Wanted: A stellar 2009 intern class
September 24th, 2008 by ShaunaBesides my full-time job as a copy editor and blogger, I'm also the volunteer intern coordinator here at The Advertiser. I started as an intern about 10 years ago and wanted to serve on the committee to give back to those who mentored me while promoting a worthwhile program I believe in. The summer internship program gives students a real taste of how a newsroom operates and is truly the best experience you can have if you are serious about working in journalism.
We are now accepting applications for our 2009 summer internship. So if you know of any aspiring journalists, feel free to pass this info on or have them contact me directly for any questions.

-----
So to stick with the intern theme, have any ODD intern stories to share? Whether you were an intern or had to work with one in your office, were there any unforgettable moments? I was told one intern a long time ago actually sat at her desk cutting her nails while loudly popping her piece of gum. Have you noticed the work ethic changing among students?
Were you ever selected to be a mentor for someone? Or do you still have a mentor that you constantly go to for advice? A former local TV reporter is the guy I credit for helping me get into journalism by making me realize the value of landing an internship. I respect him both personally and professionally and till this day we still get together to talk story and catch up.
In the spirit of charity for our future leaders, what's the best piece of advice you'd want to give an intern?

Eh, I like bee one intern!
Hm, not Shauna's intern though. I have a bad feeling about that...

"BANANA! Go get my dry cleaning! BANANA! Go buy me Korean fuud, right after you wash and polish my car! BANANA! Go back to Maui and get me more manju and mochi! Chop chop!" meep!
I think I would bee "mentored" to death.
Maybee BL need an intern? or Largo?
Nah, I would want the graphics internship. It's more in-line with my skill set.
Now, I know what you're thinking, "But BF, you are SUCH a great writer! That should bee your internship." Yes, you would think that, but I cannot have my "writing" confined by the shackles of journalism, and "truth." I need the freedom to inject my opinion in stories!
BWAHAHAHAHA!!! Aw, who am I kidding? I can't write. I'm too lazy.
So, for Shauna's intern, some advice: keep your head low, and buy her manju everyday. One caveat though - make no mention of "bowling pins" if you see some, uhm, "growth" after all that manju.
Oh, and call her "Queen." If not, she'll have your head, knave! Oh, and do stupid things every once in a while, so she has something to blog about. No worry! We don' t know you anyways.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:23 am
Shauna,
I believe that mentoring is a really good thing for the intern and you as well. Just remember that, whoever you intern, will probably come in, look at you, and think that you are really old.
September 24th, 2008 at 7:15 am
Yeah Shauna, they going call you Nana, Filipino aunty but we know you not Filipino although nothing wrong with that
I think all us Bee Bee Dee's can BEE your intern. Us write good stories. And us get you for check our spelling and gramma and stuff li'dat. I was photographer for our News writing class and yearbook in high school before you was born. I can go to your E&O night club and go take pikchas. So what? I can?

Starting with post #1, I could imagine hearing the gears in BananaFysh's creative head starting to turn.
The quote on my MySpace page says, "I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand." - Confucious
Sure when you're in school you need to read the textbooks, write the papers and do well on the exams. But to really learn, you need to work with a company and its people. That's where internships really help. I worked for a major local and international company during the summer prior to graduating from UH. I learned so much from them just during the three months I was that I was there. In fact, I eventually did work there.
On the flip side, I guess I mentor all the time - without the formal title. It may be a little out of your way or it may take a few minutes away from other things that you need to accomplish. But the little bits of advice that I can impart can get others pointed in the right direction toward achieving their goals. And doesn't it feel great to do that?
September 24th, 2008 at 8:38 am
I have trained new employees, I don't know if I'm a mentor to anyone. I'm in charge of purchasing and there's some specialty things that I order that no one else would know where to get it if I'm not around.
September 24th, 2008 at 9:05 am
Not anymore but I used to have high school student helpers and depending on their ability we taught specific skills and gave them experience that could translate to future job opportunities. I don't recall ever having a bad experience with the students. Most were willing to learn and worked hard. If anything, most lacked initiative but they teenagers, right?
It's fun seeing and talking to former students or players that I coached.
I still see on a regular basis a former student helper who is in his 30's already. We friends but can't help giving him fatherly advice on occasion, I don't think he mind.

Dear Ms. QB,
i really like to be an intern over there because i can type good. i promess if you hire me i will try not to come to work real tardy or fall asleep at my desk more thenn 2 times a week.
in fact i love to work because it's my most favrite hobby in the whole wide world! as long as i can take a brake every half hours i should be good. also Miss you don't gotta pay me alot lot i only asking for $35 each hour so i can pay for my drinking habit.
also i will take you to lunch 1 time (2 times if you pay) and we can talk story IRL but that's only if you hire me for intern job.
i dunno what the job even is or how to do it but i can try to lurn it and even if i not a fast lurner at leest i try kinda hard sometimes. my grammur is good and i kan spell to so maybe one day i can have your job? ok!
i don't like to talk about myself too much because i don't wanna make other coworkers look bad so i won't tell you that i grad top of my class at the adult learning center after only 3 tries. i is actually smart more then you think i look because don't judge a magazine by the outside. (i think thats is how it says).?

