, right? How's that going?

#131 and Teejay: This other team must really BEE good. Usually UH is always leading!!

Ocean Lover: OK, we'll secretly say she's HOT HOT HOT! ;)

  192. #131:

The coach is super lucky that Houston was off on the last two points.

  193. Teejay:

Hawaii loses game two. I swear Houston is hitting bad tonight but then again Kanani isn't doing well and Aneli following suit. Might be a time to change setters.

  194. Teejay:

Aneli has had five or six shanks in the back row. They need to take her out.

  195. #131:

Can't blame the setter. She needs better passes. She is not Ah Mow or Kamanao where she can run everything down. Both setters are not to fast.

  196. #131:

    Where is Hawaii's Passing?

  197. Shauna:

    Teejay: Congrats on #188!

#131: thanks also to you for the company!

BananaFysh: So where did you guys head for dinner?

    Almost at #200!

Sorry, gotta head home now even though the game didn't end! It's been a LONG day!

    #197!! :)

  198. Coconut Willy:

What happened to the volleyball updates?

  199. anklebiters:

    OL:

That was him - Mini Me - he was about a foot shorter and 50lbs lighter than the rest :-)

    Shauna:

    Sportsmanship, MVP, Breakaway..

I'm still transferring them to DVD....I hope my camcorder doesn't break first :!:

  200. Coconut Willy:

    Too disgusting to watch?

  201. Coconut Willy:

    200! 201

  202. anklebiters:

    what's the volley ball score?

  203. Teejay:

Hawaii loses 25-19 in game four. Going to five.

  204. anklebiters:

    Oh my.....

  205. anklebiters:

    HSiB:

Your two favorite ppl's favorite - QB's Bon Jovi and my cars

  206. NKHEA:

Everybody it's "PARTY TIME" COhiba from big island is in town for one fast one on Friday, he's going to try to make it to Side St. at about 4:00 pm....who's in...me and IKHEA will try to make it...let's party again!!!!! :) :D :P even if only one fast-one :)

QB; shhhhhh, don't tell anybody, but was BD today so IKHEA and the kids took me to dinner ;)

(NKHEA feeling old :( but still like party  )

  207. Teejay:

    Hawaii wins!!!

  208. Teejay:

Boy was that match hard to watch.

  209. chawan_cut:

    Shauna,
i'm an all around UH sports fan. been so since i can remember. it was enforced when i was in the band, which i think you were in. or maybe your sister. i forget.

  210. Coconut Willy:

Thanks for the updates Teej. I'm working till 11:30pm

  211. Teejay:

CW: No problems on the updates. Hawaii has to come out stronger and stop playing to the level of their opponent.

  212. Shauna:

NKHEA: OK, I'm just going to whisper this: happybirthdaytoyou, happybirthdaytoyou, happybirthdaydearnkhea, happybirthdaytoyou!!! :) Hope you had a nice dinner with your family! :) Regarding the party, I would've loved to go but I'll BEE working at that time. :(

Coconut Willy: Congrats on #200 even though it wasn't a designated lucky number! Still a big milestone for one day's worth of posts! Woo-hoo! And the night is still not over. Hint, hint. ;)

Teejay: Wow, that must have been an exciting game!! So how come these tickets I'm trying to give away is for the same team?? Why are we playing them twice?

chawan_cut: Hmm, so you're a fellow former band member like us? What instrument did you play? Not sure if you attend most of the games, but BEE sure to check out tomorrow's post. Hint, hint. :)

anklebiters: Yeah, when I saw the post I couldn't help but think about all those Bon Jovi references we made. It's funny that as we read these stories, we can start finding people on this blog who the story was totally meant for. And I hope your camcorder doesn't break either. That's really touching on what you're doing for your son. Has he seen any of them yet or is it a surprise?

  213. Teejay:

Shauna-UH needed a team to play in between the WAC championship and the first round of the regionals or else they would've had to long a break and got rusty. Hopefully Hawaii will be able to host the first sub-regional but who knows with the stupid NCAA which wouldn't surprise me if they sent the team to Florida.

  214. NEO:

amen to that Teejay... Shauna, are you @ home and bloggin' from home? That'd be awesome!

  215. Shauna:

Teejay: So that Cal Poly team is just a filler and doesn't count for anything? And it's a team they don't normally play??

NEO: Yup, finally home after a long day! How was your day? :)

  216. Ynaku:

Shauna I stay. I WAS going nap but my Grand-daughter came over and that was that. Had a meeting right after then my wife wanted to go Walmart for some paper towels and stuff and just got home. Didn't eat dinner yet.

    Oh BTW

    Happy BEEday to you

    Happy BEEday to you.

  228. Shauna:

anklebiters: Hah! His GF gets to watch his videos? But at least he was a winner on the team so nothing to BEE shame about!

Shizah: Is it fair if I lower the winning number?

NEW COMMENT # TO HIT TO WIN THE UH TICKETS IS #241!
