Baby, say my name

June 15th, 2008 by Shauna

What’s in a name? For some, it could change your destiny. For others, you’re just another John or Jennifer.

How important is it to have a name you like or can identify with? If you have a “feminine” name, do you feel that you need to alter your personality to fit that image? I somehow can’t picture a gruff-sounding Daisy or a tough jock named Gaylord. Can your name affect your self-esteem during your journey into adulthood?

Would a Britney or Paris have a hard time achieving CEO status? How would you feel about a president named Brody or Tucker? Here’s a fun site that pokes fun at names and why they may not work. I’m happy to report my name wasn’t on the list! Although a few baby names I liked were on there…

Speaking of which, how difficult is it to choose a baby name? I know young parents like to get creative and put a twist on spellings. Do you think that works or is that just too trendy?

Well, for the most part, we’re stuck with our names. Or you can go the route of this man and change it — to something even more unique.

Illinois man changes name to ‘In God We Trust’
Associated Press

ZION, Ill. — A school bus driver and amateur artist from the Chicago suburb of Zion has legally changed his name to “In God We Trust.”

A Lake County circuit court judge approved Steve Kreuscher’s (CROY’-shirz) name change petition on Friday.

The 57-year-old’s first name was changed to “In God,” while his last name was changed to “We Trust.”

He says the new name symbolizes the help God gave him during tough times and says he can’t wait to begin signing his artwork with the new moniker.

And going back to baby names, if you prefer to stick with something more popular, here’s a video of the top boy and girl names.

So what names do you like or dislike? Should parents stay away from trendy or uniquely spelled names to save the kids from potential future grief?

And if you could alter your name, what would you change it to?

Don’t have a alternate name for myself. It’s fine just as it is…mom named me after a famous post wwII diplomat she claims…pretty old fashion. BTW, my name sounds bratty or a pain in the butt according to that one site that pokes fun at names…hmmm, may be true.

My grandkids have those trendy and uniquely spelled names but they kinda neutral sounding so I don’t think there will be a problem in the future. I would have preferred them to be a John or Jane but I’m old.

  2. Cindy:

My kids have neutral names. Granddaughter has a unique spelling of a regular name. Makes it really hard to shop for stuffs with a name printed on it. Youknow, like when you go to LV & want to buy key chains, sippy cups, and whatever else you can put a name on.
I think it’s hard on kids who have unique spellings. Try the 1st day of school when the teacher can’t pronounce their name. Or having your child get gifts/cards with the wrong spelling.
Sometimes I can’t remember how to spell the unique names out there (senior moment) and end up getting really generic with cards & gifts–no name, just the greeting.

hmmmm…that namenerds site has too many comments that seem to come from tweens or mouthbreathers. Some good ones, but mostly from the shallow end of the gene pool.

Hard to guess on the name trend thing too. You never know when a name will become infamous. Not too bad if you have a common name, but if it’s a little unususal, and someone who shares your name becomes famous for something bad, look out.

Not a big fan of the “trendy name” either, like forcing the “Y” in there where it really doesn’t work. Oh well, to each their own, I guess.

Can’t say that I dislike any names. It kind of tells something about a person and I’m sure there’s a story behind the interesting ones. But I get kind of irked when a name is a funny play on words.

For example, I knew a girl in college named ‘Heidi Ho’. And I’ve seen several guys named ‘Eric Chun’ or ‘Eric Shen’.

On a weird note, my wife knew someone named ‘ABCDE’ (pronounced ab-see-dee).

As for my name, its pretty common in the general populace, but my mom didn’t know anyone by that name (and she knew a lot of people) so that’s kind of how I got it.

Have you seen names like “Erwin” and the last name “Erwin” cant figure out why you would name your kid the same first name as their last name. Must be a reason for it. ..and I think Shauna is such a sexy sexy name=) Just saying it makes me smile=)

  6. guest:

Real names that I have seen in Hawaii:

    Betty Hooker

    Della Bimbo

  7. L8-10:

celebrities always use “different” names for the publicity i guess. or just to be trendy. that “abcde” name was just a weird trend.

it must get irritating after awhile for the people with unusual names when everyone out there asks them again and again what their name is and how they spell it. my name is not that different but it’s not that common either and i hate it when i have to repeat my self over and over and over again…
    “nathan?”
    “no, leighton”
    “clayton.”
    “no, leighton!”
    “oh, okay, we get it!”
and then i get the package in the mail that says “layton” on it. grrrrr!

bananafish, haha yeah, i get you, that “y” in there is pretty forced sometimes. should we call you “bananafysh?” hahahaha, sorry, i couldn’t resist. i’m surprised no one else did that! hahahaha.

I was always partial to ‘Mercedes’ and ‘Porsha’ … my daughter is glad that I didn’t win on her name choice.

There use to be two sisters in my high school with the names of Hope and Faith .

  9. tag:

I like the names I gave my children. It fits their personality and style.

On anklebiters comment … I too remember two girls with the names Hope and Faith.

  10. Stacy:

i feel sorry for the children in school that have really strange names…..kids are gonna definitely tease you…why would parents want to torment their child that way?
unique is good to a point!

  11. Shauna:

I like Mercedes… though I probably would rather have that as a car than a name. The Mercedes is my dream car. :)

  12. anklebiters:

    Shauna:
You should watch the movie ‘License to Drive’ if you haven’t….there is a girl named Mercedes, but she rides around in a Cadillac…

  13. Shauna:

No wonder that name sounded familiar! I used to love “License to Drive” when I was kid cause I thought Corey Haim was cute!!

  14. anklebiters:

    Shauna:
Have you noticed that all of the childhood celebrities & actors/actresses, as they grow older, most are no longer ‘cute’? Look at the Olsen twins..saw one of them on Showtime’s Weeds series…they were never particularly cute, even as toddlers….now, YIKES!!! But then, there are those that age gracefully.