I have noticed that so many students today don't know how to learn. They may have memory skills, but they just can't think for themselves and problem solve. They expect to get a passing grade just for coming to class every day without making any effort to understand what's being presented. This is like the intern cutting her nails that you exampled. She expects to achieve her goals by just showing up. It starts at an early age, too. My son tells me the little ones he's in charge of in the afternoons have already learned to be helpless; they ask for the answers to their homework, not how to get to them. And it's not just the education system's fault; problems with learning are exacerbated by a lack of parenting at home. Parents don't teach or even reinforce learning skills. They don't oversee homework or schoolwork and expect the teachers to do it all. It doesn't work that way. Parents need to take responsibility for their kids learning, too. But their always too tired, or they need to watch TV or whatever else to take them away from being involved with their kids. It's sad and over just the last five years, I've noticed a major deterioration in the students' abilities and attitudes. Fixing things will be major-ly challenging as these kids today will breed their own kids with the same attitudes, or worse. Hard not to be pessimistic, but there is a ray of hope. I've seen past students that I thought would never be anything but prison inmates come back to say hi and proudly talk of their turnarounds and even those of some of their former freeloading buddies. A former professor I know once said that "kids today don't grow up until they're 28." Maybe nowadays, it's more like 32, but hopefully they will grow up someday.

oh yeah, just what i need, another job! haha. hmmm, let's see, i can cancel out BF's maui manju with some big island delights party mix and some two ladies strawberry mochi. i can cancel out anklebiters cost of living move since i'm on oahu. ynaku's photography skills going be hard to compete against but i see he didn't offer to wash and vacuum QB's car so i think i can one-up him on that. as for munch, i can do all that (the breaks, nap, tardies, etc. BUT, i'll do it for $34.95. deals huh? OL got me onn da speelling butt wit dakine wurd prosessing proggrams laik mycrosof word, no can maik da kine meestakes rite? plus i get additional intern experience. about 13 (yup, das QB's favorite number! i get better chance now!) years ago, i was an intern at the DWS in hilo. had absolutly nothing to do with writing, editing, or taking pictures, but was still on intern. and one paying one at that! heehee. i learned how to make coffee and buy donuts. and where to find good deals on good food. very important stuff! oh, and i can get all the FREE starbucks coffee for the break room!
wow shauna, you got lots of HIGHLY QUALIFIED people on this blog!
September 24th, 2008 at 10:37 am
goodbeer: ah, that one not so bad. i also hate the "your" and "you're" mix up. but my language arts skills are bad so i cannot complain. hahaha.
September 24th, 2008 at 10:45 am
Goodbeer: Good points. I agree that we have taught kids to memorize. They learn to take tests. What's missing is basic knowledge of the 'concept.' They know the answer, but don't know why it's the answer. And they don't know how to find the answer. But it's not really all their fault. With all the emphasis now on test scores they are taught to take test.
Work ethic is lacking today. But again it's how the kids were brought up. I call it the AYSO mentality...everyone plays and no matter how poorly you perform or unskilled you are, you did a "good job." And everyone gets a trophy. This is okay I suppose for little kids. But at some point you gotta be told when it's not a "good job" and you don't get rewarded for mediocre or poor performance. For their own good we should be honest with them. This mindset later translates to the new workforce, the worker's expectation is whatever and however I do...'good job' and you get paid. No more pride in work too...get away with the least effort.
September 24th, 2008 at 10:59 am
Good morning! Wow, definitely a lot of "qualified" people on this blog!!
So far, I think honda si boy (calling out QB on her mythical "twin") is in the lead. But he's not the ideal candidate yet cause I would prefer maui manju and I don't drink coffee! NEXT!
This wasn't the direction I was expecting this blog to take (wow, what a surprise! haha!) but let's roll with it! Send in your resumes to be my blog assistant/PR manager/secretary and all that other good stuff.
In true 'American Idol'-style, O&E readers make the final decision! Besides the intern pay rate, you will get free housing and transportation, free meals and the constant companionship of yours truly.
September 24th, 2008 at 11:06 am
A good intern is hard to find... heck, nowadays, a good employee is hard to find! No one likes to be told what to do anymore (are we stupid or what?)! However, it looks like you have quite a few candidates here... bet you didn't expect so many of them to try to jump the front of the line (I mean, come on, check out HsiB's oneupmanship... he has to get some points for that! Ooooh, munch and BC... getting mighty creative, too!)! Looks like some stiff competition so I'll refrain from throwing my hat into the ring (however warped that ring might be!).
We had a student intern here one summer who was an engineering major. Mind you, I don't work for an engineering firm, so I didn't know what he'd be interested in. Tried to teach him some things and give him some assignments, but every time I'd go over to his cubicle, he'd be sleeping!! Not arms on the table, head down kind of sleeping, but just asleep sitting up. Apparently, our work didn't interest him, to say the least!
Goodbeer - Isn't it amazing what your hands can do without your brain's "consent?" Drives me nuts... because you know better, but your hands just type whatever they want!
September 24th, 2008 at 11:07 am
shoots.....i like BEE your intern. only part time tho. and it's perfect since i'll BEE working nights....right? but you gotta give me time off for recon work on da weekends.
and also.....will work for BEEr! (Newcastle preferred)
i can BEE your galoot/garrute (sp?) aka personal assistant.
just no give me stuff that i gotta think. i like da kine brainless tasks only. cause that's what i like my part time jobs to BEE......mindless work.
and remember......i gonna BEE an "intern".......not the "pool boy"
September 24th, 2008 at 11:12 am
OK, on the serious side now before I address all those wonderful applicants, the internship, just to clarify, is a chance to be a full-time reporter or photographer or copy editor, etc. in the newsroom. They are not MY interns. I just coordinate the logistics of the program though I am on the committee that has a say in the final decision.
JindoMaster808: You're exactly right about how working with a company and its people is where you really learn about that industry. Textbooks and the classroom lessons only go so far. And regarding your "mentor" advice, I agree it can go a long way. Our mentors have been very valuable for the interns and many have continued the friendship once the internship ended. For the record, Curtis Lum was my mentor when I was a reporting intern.
Goodbeer: Great comments! Yup, parents really need to help reinforce what the kids are learning. Sure, teachers are the one responsible for the lessons but parents need to do their part. If students' abilities and attitudes are not up to par, we need to ask why. Are lessons not in sync with real-world issues? Does memorizing facts really help anyone out? Many kids are not self-motivated and those who don't get the inspiration early on to do good in school will just quickly fall behind...
visitor: I like your comments on when you need to tell a kid that they are not doing a "good job." False praise will only hurt the kid over time and they may be unable to cope with failure in the future. Everyone needs a healthy dose of criticism to improve cause there is always room for a person to be better. And regarding the workplace, it is rare to find workers who have pride in the company they are at. But why is that? Is it the fault of the leadership? The benefits are just not there for what you are getting paid? The work is not fulfilling?
September 24th, 2008 at 11:18 am
oh, couple more qualifications...i not scared of geckos and i can get discounts off of nice ladies' clothes for you QB. hahaha. oh, and you can forget that $34.95 pay...i'll just take that "twin" of yours. hahaha.
as far as how QB wanted this blog to go...i guess at some point in our lives, we all gotta train some people. might not be an intern, but new workers, seasonal help, rookies, etc. all need to be trained. in retail, that's not too hard. since i work stock, just gotta teach 'em how to count, be neat and organized, and bee a hard worker (although that's more them, not me.) as an office worker, just gotta show them how to use the computer and the database and small kine trouble shooting tips. as a barista, easy to make coffee and teach the newbies how to make steamed milk. as a teacher (future) i guess it'll be the biggest "mentorship" i will have to do. how to teach 25-30 students every year on how to be a model citizen and how to excel to the best of their abilities in the classroom and outside of school. hmm, that sounds ODDly like something BL writes about his baseball coaching...
September 24th, 2008 at 11:23 am
ok, one more post...shauna: you might not like coffee but how about tea? my work place has tea too. i'm sure i can get your past intern (kelli) to put in a good word for me then. hahaha. free tea for honolulu advertiser! oh, and not to mention lotsa free food. but ugh, i have to warn you, after working at that place for awhile, i got sick of all the free pastries and sandwiches. haha.
man, i can't top BF's maui manju...plus he has superb literacy skills...he is a cunning linguist. haha, you knew i had to go there right BF?!?!?! that literacy skills must be from watching princess bride one too many times!
September 24th, 2008 at 11:27 am
munch (wants to be an intern!): For the record, you were my favorite before honda boy tried to one-up ya! Despite the glaring errors (I really tried to look past them), your cheapness (your lunch offer) and demanding-ness (ridiculous hourly pay), I still was going to "take a chance" on you because I can sense that fire burning within you and have a feeling you are going to do the best you can with what "abilities" you have! Sorry, OL!! You know how America roots for the underdog!
anklebiters (Occupant): Hmm, your resume looks not bad. Good references. Seems like you have a lot of experience. And payment plan is no problem. I happen to sit near the central area where all the omiyage or free food goes (imagine my horror as I see folks dropping crumbs from all the goodies near my desk! grr!) so I'll make sure to grab you some extra food every time. So you make the first cut. Prepare for your phone interview.
BananaFysh: What, you getting BEESP again? How did you know I always say "chop chop"? So funny! Too bad you weren't interested in that position because I'd love to push you around. Haha! And what "bowling pins" are you talking about?
Ocean Lover (I like BEE one inturn): Hey, if you can do math, maybe BL could use some help. I'll toss your resume down to him.
Ynaku: Yes, photography skills are very important. As you are fully aware, here at The Advertiser we push multimedia skills. So when you are out taking a photo, make sure to get several so we can create a photo gallery. Make sure not to just take shots of girls in bikinis, but guys also!!
BC (I like try!!): Hmm, I need someone to translate for me so I'll get back to you!
opso: This partnership has possibilities. A night shift works well for you. Good, good. Of course you will get time off for recon work. Plus I know you will multitask and do some PR for QB while you are there (remember, the group discounts?). Brainless and mindless tasks? Hmm, getting food and killing a stray gecko or so shouldn't be too taxing on your mind. Wait for your phone interview.
September 24th, 2008 at 11:33 am
Wow. What kine guys get on the B.I.?
September 24th, 2008 at 11:38 am
snow: Since you are not applying, how about as my musketeer you help me review the applicants? A second opinion is always good. Gotta make sure the voting public gets the "best of the best" before they vote, right?
I can't believe that intern would actually be sleeping!! What did you do? Slam something down near his face so he would wake up in a panic?
That is just terrible!!
hemajang: That's good you had a lot of positive experiences. I'm sure they appreciated all they learned with you. And I think fatherly advice is good cause we all need that now and then. It also offers a different perspective on what we may be getting from our own parents.
honda si boy (calling out QB on her mythical "twin"): Hmm, you are even climbing higher in my book now. NOT afraid of geckos, clothes discounts and not even needing pay! I'm picky on tea but I can see you're trying. How about hot chocolate with just a little whip cream? You can throw in some pastries now and then. And it sounds like you do a good job training. But yes, the biggest challenge is when you're a teacher. I know many of us probably remember a favorite teacher just because of how good the lessons were. You can be a source of inspiration for generations to come and are shaping our future leaders. The world is in your hands, honda boy! Don't let us down!! Hope you perform well under pressure!
M: So what happens when you go on vacation? Work in that one area stops since no one knows how else to do it?
POLL QUESTION: WHEN YOU GO ON VACATION, DOES YOUR WORK PILE UP OR DOES ANOTHER STAFFER DO IT?
Luckily for me, I don't need to worry about anything cause every night a full shift is in to handle the next day's paper...
September 24th, 2008 at 11:39 am

i like work under u, I mean 4 u, i no can spell, no can write guud, i can type wit 1 finga. i guud at eating, dats fuud, i know lots of guud place to go eat lunch, i no drink coffee 2 just like u. let me no ok?

If I was going for the intern position, I'd offer Queenie onions. Raw onions, grilled onions, pickled onions, sauteed onions, roasted onions, onion rings, bloomin' onion, french onion soup, onion gravy, and wasabi Funyums.
Do I get the job?
September 24th, 2008 at 11:44 am
shauna: haha, i like how you have your desk right where all the crumbs are. that is text book definition of ironic huh? do you have a dustbuster charging under your desk by any chance?
"chop chop" 'eh? that's pretty funny. as for the bowling pins...think about the shape of them.....
and "tossing" a resume to BL...is that "nice shauna" speak of saying "crumpling up into a wet spit-ball and trying to beam BL in the noggin with it?"
and are you seriously gonna make ynaku take pictures of "guys in bikinis?" haha. that's what it sounds like. haha.
September 24th, 2008 at 11:51 am
rodney: shauna just mentioned how her desk is in the middle of the room...and you want her onion smell to permeate throughout the entire work place? haha. i feel sorry for you guys! (unless you sit far away from her, then lucky for you!) i think you should try to get shauna to dress up as a raiderette for halloween.
as far as my work goes, there's pretty much other people at my work places that can handle somewhat if i'm gone. (other managers, baristas, office workers). but then i heard stories of some people being scared to train others so they had more "job security." that's kinda touchy area yeah? one person i used to sorta kinda know had to learn almost everything on the job since the person before didn't do a great job training and was hesitant to teach anyone else the job. that had to have sucked.
September 24th, 2008 at 11:57 am

Wachu meen u gotta get translation!
Jus stand up and read um out loud.
I usually go on vacation when my work stops. I'll let you figga dat one out.
September 24th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
Shauna, when I'm on vacation, no one really takes over for me but they do what they can and what they can't do they leave it for me. It's mostly the paper work stuff that is left for me to do. That's what I hate the most when I'm on vaction, knowing that when I get back to work, there's a huge pile of paper work waitng for me and other things I have to do that they couldn't do.
September 24th, 2008 at 12:32 pm

shauna: what's the outlook on cute single women working at the advertiser? hahaha.
September 24th, 2008 at 12:51 pm
as far as my favorite teacher (sorta like a mentor, right?) i have to say it wasn't really the lessons they taught, but more of the rapport they had with me and the rest of the students. i guess to some extent, HOW they taught the lesson (making it exciting and relevant) helped too. thank you for your vote of confidence. i sure hope i can make it as a teacher. i really can't wait to kick elementary school butt on the 8 foot tall basketball rims and be the undisputed champ at dodgeball!!!

September 24th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
Hmm, this is getting tough.
Big competition just landed!
#131: Since there are exceptions to every rule, English is not absolutely necessary in your case. You have talent with your sexy voice (you could do my radio ads) and your incredible hotness (definite plus for my TV ads) is sure to benefit the QB team in the long run... You're definitely at the top of my list so far. But just to be sure, send in more photos and other video clips!!
TO IMPROVE YOUR CHANCES, SEND IN PHOTOS!!
munch (made some revisions): Wow, girl, you keep impressing me! You're right up there with #131. PINK DUSTBUSTER (i'm so excited i could cry!), pie (we can pass on the onions for this one!) and gecko repellent!! Learning to adapt to any work environment is key to success.
honda si boy (calling out QB on her mythical "twin"): You just got downgraded. Asking about cute, single woman? All your attention should be focused on your boss. Tsk, tsk!
Students now days!!
M: I kinda like you, too. You seem to be a sincere and hard-working man who knows how to please. We can chat over lunch and green tea.
Ynaku and Rodney: Equal opportunity! Kidding! I meant guy in their swim trunks...
Rodney: Ooh, raw onions!! I'll share with you also! Haha!
opso: Kitten onions? Haha! rrrwwowrrr! We like that!
BC (I like try!!): I'm trying!

I vote for OL. Me and NKHEA going sit and watch while drinking beea and eating poke and opihi. No, we going keep da mochi manju away from da snack table. Hey NKHEA, as one idea, we go open one concession next to QPP's desk. Ho going make uku pila money.

September 24th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
Hi Shauna.
Answer to poll question - Yes. My work piles up when I'm on vacation. Urgent tasks get taken care of, but the rest waits for my return. E-mail is the worst. It takes almost a whole day to go through all of my e-mails!
I was lucky to have an intern for a couple of summers. Both were students at UH Manoa at the time. The intern from the summer of 2007 was a transfer student originally from Ohio. I think we all learned a lot from each other. My job is in sales. The interns were hired to help me increase my productivity.
Although I didn't get the spike in production I anticipated, I learned a lot from their efforts. I learned what types of activities did not work. And I learned that you can't teach 20 plus years of sales experience in 3 months.
Still, 3 months is plenty of time to form a relationship. Both interns were well received in our office and we still hear from the intern from Ohio now and then. She has graduated and is now working in Ohio.
It's kind of funny. I might be wrong, but I think the highlight of her internship was talking to Jack Johnson on the phone (he's one of our clients).
September 24th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
ynaku and nkhea: hey, you should buy one of those old school bicycles and load up a little box on the back and sell your food to all of us. hahaha. you know, like those vendors you see on the streets in all the asian countries. come by my school during the day and my other job at night. and then book it back to the HA building for QB.
yanku: wow, you get opihi?!?!?! 'eh, sharing is caring brah! haha. man, you remember those old school lu'aus and get togethers at 7-seas lu'au house in hilo? people would always have choke opihi and my favorite, those tiny freshwater opae that would turn bright red after you cooked 'em. mmmm, good stuff. you don't see that anymore. can still get opihi and people still make some mean squid lu'au, but no more of that opae. sad times.
September 24th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
qb... sure, i can help screen your applicants!! right now, munch and HsiB definitely have the edge! i have to give HsiB a little slack for his mistep... afterall, you can't put a guy down for trying (and you know, his car has a new boo-boo - poa ting!)! he must be thinking out of the box and definitely has a lot to offer (free food! gonna be a teacher... hey, lots of points right there that he can use against munch's offer of a PINK DUSTBUSTER!). munch, uhh... i'm not even sure how she can type like that with one eye closed and all... so gotta be creative, right? she is definitely "trying hard" (got the bases covered - geckos with STDs, pie, onions, and she'll work for chocolate covered nuts or honey!) so gotta give points for that too! The others... ahh, not sure what OL's resume looks like, he's just buttering (honey-ing???) you up! opso... not sure what his qualifications are either... but you could use someone at night too, huh? BC... uhh, send your translator over when you're done! (sorry, I didn't have a chance to stand up and read 'em yet!)
as for our intern, if he was sleeping, i'd walk back to my desk and walk over again loudly! if he didn't wake up, i'd knock on his cubicle... "uhh... good morning!" he was otherwise a very good kid, so i hope he is a successful engineer!
NKHEA - you crack me up - "honda boy; you good at typing wit your eyes closed man you do your best work in the dark.. eh" (but, i don't get it???
heh.)
September 24th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
Wow, I sure missed out on all the applications!
So, do I still have the "Maui Manju" in my favor?
A plus for me, is I can take abuse. Look how often I get spankings over here! Not a problem though. 3 words: Buns of Steel. (And I can count, also)
My BEESP must bee firing on all cylinders! HA! "Chop chop!"
Gosh, that hidden microphone sure is paying off! I mean, uh, uhm, never mind. Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!
@HSiB - oh ho, my reputation as a "Cunning Linguist" precedes me! I learned from my mentor, Colonel Angus. I trained with him in the deep South, where it was very damp and humid. I developed a slight case of lockjaw, but I made a full recovery.
Oh, uhm, I know nothing about any bowling pins.
September 24th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
I guess I'll have to pull my ace card out on all of you....I didn't want to have to do it....we all must fight fair and square....but I can't take a chance...tooooo many qualified resumes being presented.
Hey look, Queenie has one for every day of the month and in her color too
Just imagine being TOPLESS in one of these

September 24th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
Shauna, also when I'm on vacation, I still check my emails with my laptop even when I was in Japan because I get choke emails everyday. So I'm still sort of working when I'm on vacation. If I can take care of it by email I'll anwser it, otherwise I'll wait till I get back to work.

September 24th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
I think internships are important to get your foot in the door of whatever industry you're interested in, but they are also great at giving you an idea of whether or not the book work translates into the real work.
I did three internships while I was in college because I basically didn't know what I wanted to do once I graduated. I put in some time at an indie paper, an animal shelter and a lit publisher and usually did a lot of the writing/PR/marketing-type stuff.
They were all quite unique environments to work in but were great in their own way. It gave me an idea of what the "real world" was like and what kinds of places I did/did not want to work at once I found a full-time job.
September 24th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
NKHEA - "I still get all my teets" - You still have all your WHATS?! You getting me CONFUSED!
Heh heh... (I was kind of scared to open anklebiters link, too... ha ha)
anklebiters - Wow, that's some ace card you dealt! Now, what are the others going to do to top that??? (Psst... hey, what about the rest of the musketeers (you know, we have qb's ear!)????)
September 24th, 2008 at 3:56 pm

September 24th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
@skycastles - That's a very good point. Internships can also help us to find out what's not right for us. That works to the company's benefit, too. Even if things don't work out, we take that experience with us and learn from it.
September 24th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
Hey PEEple,
Did you folks hear that Clay "GAY"ken FINALLY "came out of da closet"?
I KNEW IT! My "gaydar" was going nuts the very first time I heard him sing.
NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT yet why didn't he just ADMIT IT years ago?
Now he has a little baby and he said he did it through "in vitro" meaning he put his "da kine" in a test tube as he didn't want to put his "da kine" in "da kine".
(Back to the regular programming)

The above that I wrote came from:
http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20228488,00.html
GOOD JOURNALISTS (hint, hint) document their news stories and its not built on sensationalism, innuendo, or warped minds (you heard dat Banana?)
Anyways, I'm looking for "extra credit" on my quest to BEE Queenie's intern...unless YNAKU's and NKHEA's beea is FROSTY COLD and if that's the case I'll vote for MUNCH to bee the intern.
OL....budding journalist, poet laureate, and Wendell's Friend
September 24th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
whoa... dat took me a long ash time to write bahaahhaa....get planny more posts now....kay serious (kinda) now....
I've never had to mentor anyone, but I have had to train quite a few people in my past jobs. Hmmm a couple of them did rely on me quite a lot afterwards and made it sound like they considered me their mentor! heehee, does that count?? haha... Or had people tell me that they tried to think like me in an interview, or with other people?? Hmmmm.... actually that's kind of scary! hee hee...
My own internship was great! I went to Disney World! hehe....

munch - how many votes did you count for yourself? 497, right?
(heh heh. qb - will have to do an - ahem - "unbiased" tally after dinner with the girls tonight!)
September 24th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
@#131 - ai goo! 2 minutes too late!
You had a good shot, but you know, rules is rules.

Shauna:
NKHEA, Ynaku, snow - there's plenty of yellow ones to pick from
They were all used at the Indianapolis 500 as courtesy cars.
Here's to the Queen Bee - Killer Queen by Queen
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMz-wi50ACU
She keeps Moet et Chandon
In a pretty cabinet
'Let them eat cake' she says
Just like Marie Antoinette
A built-in remedy
For Khrushchev and Kennedy
At anytime an invitation
You can't decline
Caviar and cigarettes
Well versed in etiquette
Extraordinarily nice
Chorus:
She's a Killer Queen
Gunpowder, Gelatine
Dynamite with a laser beam
Guaranteed to blow your mind
Anytime
Recommended at the price
Insatiable an appetite
Wanna try?
To avoid complications
She never kept the same dress
In conversation
She spoke just like a baroness
Met a man from China
Went down to Geisha Minah
Then again incidentally
If you're that way inclined
Perfume came naturally from Paris
for cars she couldn't care less
Fastidious and precise
Chorus
Drop of a hat she's as willing as
Playful as a pussy cat
Then momentarily out of action
Temporarily out of gas
To absolutely drive you wild, wild
She's out to get you
Chorus
Recommended at the price
Insatiable in appetite
Wanna try?
You wanna try.

Ack! My brain hurts!
anklebiters: Thanks, I think, for the Queen Bee song and love the topless picture!! I like, I like!
wendell: PASS! Oh wait, your uncle is the kine... Let me reconsider...
Neon Zebra: That Banana guy is your reference?? That's not good for you. Why don't you work on your mackin and apply again next year?
#131: Yes, you are still in the running. You're still one of my favorite!
snow: 497 votes for munch sounds about right. That's because I've been getting some direct e-mails with "my vote is for munch."
September 24th, 2008 at 7:09 pm

September 24th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
HNL2LAS: Wow, you got to go to Disney World for your internship? Were you happy happy the whole time?
skycastles: Yeah, there's nothing wrong with finding out that the field is not something you think you want to do. Many students have this idea on what a job is and have no clue exactly what goes into it. Companies who offer internships should be applauded for taking risks while helping a student with his/her career while also getting some extra help. Lots of the other workers seem to also be quite helpful to the interns...
Reido: That's great that YOU can actually learn from an intern. It sometimes takes a total outsider to look at the situation objectively for you to see what works and what doesn't... We've also been seeing that a lot of interns want more feedback to see how they can improve...
September 24th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
honda si boy (calling out QB on her mythical "twin"): Haha! Go for it! I think I can apply again, but I don't know about interning with 18 credits.
Shauna: I heard some Advertiser people will be coming to my journalism class. That should be interesting.
September 24th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
hey hey......what! no more resumes BEEing taken already? AIGOOOOOO!!!!
my treat!
oh no.....and i see get some "Sybil" syndrome going on.
#131 - Dennis Oh.....FAIL!
aggashi - i think you broke the mold for being the "model" intern. NOW how is anybody supposed to follow you. aigoo....
September 24th, 2008 at 8:31 pm
QB aka QPP; I don't know were you and snow wen learn how to count, remind me neva to buy anyting from you two
honda boy; were are you washing car, studying or working
you going miss your roll call fo da job
Ynaku; were you stay
drinking da Beea's and eating da poke
you wen go pick da opihi eh
snow; Did you figa out what "do best work in the dark" means yet
teets is da stuff you chew your food wit
September 24th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
Kelli: Yup, repeat applicants are always accepted!
opso: Your treat? You're a sly one! Neon Zebra also promised me a stake!
NKHEA: Heh heh! But maybe you can rip us off since we suck at math!
September 24th, 2008 at 11:14 pm
crap, leave it to my other job that i missed the deadline! well there goes my chance at having to be shauna's slav---err, i mean dedicated intern. oops! looks like i have to expend my car washing, food bringing, drink toting, paper organizing, gecko catching energy some where else!
wow BF, that's some mean credentials on your linguistics' talent!
darn, i think kelli got the inside connections already. hmmm, but 18 credits? can...just gotta get creative...you know, hide under the desk at work to do homework, car pool to school and work and do your reading in the passenger seat, give up couple hours of sleep, and no party on the weekends. haha.
whoa whoa whoa, snow treating dinner? sucks, if i knew that, i could have rounded up the boys and crashed the party! haha.
#131: oh man, took me forever and a day to read those comments! haha. hmmm, kinda sounds like you're drunk.......nah, cannot BEE right? heehee.
September 25th, 2008 at 12:19 am
Bahahaha... happy happy the whole time at Disney World? uhhmmmm nooo shmall kine shlave labor hehe... but was fun..It's not quite the happiest place on earth all da time.
Hey Snow: I counted 497 for Munch too! But ehhhhhh..... I missed da dinner! I neva get da memo!!!!
September 25th, 2008 at 12:57 am
Hey nobody wen call me fo dinna. I like eat stake 2. Good with my beea, poke and opihi.
September 25th, 2008 at 1:02 am
BF - recount, shmecount... but, just to appease you (bah! you know that won't happen often! heh heh... ), i counted again and it's a good thing i did! thanks to you, i found out that i missed 2 more votes for munch! she's at 499 now! so... i'm grateful to you, BF, for alerting me to a potentially unfair situation!
opso - hey, i said meet us at the old spaghetti factory, not hooters! i guess you owe me and my girls dinner now... and if you want to treat HsiB and his friends, too, i'll let him know!
NKHEA - "teets is da stuff you chew your food wit" - how can?
and da udda one... how can? and, what, you wanted to buy stuff from me and qb?
qb, as you requested, here is my internship applicant vote accessment:
i promise (cross my heart!) that i was as unbiased as i could be... and you should have full faith in me because i work with numbers daily, so this is my type of job! i do, however, suggest you weight the votes based on our evaluations of their resumes, including any pictures which may have been submitted.
Neon Zebra: (+1 vote)... oh wait, qb, BANDANA is his reference. make that (-1 vote) from me.
munch: (+499 votes)... thanks to BF for asking for a recount! (AFOOFA, munch! oops, nobody heard that, right?)
BC and #131: (-17 votes)... received -1 vote from each person who had to stand up and read the posts OUT LOUD.. but maybe -16 votes were for #131. heh heh.
OL: (-4 votes)... received -5 votes for being wendell's "friend" (FAIL!) and +1 vote from Ynaku.
wendell: (-10 votes)... received -2 votes for every drug bust... no can! oh wait... uncle lee????? change that to (+20 votes).
anklebiters: (+300 votes)... received uhhh... LOTS AND LOTS OF VOTES FOR NO REASON THAT I KNOW OF.
BananaFysh: (0 votes)... world renown cunning linguists can't get into intern positions.
HsiB: (-5 votes)... received -5 votes for tardiness (timeliness is akin to godliness, right?)... may need to intern under BF, oops, I mean, FOR BF.
M: (0 votes)... not sure if he's qualified... need to know if he can do anything else with one finger besides type.
qb, please let me know if i can be of further assistance.
September 25th, 2008 at 1:28 am
HNL2LAS - please confirm new count of 499 votes for munch. uhh, but no need check the count for anklebiters... i know his one is okay, for sure. FOR SURE, I SAID.
munch - please confirm new count of 499 votes for you. just check yours' one, 'cause you leading. anklebiters count is good to go... yeah, yeah, that's it... GOOD TO GO.
thanks fellow musketeers!
AFOOFA!
September 25th, 2008 at 1:32 am

WOW
It must have something to do with the color yellow and being topless
I'm going to ask for a sabbatical next summer...
VP: Sabbitical? What will you be doing?
Me: I thought I'd try being a technical writer...you always complain about us not documenting extensively. I'll pass on my learned skills to the rest of the group when I return. Reviewing Mexican restaurants is uncharted waters there, I'll be great at that..no Taco Bell FUUD reviews from me.
VP: Hmmmmm...that sounds like it'll be a great contribution. What is FUUD? Where exactly will you be taking your sabbatical?
Me: I thought I'd try my writing in Hawaii...you know they have a shorthand for the English language called pidgin. The master of the pidgen language lives there. I could learn a lot from Brother Lance..actually he's not a priest or anything like that. I think he just got tired of people calling him 'hey brah' ...means something like 'hey bro'. They seem to spell 'food' as 'FUUD' and always have pictures of what they eat. I can't see a Big Mac as being appetizing by looking at a picture I had taken of my meal. Their pictures are so lifelike, all that is missing is the aroma of the food.
VP: Hawaii?? I had my honeymoon there. Nicest people you'd ever meet...they would thank you for letting them merge into your lane. Never see that stuff around here. I loved their Zippy's Zip pack. Shorthand huh? More information packed into a smaller space...that would work. We would save $$$$ since we won't have to purchase 500 terrabytes of disk storage for our documentation.
Me: I'm always thinking about this department. Besides, I hear that their strawberry daifuku is ono.
VP: Ono ??
Me: I think it means it tastes great..I don't know about less filling thou.
VP: So who will you be interning for in Hawaii?
Me: For a newspaper called Honolulu Advertiser...seems all of their writers have their own blogs. Our school's bloggers could learn a thing or two from them. The Queen of the bloggers lives on the isles too. She comes up with some very interesting topics daily. I also relive my younger days on the MLC blog...you'd think the baby boomers memories are under lock and keys with the keys nowhere to be found...not a chance, they are like Google, they never forget.
VP: Are you bringing Chatty Smith with you? The last time I saw her, I said Hi, and ended up talking for over an hour..I can't remember what the topic was either. That woman just loves to chat!!!
Me: She telecommutes from home so her boss won't know she's in Hawaii. We'll just have another honeymoon in Hawaii. She insists that you have to be married to have a honeymoon...I say, if you're in Hawaii, it's a honeymoon, married or not.
VP: I agree with you, call it a honeymoon. Sabbatical APPROVED. Just be sure to bring back one of those hula dancer dolls so I can put in on my dashboard.

snow: You did such a wonderful, fabulous, detailed job in tabulating the numbers I'm sure it's perfect and there will be no call for a recount! So our winner is... wait for it, wait for it..... MUNCH!!!! Go munch, go munch, go munch! (AFOOFA!!!)
Maybe runner-up anklebiters can plan our congratulatory luncheon. We can invite all the "non-winners," of course.
munch: Don't forget to share your thank-you speech here on the blog!!
anklebiters: Ooh, sabbatical approved?? That Hawaii place does sound like paradise.
I hope your vacation coincides with BF's possible trip here in November. If so, we definitely need to plan a get together.
